Those girls early on were so friendly and polite. Genuinely seemed kind mate. Really enjoyed this one. Thank you. (And the blokes outside the pizza joint were bloody excellent).
those guys and other people like that are one of the reasons I love go back every year they are the salt of the earth. they also have profound insight and wisdom.
Mad respect for you guys man. I can tell by the way the camera cuts before you speak to certain people that you’re always respectful and go up to them and ask if they’re okay to be filmed etc. I was in NYC recently for work (I’m a mid 20s white English guy) the areas I grew up in were pretty rough and I’m very used to being in what you’d call the “bad” areas of London (Tottenham, Brixton, Peckham) but first time I found myself in the “bad” areas of New York (crown heights, Brownsville) it felt DIFFERENT. It’s hard to know how to act. Do you try to blend in and keep your head down ? Or just own that you’re a foreigner and let everyone hear your accent ? The answer is nearly always be yourself no matter where you are. ALWAYS be respectful to the locals but most importantly DO NOT be afraid of telling people that you are not from there and that you don’t know how things work. Ask for help if you need to. You are a guest in their space and you need to respect it. I met some of the most interesting and kind people I’ve ever met in the “worst” parts of New York and LA
Brownsville’s reputation often reflects its past more than its present. While crime is still a concern, it does not define the entire neighborhood. Many areas are safe during the day, and the community is working hard to foster positive change.
@Ira88881 In the 1930s it was mainly a white slum and the population was tiny compared to now. Brownsville went downhill after slavery ended, and the cotton industry slowed down.
What an inspiring video. Makes me realise what I am missing out not travelling. Maybe you had a lucky day meeting such lovely people, but just goes to show " Don't judge a book by its cover" Many thanks Wendall, funny the Lancastrian mate chickening out. Brilliant.
Coney Island, home of the warriors from the 1979 classic film of the same name. The concreted over area with the small circle of grass is at 1:47 is where the entrance under the broadwalk at the end of the film used to be, it's been blocked off now. I visited and stood underneath it back in 1984.
Fantastic initial collaboration! Been following you both during the past few years, but this is next level! The interaction you had with the guys around Tony's Pizza was so heartwarming. Your approach is testament to that, open, honest, and downright friendly. Sterling work
You were in a populated area in daytime. I think you were pretty safe with all the shops nearby open... However if you did this at night, the whole situation would be changed for the worse is my guess.
As a Brit that's lived in Brooklyn for 7 years...I can say these boys would get eaten at night. Good folk in all neighbourhoods, but at night, you'd be silly to walk around sticking a camera in peoples faces.
I reckon it's your warm, friendly and understandable Birmngham accent that got you through to these New York people who accepted you very well. The take away man was very kind to you, and the food looked delicious. An exceptionally great video to watch, without a doubt. You may have some followers on this channel now, from that district?!
Coney Island can be dangerous in certain parts also. They're talking about the projects on 33d and Mermaid. Thats a notorious hood in Coney Island. I got a lot of crazy stories from hanging in Coney Island. I used to party in Van Dyke projects in Brownsville too. But i would never go there without people from there with me.
