As someone involved in the food industry the markup from the basic bulk oats to compared to the industry putting in small amount of cinnamon and a couple of tablespoons of brown sugar and served to you in a little paper packet is very very profitable. Oooh that salmon and nori combo sounds so good, imma have to give that a try sometime 🤩
Could not recommend more. I made savory oats for the first time years ago, and have never gone back to sweet.
Savory oatmeal's delicious. For the vegetarians, cook the oats in 1/2 broth and 1/2 coconut milk. Add in some diced mushrooms, a handful of greens like spinach, season, squeeze some lemon and drizzle some olive oil. Tasty as hell.
chicken broth, miso paste, scallions, topped with a soft boiled ramen egg (or just a runny fried egg)
Sometimes I crave a bland oatmeal with just butter and salt, but I can’t wrap my mental tastebuds around savory for oatmeal. Maybe steel cut would be okay, but there’s something about the mushy, gluey texture of regular oatmeal that sounds revolting with savory ingredients. I’m usually a pretty adventurous eater, so I’m surprised this idea bothers me so much. I really want *to want* to try it, though.

I actually like instant oats provided they are just rolled oats that have been blended. I make my own instant oats because buying cheap rolled oats and throwing them in the blender is usually cheaper and more reliable than buying instant. You are correct about it not being able to ascend past gruel but I actually always liked gruel. I make gruel whenever I'm reducing my fat intake. The one I like least is the steel cut. Also for those who don't yet know... Always salt your porridge.

I've been really into the idea of savory oatmeal. Cook oatmeal with water or chicken broth, then add miso paste, soy sauce, sriracha, and dump an egg in there while cooking. You end up with a filling cheap af meal that is great for any time of the day.
At that point just make barley soup
i've also heard of people eating this for breakfast to "start their day savoury" which sets their tone for the day. this helps them not eat sweet snacks during the day and eat a bit healthier
Should the egg be emulsified or scrambled into this dish?
@@RalphInRalphWorld I think I create a pocket towards the end of cooking and just let the egg cook with surrounding heat. I try my best to stir around the egg without breaking it. I have never gone backpacking in the last 10 years without oatmeal packets.
takes less fuel to warm up rolled oats you let cold soak in your food bag overnight....
Traditional rolled oats only take 3-4 minutes more to cook lol
@@Kamikazeman1234 The instant stuff comes prepackaged with seasonings and sweeteners that you might not have at home all the time (such as dried fruits and maple flavoring)
And though you could prepare individual packages of rolled oats with your own stuff, the packing, preparation, and scouting process for a trip is super time consuming. It's totally worth it to buy pre packaged oatmeal. Instant Oatmeal, Summer Sausage (a luxury), Clif bars, these make the serious hiker's life much easier.
If you're truck camping by all means get "real" oatmeal but you might as well bring along the eggs and bacon.
Bro: thermos cooking. First, replace your bowl or plate with a medium sized soup thermos. Then, use it to cook everything that otherwise needs to simmer. For oats, just put the oats and boiling water in, put the lid on, and let it sit. It’s easier even than cooking instant because you can set it down and pack up or whatever while it cooks (also convenient if you are interrupted while eating), and uses less fuel because even instant requires a little simmering. The weight increase is not that much - I actually use it as my water bottle as well.
*Who else searched up Shaquille Oatmeal*
"It's impossible for them to ascend any higher than gruel."
It really says something that living in the UK gruel is the prevailing kind of 'oatmeal'. We don't even think of it as gruel, because we're taught the Dickensian kind of gruel that's as awful-sounding as it could possibly be, but gruel (albeit usually less thin and often milk-based) is still eaten and enjoyed here. Throw some honey in if you're feeling bougie.
I love having grown up with the UK's cooking, it gives you a tolerance and standard of acceptability so much lower than anywhere else. Beans on toast becomes top-tier, straight outta the can.
I’m Australian, but I come from Scottish stock. I was offended by the gruel comments. I inherited a taste for porridge from my dad’s side, and was taught to cook in only water with a pinch of salt, so even with quick oats, I’ve only gotten a thick paste that’s closer to tiling grout than gruel. Leave it long enough and it becomes a cake of oats underneath an ambrosia of milk, sugar and melted butter. It’s absolutely heavenly.
I only get thin gruel like texture when I cook it in milk. I’m being particular, but the idea of soaking oats in the fridge over night/meal prepping oats isn’t for me. I’d rather make “gruel” with quick oats in the microwave than have cold sludge.
Also love beans on toast.

Savory oatmeal is definitely something for people to try, also! Cook the oats as you wish with or without milk in addition to or instead of water. Then when it's cooked add savory ingredients such as: cheese (shredded or a bit of coat/cream cheese), cooked breakfast meats like sausage or bacon bits, herbs like parsley or cilantro leaf, and my fave: a raw egg, cracked in when it's still hot in the pan but off direct heat. Cover the egg with the oatmeal for a few minutes to get a poached egg, or stir the raw egg in to give the oatmeal a rich, fatty texture (it will cook either way). Omit sugar and add salt to taste at the end. You could even add a little soy sauce or fish sauce instead of salt if you're a fan of those flavors.
