If they gave him turf in NY someone else would have lost it. You can't "take care" of everyone. I love that the first scene really defines the difference between Dwight and the new bloods. The new guys are all young, dumb, and full of themselves; any obstacle to their ambitions must be removed, no matter how loyal the obstacle nor how petty the gains. Dwight is a classic, respectful man who understands that there are rules which _everybody_ needs to follow, and the new bloods don't appreciate him constantly showing how much worse they are without principles. He did his time, they didn't believe he could because they wouldn't. He showed up respectfully as an OG, they tried to treat him like a common street soldier. He throws one good hit to silence the constant disrespect, and they all draw on him like they wouldn't be able to defend themselves otherwise. Dwight is always the man in the room, and every little boy shown up by his integrity despises him for it. Pete should have known that his family was already dead without Dwight, especially under the "new management" constantly rocking the boat.
Terrence Winter (guy who wrote and directed some episodes of Sopranos) did some writing for season 1 of Tulsa King, so that’s probably why it seems taken from Sopranos.

The worst choice you can make is to make a hothead snake as the underboss. Sooner or later you will wind up floating in the river from the actions of him.

So mobsters start wars because of poor social skills? A man who can deal with interactions like a grown up instead of digging for insults self sabotagingly, could be highly dangerous in that world.
