Dad was born in HDH in 1939, grew up in Hohememmingen, 2 KM from Giengen where he went to school. I spend many easter vacations at my Grandma back then in 70 & 80s. Lots of good memories… 😊
Hi Lauren, that is a wonderful tour and brief history lesson of Ulm. As with all your videos, it is a top notch production! And, as with quite a number of your videos, I ended up getting hungry...🙂 Cheers, Peter
Oh hallo Peter! Thank you so much for the coffee! It’s a lovely thing to do! Yes, I was editing and wanted to eat one so much! It’s a lovely city with so much good food.
I grew up in the Neu-Ulm district, so Ulm was the city you went to as a teenager. In my opinion, Ulm is a completely underrated city. You get the old and the new and you get so much art from all sorts of areas.
Hello Lauren, needless to say, but yet another great and well-narrated video I love to see your doggies in your videos. The town of Ulm is so pretty and just like all of the cities/towns in Germany full of history. Thank You for sharing your Mother In Laws history as well. I love how you were eating your favorite street snack and the bell rang. That happened to me as well when I was eating spaghetti eis as I was filming lol :) Great job Lauren :)
Wasn´t it fun? Oh, I´m hungry now, but it´s nearly 5am... maybe I should go to bed so I can get up soon for breakfast! I was honoured to share the history in this video. Thank you for watching, Darion!
Grew up in Blaustein myself and boy, I didn't really appreciate it's beauty until I moved away. My brother got married in this lovely townhall of Ulm. Also, if you ever want to visit Ulm again, I'd recommend visiting it on Schwörmontag 2026. Schwörmontag is a local holiday and every 4 years there is a tournement called Fischerstechen, basically a kind of tjost in boats. Plus (and this is a yearly thing) there is the nabada, kind of like a carneval parade on the danube.
Oh wow- that’s quite the location to get married in! Yes, Blaustein is where I lived. So beautiful and with that castle up above on the hill..! And yet, in 15 minutes, you are at the Münster. I didn’t want to move on! Thanks for the tips, another good reason to go back!
Hi Lauren. I´m a Donauschwabe too and emigrated in 1985 from Romania, from a village on the Hungarian border to Franconia, Germany. Just a little supplement to your wonderfull vlog. The emigrants came from all over Western Germany and Eastern France, some even from Italy between 1750 end 1790. All had to be catholics. They were embarked in Ulm on the so called Ulmer Schachteln (rudimentary boats) and shipped on the Danube until Budapest. From here they were allotted to the settling areas, all over the Banat region, which since 1921 (Treaty of Trianon after WW I) is divided between Hungary, Serbia and Romania. The people preserved their respective original dialects, which is of course different from today´s standard German. My own family came frome Lorrain, France in 1765 and we still speak our dialect at home. Thank you for mentioning our history, because few people in Germany know about or are even interested in it. Kind regards.
Exactly - someone commented that they didn’t think Swabian is so difficult to understand, but it was Donauschwäbisch. I felt quite emotional about sharing this, so I am very glad that you liked it, thank you.
Another thing we have in common. My wife and I love to go camping, but we do not have a camper van. We have a roof-top-tent on top of our Toyota Land Cruiser. We love to camp with our two Boston Terriers (Hund and Segundo) in remote locations that are very prevalent in the west of the USA.
A Land Cruiser - a four-wheel drive, am I right? Isn´t it just the best, sleeping so close to the elements? Last night it was stormy and raining, but quite safe (we just had a hurricane here). It was soooo cosy! Except for the leaking window, of course lol! And how funny, your dog is called Hund! Love it!
Danke Dir, liebe Blond Katze. Ich mag Ulm so und obwohl ich denke, es ist kein Video das meinen Kanal in den Himmel schießt, wollte ich ein Ulm-Video für Euch machen!
@@Voronochka262 ah, thanks! I think the town’s wording on their website kind of claimed her, but that is understandable. She was wonderful and it’s heartbreaking that she was executed- murdered.
omg i was born and raised there. its the perfect "big little city" ("kleine Großstadt") in my opinion. you have everything you need like stores and stuff but not so much that you get overwhelmed like in the really big citys. also you have a vibrant nightlife and cultural things and the danube riverbanks are alwys full of people in the summer.
You are always so sweet and adorable and it is a lot of fun to watch your videos. The thing with the dialects is a very exciting thing if you want to explore the many regions of the German-speaking area, then you will definitely have fun with it and maybe experience one or the other surprise and overcome challenges, but I have heard as far as dialects are concerned Brits are pretty good at it, too, right? Thank you in any case and have a pleasant week.
Dear Lauren, you gave me a fright ! Anything positive about the city I grew up in ???? Thank goodness you did find something positive after all ! Liebe Grüße von einem Ulmer Spatz
Ah, I love Ulm! Honestly, it was one of the happiest places I lived ❤️ I forgot to put the Ulmer Spatz story in- I will have to make another Ulm Liebesbrief…!
Hello Lauren, thank you for this nice video about Ulm, a city I have been living since 1997. I am quite happy living here. Ulm is a great place to live! Thanks for the tip of having a wrap at Urgalim C. I have not known this restaurant yet...
Laureen, some funny facts about Ulm. It is not too long ago, when you drove west from Ulm to Tübingen or Reutlingen along the B28, the signs in Ulm showed direction "Reutlingen", but as soon as you left the territory of Ulm, the signs changed to "Tübingen". The cities Tübingen/Reutlingen are only 10 km apart, so it is the generally same direction, but why the change? Well my interpretation is as follows, both Ulm and Reutlingen were formerly free cities ("freie Reichsstädte") and both were not too friendly with Württemberg. As soon as you enter the territory of Württemberg in Blaubeuren, the direction changes to the main city of Württemberg in that direction, that is Tübingen. Sometimes history has funny consequences, even nowadays. But too bad, the direction signs were changed some years ago. Have you been to the "Blautopf" - the source of the river Blau? A watermaid is living there :-) sometimes she comes up to sing at the surface! There is an other tongue breaker (beside the one about Ulm) about Blaubeuren - but it is in Swabian - every Swabe knows it: "S'leit a Kletzle Blei glei bei Blaubeura - glei bei Blaubeura leit a Kletzle Blei" - "Es liegt ein Klötzchen Blei gleich bei Blaubeuren - gleich bei Blaubeuren liegt ein Klötzchen Blei" The ships which were used by the Donauschwaben were called "Ulmer Schachteln" - "Ulm boxes".
Jaaa... I wondered if anyone would know that about the Ulmer Schachteln. I can´t always pack everything into a video that I would like to, so I left it out. I hoped people were interested enough in the Donauschwaben to listen to as much as I said...! And the Blautopf is a dream ... but please, have a look at my video about Bad Urach! LOL there´s a funny story behind my visit.... Oh, the tribal nature of the Germanic people shows in the signposts, I think! LOL
There is or was a large jade colored stone inside the Münster chapel. It had several cuts into the stone. I saw it there for 3 years when I lived in the beautiful cities of Ulm & Neu Ulm. One day my friends and I were passing by & heard a xylophone type sound. We walked in & a children's group was taking a tour. The large jade stone was actually an instrument. The kids were slapping their hands on it, making music. 😳🎹🎶🧐 We couldn't believe it & found it hilarious. Do you or anyone else know about this? This was between 1986 and 1989. I hope it's still there. I'd love to hear more details. 🇩🇪🪖❤⚔🇺🇲
Of course I liked the video ! After all I am an " Ulmer Spatz", 😊👍 ! Thanks a lot. It is sooo nice to see one's home when abroad as you yourself surely knows. 🐉( Didn't find a red dragon, sorry.)
Lol! I´ll accept any dragon! I was going to tell the story of the Ulmer Spatz, and I found the footage two hours after uploading! I love Ulm so much, I´ll include it in another video. I´m so glad you liked it, thank you!
I actually live here since I was born and I really like the city! I am glad you liked it too! It makes me happy that people from other countries like it and you are doing a great job showing others that Germany isn’t actually as bad as it is often portrayed! Maybe we met without knowing ;)
This comment is not only for the RUclips algorithm but also a shoutout to Lauren for getting the Ulm-Zungenbrecher right and even the Donaudampf...-one ;-)
Omgoodness I impressed myself with these!!! I got the in Ulm in one take! But I stumbled on the „schaft“ and started swearing so needed three goes for the Donaudampfblahblahdeedeeblah one! Thanks, 77Chester77!
You're right about Hoch Deutsch - when in Ulm the locals & I stuck to english & written communications! Bier was a great starting point thankfully! I had thought my Bavarian friends were exaggerating again!
My mothers is already born in West-Germany but her parents, my grandparents, were „Ungarndeutsche“ from the area around Bácsalmás. As a kid I never heard them calling themselves Donauschwaben. As long as they lived I only knew that they had to leave Hungary after WW2. But now afaik it‘s probably possible, that they were descendants from the first „Donauschwaben“ that came to that area. 😊 And my grandparent‘s and also my mother‘s recipe collection were/are influenced by the Hungarian kitchen. My mother to this day makes a wonderful „Kartoffelgulasch“ without meat and just with potatoes and something called „Kartoffelsknödel“ that are made more like thick Spätzle. And of course no recipe is short of paprika. 🤤
Ahhh Onkel Karl who had moved back to Hungary brought regular supplies of Paprika. Can you even eat potatoes without it lol?! It’s really worth looking into your family’s history. Apparently, people emigrated as early as the 11th century, but mainly in the 17th century. Upstream, along the Donau. Tough people.
@@LaureninGermany I did a little bit of research into my family’s ancestry and still have the Family Tree Mobile App to save all the information I have. I also have photos of the birth certificates of my grandmother and grandfather in Hungarian and oddly in Latin, too. But I didn‘t get further than to the birth of my grand grandparents in 1884. My grandmother had her own little green house in my grandparents backyard where she grew Hungarian paprika. So there was (almost) never a shortage on paprika. 🙂 If you are interested, I can ask my mother for the recipe of „Kartoffelgulasch“. As I said it‘s without meat and afaik vegetarian or even vegan. 😊
@@Al69BfR Oh, I really would love that recipe! I´m vegan, and if there is butter in it, I can easily replace that with vegan butter. The Hungarians actually brought the Latin word to Bavaria that they all use for greeting: "servus". Apparently, they used it to say, I am your servant, Ihr Diener, quasi. So, I can imagine that Latin was an Amtssprache...?
@@LaureninGermany My mother informed me that the recipe originally contains eggs within the Knödel dough, but you can replace that part with vegan Spätzle when you use a little bit more flour so the Knödle get a little bit stiffer so you can form little Gnocchi sized Knödel with a spoon and put them with the spoon in the boiling sauce until they fall off the spoon. For the rest you need „mehlig kochende Kartoffeln“ and the same amount of onions. Cut the onions and cook them until they are glassy. Then add water to make the sauce depending on how thick you like it, add salt and „Paprika Edelsüß“ and cook the potatoes you cut into slices within that sauce. For the „Kartoffelsknödel“ use 250g flour, half a spoon of salt and 3 eggs/egg replacement or use a recipe for vegan Spätzle with a little bit more flour. When the potatoes are almost done, finally add the „Kartoffelsknödel“ (Spätzle). When the Knödel appear on the surface of the water everything is right to be served. And as always you can add other spices or vegetables to your liking, but perhaps you then have to reduce the amount of water you use. I hope you‘ll like it as my family does. 😊🤤
Danube river and Ulm, yeah! Ulm has been a proud free city in former times. Surrounded by catholic communities, Ulm joined the protestant movement very early. Today a very good place to study, work and live.
To promote the German city of Ulm, also the site of one of Napoleon's famous victories. Gwen Stefani's 2004 hit What You Waiting For could be used, via a simple reworking of the chorus, removing the oh's and turning them into Ulm. Wunderbar.
What a lovely video about Ulm! So much Beauty and interesting facts in your videos! In Ulm and around Ulm! But don’t you Film inside buildings? A short quick in the Ulmer Münster would have been great too. By the way, do you know, the Schnitzereien on Fachwerkhäusern have mostly a certain individual meaning. Have you been to Bacharach or Bernkastel-Kues or Braunfels or cities and towns at the Lahnriver?
I have been to those towns, but before I had my channel. I don´t often film inside because it´s not always allowed. Have a look at my video about Friedberg in Hessen, aka99. I was able to film inside some wonderful places there!
@@LaureninGermany understandable. I wonder anyhow how you have any time to make the videos and transport your feelings and enjoy in the videos. Glad you like it here in Germany. I moved to Stuttgart from Ulm 2 months ago and I want to go back already. :( I lived my whole live in Ulm or the surrounding area and I didn't think it would be a big deal to move to Stuttgart, since it's not THAT far away, but I was so wrong.
@@LaureninGermany yip, and its easy to find a parking spot with a motorbike....just a few meters away from it... but i took a lot of pics, doing a 7 countries tour that summer!

I imagine you have less luggage with you on a motorbike than I have, with two dogs and being a singer/actress! I hate dragging it all in and out of hotels. I used to travel just with a backpack, but as a student, not when performing...but the light travelling was great. And I am sure even my van offers a lot more comfort than what you had to endure in the military...

Hello Lauren, could You please tell me about the streetfood you ate at the end of the Video? I am German but havent seen this meal before. ( I first thought You had some kind of Turkish Lamacun :D )
Yes, it is Turkish - it is called Cigköfte, tasty balls made from bulgar wheat. Originally they were made from raw meat, but that´s no longer allowed, luckily for me, as a non-meat eater! They are tasty and healthy!
@@LaureninGermany Thanks Lauren. I thought it doesnt look too familiar to the German kitchen as we usually dont have any wrap styled dishes here originally.
@@sayonarababy335 I think I also said my favourite street food in Germany, but if I misled you, I am sorry. In that case, I should never mention Kaffee und Kuchen as being German. As coffee is originally Turkish?
@@LaureninGermany No no i think the missunderstanding was on my side. I have a hard oppinion on the German kitchen and to be straight with You I dont like our kitchen very much. I prefer dishes from Southern Europe, Latin America and China. Those countries have a lot of wrapped meals.
Ulm has a very beautiful old town but many of us who enjoyed its lively Cafés, Jazz Bars or great street restaurants and pubs are wondering what happened to the city the last say 10 years. In comparison to Austrian, French or Netherland cities we feel Ulm is going down the drain and only a sad shadow of a great past.... but...if you don't have that reference you sure can still enjoy the city's architectural beauty
Tbh I think it’s got that way everywhere. My husband is a jazz musician and it was different earlier. I still think Ulm has a special flair, but I am definitely biased!
@@LaureninGermany as said: Ulm certainly has its flair but what happened to its life? Its certainly not like that everywhere, just check on Polish cities like krakow, Gdansk etc. Check on Netherland cities like maastricht etc. French cities, Austrian cities. There are still cool jazz bars in these places, great cafe and restaurant scene, great pubs and nightlife. In Germany all that is certainly going down the drain and I wonder why.... but the cities are still beautiful
The Münster even took a direct hit in World War II as an explosive bomb smashed trough the roof directly into the choir room. Miraculously, the bomb was a dud and didnt explode, leaving the Münster nearly undamaged.
Just try this: S leid a Klötzle Blei glei bei Blaubeura, glei bei Blaubeura leit a Klötze Blei. (Blaubeuren, not far off Ulm) Besides do you know: Ulmer Spatz, Schneider von Ulm, greatest fort in the world, most high church tower... And to go on: Wilhelm Bauer (submarine) from Dillingen (i think), Albertus Magnus (Lauingen), (maybe) the last witch burndt in germany: Lauingen (yearly rememberd by Hexenverbrennung)... And the people of Giengen/Brenz are Panscher (a few centuries ago some (Imperator) got problems with to much water in his whine..) Well there is a fountain about this, just in the middle of Gienegen/Brenz. (A little addon: It takes me about 1/2 to go to Giengen/Brenz by feet (dont ?verwechsel? with Giengen/Fils). Brenz is a river (not really, just look at danube (Lauingen)), Fils is a bit smaller, than Brenz... Mea aculpa...
Hello BRacing Green (one of my favourite colours, btw). Your last comment got filtered out, unfortunately, because there were links on it - but thank you so much, I really appreciate your compliments! Now, I know lots about Giengen...
What is absolutely unbelievable is that I did it in one take!!! I can’t believe it. It’s the only time I have said it right in one go! 😂 I almost got Donaudampf…blahblah in one, but I slithered on schaft and started swearing!
@@LaureninGermany Wow, I am honestly impressed. I am sure that if I should try it in one take, I will fail miserably... although I am German! 😂 Well the compound words are a different story I guess... a weird symptom of the German language... but I think that's what we are, a bit weird sometimes 😂
I can really understand that. But over the last years, the alternatives have become fantastic, and the ease and choice is getting so much better, too. If you don‘t want animals to suffer, it‘s never been easier. I was in Lidl on Föhr, and there were alternatives right next to the animal products, not in a separate section. I‘m not trying to push it here on the channel, but I don‘t want to pretend I‘m something I‘m not (a meat-eater). I‘m open for questions if you want!

I grew up in the Neu-Ulm district, so Ulm was the city you went to as a teenager. In my opinion, Ulm is a completely underrated city. You get the old and the new and you get so much art from all sorts of areas.
I completely agree. Ulm is really great, such a nice atmosphere, I take every chance to go there.
Thank you, Lauren, for another beautiful video.
Thank you so much, Peter!
Beautiful video! Thank you!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Love it!

Hello Lauren, thank you for this nice video about Ulm, a city I have been living since 1997. I am quite happy living here. Ulm is a great place to live! Thanks for the tip of having a wrap at Urgalim C. I have not known this restaurant yet...
Oh, enjoy! Both the cigköfte and the chickpea version are delicious! Grüße nach Ulm! I miss your city!
There is an other tongue breaker (beside the one about Ulm) about Blaubeuren - but it is in Swabian - every Swabe knows it: "S'leit a Kletzle Blei glei bei Blaubeura - glei bei Blaubeura leit a Kletzle Blei" - "Es liegt ein Klötzchen Blei gleich bei Blaubeuren - gleich bei Blaubeuren liegt ein Klötzchen Blei"
The ships which were used by the Donauschwaben were called "Ulmer Schachteln" - "Ulm boxes".
LOL
Hello Lauren! A couple of weeks ago I was in Ulm and there was no scaffolding at the Münster any more (at least not at the front).
@@MichaelBurggraf-gm8vl excellent! Another Ulm visit is long overdue. I love Ulm.

You're right about Hoch Deutsch - when in Ulm the locals & I stuck to english & written communications! Bier was a great starting point thankfully! I had thought my Bavarian friends were exaggerating again!
Lol! It’s a shock at first, isn’t it? And then, just when you‘ve got it- you go to another region and have to start all over again!
Such stunning scenery and architecture
And I found more beautiful footage that I had forgotten about! I must include it in another video. An amazing town.
And my grandparent‘s and also my mother‘s recipe collection were/are influenced by the Hungarian kitchen.
@@Al69BfR OMG! I have copied this into a document- sounds perfect for a cold day after a long walk!!! Thank you! And Vielen lieben Dank an die Mama!
