Machinists use the left arm sleeve against the thimble method to open and close the mic fast. Quantum mic’s are great, just a bit bulky for use by a machine. Inspection would be ideal if it has SPC output.
    Thanks for posting DT.

You make another really good point, beyond what others have said: It is bulky. I just learned about the arm trick today, so that makes your point all the more valuable. It's all about the tricks. Cheers.

I have a 0-1 and 1-2 Mitutoyo and love them. i couldn't afford new so i sought out good second hand. thanks for the video

I looked for second hand first, but was unable to find any. Excellent luck. They are much more convenient than a standard mic.

To open or close a micrometer quickly, I just roll the spindle against my body. It keeps it nice and clean, too!

I have heard, just today, about people rolling them mics down their arm for rapid changes. I was not aware of this trick. Very cool. Thanks for sharing.

    Hey Dudley.
Measuring equipment always Best to buy the Best.
But when your hand goes into your wallet your thinking start,s to change, LOL.
    Love Mitutoyo.
But when you can buy a set of good quality Micrometers, for the same price as one
    Mitutoyo Micrometer.
    It is a difficult choice.
    Thanks for the video.
    Regards Peter.

We are on the same page. As I have commented on other posts. This was a rare new tool purchase. 90+ percent of my tools and tooling come from estate sales and Ebay. I am always on the fence about getting one outstanding tool or several adequate ones. If I made a profit from my hobby, perhaps the calculus would be different. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

40 TPI is a legacy of analogy technology which, as you've shown, is ridiculous with digital mics. Thanks for the demo. Your new mic looks great.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I love to hear peoples take on my videos and the ideas I present. One negative is that if the battery dies, I am dead in the water. Small price to pay, but a price none the less.

You wife know her man. Great gift.

She's a peach. We both have rather specific interests and let each other pick out what we like. A whole lot fewer returns than earlier in our relationship. She still is very understanding of an expensive hobby. I am indeed lucky.

Glad you like it. It doesn't appeal to me. After years and years of 0.025" per revolution, I'll continue. I don't have a reason to move faster.

That is a great rebuttal. Besides, if the battery dies on this guy, I'm dead in the water. I also discovered today the rolling the caliper up the arm trick to speed up large changes. This perhaps changes the value of the faster traverse spindle. Thanks for sharing you thoughts.

    I’d like that feature myself

I like this mic quite a bit, but read through some of the other comments, if you like, and others make some good arguments for staying with the less bulky, battery free mics of old.

Dudley Toolwright the truth is I’m also a bit old school, not only with micrometers but I prefer a quality dial caliper also

I fully respect that. I actually enjoy reading the vernier mics as well, but my poor eyesight makes it difficult. I still can do it, but it is a struggle. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Great tool, but I have a funny story for you. My wife called me for supper and I said wait I will be there in about 5 minutes I am watching a tool review by Dudley Toolwright.
She says aren't you a little bit to old to be watching cartoons... I had to tell her that it was Dudley Toolwright not Dudley Doright. Just thought I would share that with you... lol

That's a great story! Thanks for sharing it. I cost the name to be a play on words. I'm glad it worked.
