    27:05 It's kinda hilarious how Mariko's translations become like bootleg Chinese subtitles when she doesn't like what's being said. 🤣

    The ultra-perceptive Kiku who made Mariko insecure with her beauty and grace indicated that she (Kiku) would aid her (Mariko) with her feelings for John. Kiku: "A woman cannot look away when another suffers." She (Kiku) then proceeds to demonstrate the power of the "empty space" as she positions herself opposite of John with Mariko in between them knowing that Mariko would translate everything she said. Unfortunately Mariko's 8-fold fence got in the way of her saying "be here with me now". Just another powerful, award-worthy scene from this series!

    The Monk haircut (Tonsure) isn't about humiliating yourself (I may have left the comment which led you think so. Apologies if the case), it's about removing the possibility of vanity and pride, both of which are sins in that worldview. It's the same reason (or one of them) some Hindu and Buddist ascetics have what you'd call dreadlocks. Same goal, different road.

    In this episode, you can understand why Buntaro is the way he is with Mariko. Mariko’s father(Jensai), Toronaga and Taiko were equal ranked Lords, serving Lady Ochiba’s Father, who ended wars, but was brutal ruler. Buntaro’s family is lower ranked family and Mariko felt humiliated by her engagement. At the beginning Buntaro fell in love with her and was blandly ignoring her arrogance to his family(Toda), being cold to him, being disappointed in mismatch, but finally he understood it and got angry at her. And when her father did what did, by throwing country again into war between Toronoga, Jensai, Taiko, where Buntaro fought. Akechi House fell and was convicted as filthy traitors and Mariko became the last member of her house. Now, when she was equal to Buntaro or even lower, she asked permission to commit seppuku, but Buntaro didn’t gave it, because of anger and (it might sound strange ) because of he loves her. And after so many years getting nothing from her but coldness, his love became obsession. And when he sow her relationship with John he became mad.

    • @jimmygreer2140
      @jimmygreer2140 3 месяца назад +4

      Obsession? I wouldn't call it that. It's certainly not healthy. But I feel like the way he treats her is a mixture of a lot of things. Mostly that to Buntaro she's more of a possession. A trophy for his family and for himself. And if he could, he would have her locked away in a trophy cabinet.
      I don't think he really ever tried too hard to make a connection with her. And that's because of how he would've been raised. Hiromatsu was too straight forward for all the nuance, tact, care, patience, etc it takes to build relationships. So Buntaro would've had these same short-comings. Not a very charasmatic house are the Todo's. Great warriors, incredibly loyal, trust worthy...but not the most personable of folk.
      And of course part of that issue is also in the times we're dealing with. It would've been rare for a man to be truly interested in what a woman's dreams are, her goals, desires, fears, pet peeves, bad habits, good habits. Nah, back then it was "you're my wife, make me happy".
      It's why John was able to win Mariko's affection while Buntaro failed. Mariko certainly looked down upon John at first as well. But he showed an interest in her as a person and not just some property. And that was the difference.

      @@jimmygreer2140 good points, and I’m not trying to make him a Good Samaritan, but I think people missing the fact that Mariko also were arrogant and cold to him, I mean they both were put into this marriage, like every other nobels. After fall of her house of course she became close to members of House Toda(Hiromatsu and Fuji), but not Buntaro, because I believe he some words and actions happened between them, when Jensai started the war. And I believe the main reason he punishing her because her arrogance before, he’s like ”look at you now, how you are better than me, member of Fallen Filthy line”, but the same time he can’t let her go because he loves her, and hoped she will change, he doesn’t seem to have other wives, or concubines, or women. And you can see it in coming episode’s “tea scene”, where he says that in the beginning they were happy, referencing to the time when he was blind and ignoring, but when Mariko answered basically saying that she never felt anything to him, he cries out of pain rejection.

    • @jimmygreer2140
      @jimmygreer2140 3 месяца назад +3

      @@magomedvisaitov7972 Yeah, well Buntaro has no one to blame but himself. He really didn't give Mariko anything to respect/love.
      Like if he had allowed her to enjoy being a mother & he was a good father maybe she could've developed feelings for him. But she couldn't even find happiness & joy in being a mother cause he was always being toxic to their son.
      But that's what makes Mariko such a wonderfully tragic character. She has lived a life with almost no joy. So of course her outlook is "life sucks, then you die". But before the end she does seem to learn that while life does suck, it can be beautiful and wonderful and it's those moments that make it worth fighting through the BS life throws at us.
      And that's all I wanted from the series. I wanted Mariko's view on life to change. I wanted her to take some control over her life and do what makes her happy. To see that life has a lot of amazing things to offer...falling in love, seeing the natural wonders this world has to offer, learning new things, trying new foods, etc etc.

    Hot damn this show is so dope, glad that y’all are following along so well. The intrigue is especially dense through a historical lens and the subtitles, but the showrunners did a great job of giving enough info each episode to untangle the knot. Trust me the conclusion is very satisfying.

    31:00 [NO SPOILERS] It's been a few years since I read the novel, but I don't recall anything about Toranaga plotting against Ochiba's father.
    However, the novel does give us Ochiba's internal dialogue as she is thinking about why she hates Toranaga. She definitely has some conflicting emotions, and one doozy of a secret.

    The Council is now invalid. The four had to agree for Ito to become the fifth. Sugiyama said no. So Ito is not a regent. Then Ishido killed Sugiyama when he tried to leave. So now there is only three valid regents and four is needed for the vote. Nothing the Council does from here on out is legal.

    what i don't many caught:
    in the last scene of the episode, when the camera focuses tight onto buntaro, he's not looking at toronaga [while everyone's cheering]. buntaro's actually looking to the side and staring a hole through blackthorn. he's ignoring everything around him- including the very fact that his lord pretty much just declared war on the regents and only seeing blackthorn. he [buntaro] has been fully been consumed by his hatred.
