First Time Hearing Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath with Ozzy Osbourne on vocals...Steph n Jay react to a classic metal track that sparked that metal revolution
Black Sabbath is the debut studio album by the English rock band Black Sabbath. Released on 13 February 1970 in the United Kingdom and on 1 June 1970 in the United States, the album reached number eight on the UK Albums Charts and number 23 on the Billboard charts. Black Sabbath is widely considered the first heavy metal album.[2] Additionally, the opening track of the album, "Black Sabbath", is widely considered to be the first doom metal song

You've just witnessed the birth of Metal. Welcome.
@Coach Craig Hmm.
@Coach Craig They should do The Wizard too.
@Coach Craig The first song Black Sabbath recorded was Wicked World and the second song was Black Sabbath.
Lepotadneva yup
@@Lepotadneva Actually the Wicked World was the first Original song they ever recorded. The first song they recorded was Evil Woman (a cover from the band Crow) which was their first single. Wicked World was on the B side of the single. But that doesn't include the Earth demo's
Arguably still the heaviest riff ever written. The gloriously demonic 'tritone'.
Before they wrote this song they just another bog-standard blues/jazz fusion band called Earth. But one day, across the road from where they were rehearsing, they saw a cinema advertising Mario Bava's classic horror anthology BLACK SABBATH. They noticed how many people were going to see it and someone said "Isn't it interesting that people will pay money to see a scary movie. What about if we started writing scary music?" And that set a whole direction for the band.
'Black Sabbath' was the second song they wrote, and an entire genre was born.
The movie Black Sabbath was one of the scariest movies I ever saw as a child. I don't ever hear or see it ever discussed in scary movie circles. It was such a surprise to hear that this was what they were named after!
Don't forget the fact that Iommi's accidental loss of fingers made him to drop the tune of the guitar and change his approach to playing, which created the iconic sound.
Toni Iommi sound is one of the best tones out very dark.
Camrahnbay Camrahnbay Yeah man, because of his finger injury, he had to drop an entire octave. That sound was completely original.
@craig 22I'm 19 currently. And 4 years ago, I first heard this song. That time I was already into Pantera, Megadeth, Metallica etc. But when I heard this song I couldn't finish it. I was scared as fuck. And BTW, metal might have died only in the US. In Asia, it's growing bigger everyday.
What you guys just watched was the birth of HEAVY METAL and this album was released on Friday the 13th 1970 BTW. I'm a HUGE Black Sabbath fan🤘🖤
Me too I just got introduced to sabbath and geezer got me to play bass an I’m only 12
@@TKMMA_ good to hear! Check out "Slipping Away" from Sabbath off of Mob Rules
@@klasseact6663 , that release date you mention was in England because in the USA it was released June 1, 1970.
I was 9 years old that year and Sabbath became my favorite band since knocking The Beatles from my favorite band 😁
@@fierrote Sabbath blows away the Beatles, not even close across the board! The release date IS the release date though 😎
@@klasseact6663 , I never said that The Beatles were better or not all I said was that back in 1970 I was 9 years old and the Fab Four were my favorite band until the day I came accross and listened to Sabbath music for the first time. That was in the Summer of 1970. Now, you can't say that Sabbath is better than The Beatles because both bands have different music styles, but you cannot deny that both bands have definitely influenced hundreds of bands because both Sabbath and The Beatles were creators of a different kind and style of music. Back in 1960 (The Beatles) and in 1970 (Black Sabbath).
Ozzy- Vocals, Tony Iomi-Guitar, Geezer Butler-Bass, Bill Ward-Drums
The album was recorded in 1969, released on February 13, 1970.
This song is a prophetic warning to all, your choices of pleasures of the flesh have a price whatever they may be.
No effects... just 4 men, 3 instruments and 1 voice... this is impossible to replicate by any band in any point in history besides these 4 pioneers.🤘🏽🙇🏽♂️
I love how Ozzy is trying to pull the rhythm up in the first 2 verses but Bill and Geezer have it anchored to granite. It adds to the tension.
This song scared the hell out of me the first time I heard it. This song scared the hell out of me the last time I heard it.
Jason Finger 😂😂me too
Electric Funeral scared the daylights out if me the first time I heard it.
My ex wife did not like me playing Sabbath around the kids. Saying it was the devil music.
I said you have it all wrong, they used Satan as a reference. They did not worship the devil.
Listen to the song After Forever.
The Demonic sound that Tony Iomi was playing was banned in the middle ages, for sounding like the devils music.
In musical terms it is a Triton, or the devils interval.
i'm going to have to argue with you for a second and agree that you are right..lol

There are just some people, that will never understand. Brain dead and love commercial bullshit music.
The most sinister riff of all. The birth of metal
Rob Halford ( the vocalist of Judas Priest) once called this song “the most evil track ever that’s been written.”
I don't have a point, just thought you would appreciate that little fact.
this is like a medieval morality play, warning people not to mess around with the devil.
the message is "you'd better get yourself into church and repent while you can! have a little talk with Jesus so you don't wind up like the character in this song!"
You gotta do "Sweet Leaf" from Black Sabbath!!
🤘😎🤣
Sweet Leaf is a gate way to Snowblind. Your next song should be Snowblind by Black Sabbath
You got to do sweetleaf at the same time you do sweetleaf
Originally released on Warner Bros Records, 1970.

U.K.
there was a bass player too. geezer butler. in fact, he wrote the song.
pyscho man interesting, in Speak of The Devil, Ozzy claimed that was his first creation.
Actually this one's lyrics were penned by Ozzy.
During a July 2001 interview with Geezer Butler, Guitar World magazine explained that "having borrowed a 16th century tome of black magic from Osbourne one afternoon, Butler awoke that night to find a black shape staring balefully at him from the foot of his bed. After a few frightening moments, the figure slowly vanished into thin air." Geezer continued to describe how he "told Ozzy about it. It stuck in his mind, and when we started playing 'Black Sabbath', he just came out with those lyrics. It had to come out, and it eventually did in that song - and then there was only one possible name for the band, really!"
But the actual riff behind it was complete Tony Iommi. The lyrics came later
Geezer wrote almost all the lyrics, but Ozzy would create the vocal melody.
You can also clearly hear bass on this, the guitar's heavy and tuned down, but a lot of the rumble is bass and it's shown too
@@zubrycky there had been a film out called "Black Sabbath" and horror was a popular film genre in the 60's.
The version I have seen them describing, was that the intro words came out of jamming. Ozzy wasn't exactly a writer, so probably Geezer added to it, as he became the main lyricist
Along with Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony and parts of Mahler's 6th and 9th, one of the most terrifying pieces of music ever written. It shocks first time listeners as much now as it did 50 years ago.
I automatically clicked like when you stopped at the beginning and said ‘that’s one of the sickest intros’. I absolutely agree. It’s my favorite Sabbath song and it’s mainly because of that badass riff. This song is arguably THE song that defined the heavy metal sound.
Btw, a fellow June 1 baby right here...1974 👍🏼
The Wizard off of Sabbath's 1st album is a great one. Ozzy plays the harmonica. To clarify in the UK it was released 2/13/70, but in the US it was released 6/1/70.
I saw this, and do not regret it! Thank you!
I’m hooked! Subscribed ✔️

We need more Classic Black Sabbath on this Channel.
Paul Gureghian please don’t ever call Black Sabbath Classic Rock. They is not even a Genre in music called Classic Rock.
Ozzy is going to be a really hard one to lose...
Great reaction. My first metal band. Still a big musical influence. Although a lot of the beats sound sinister, if you pay attention to their lyrics, you’ll find a lot of positive messages. Next song - wow, tough one as they have so many influential and excellent songs. Love “Into the Void”, “Symptom of the Universe”, “Hole in the Sky”, “Sweet Leaf” but I’m honestly missing many, many more. Next band to check out - Judas Priest.
Still after 50 years sends shivers down my back.
Enough to shake up the mind.
The Satan aspect was likely tied to the title of the song... "Black Sabbath" and the guy he was portraying as a vocalist is the victim they chose to sacrifice in that rite... That at least is how I always read it. It is basically a horror movie/story in music form. There was a guitarist, and a bassist, drummer, and Ozzy (Known as Jonathan Osbourne at the time). Toni Iommi the guitarist has a prosthetic on his fretting hand ring finger. You can see the bass player slapping the bass quite a few times... he was playing the picking hand with his fingers, and the guitarist was using a pick. This is actually the first song they wrote with this sound. That one riff kind of started what I consider Metal.
Iommi's boss at the time Iommi had his accident had no idea back then but when Iommi felt he was done for as a guitarist, his boss told him about Django Reinhardt and how his accident did not stop him. We owe Iommi's boss and Django Reinhardt a huge thank you for getting Iommi back on track to become the riff master.
The Bass player is Geezer Butler and the drummer is Bill Ward
Prosthetic? Lololol he lost his finger tips and made his own replacement tips by melting washing up liquid bottle plastic, so he could play again.
@@RobBCactive - Heh that would still qualify as a prosthetic. It doesn't need to be purchased from a factory or lab to be qualified as such. It is amusing how he made them though. Pretty amazing actually.
This is an Anti-Satanic song. Warning Satan will fill all your worldly greed, desire and pride and when he comes to collect you will be screaming for God to save your ass. So maybe just don't sell your soul.

3. Trio. You know the Third. My favorite also. And 3 is my favorite number. My Moms initials are N.I.B. Also a favorite. But I never really grasped it til after she passed and I was thinking about her and I was playing the CD in my car 3 years ago. Funny how things relate. Something also strange my birthday is 12-3. So is Ozzy's.
I just watched this with my wife and we loved this! This album is my favorite of all time! And Black Sabbath is my favorite band of all time. I'm 45 and I discovered this old album when I was 13 in my mother's record collection. I saw the album artwork and took it to my room to play it. I've been in love with this song/album/band ever since. I'm really happy that you guys interpreted the song lyrics in the exact way they were intended. The song is mean to be a warning against evil. It's not promoting "being evil" They intend to write a song that would/might scare people like a movie scares people...well, they NAILED it and your reaction was awesome! Cheers! Sippingtons!
Black Sabbath got their eery scary sound from a movie theater across the street from the recording studio. The theater would play old scary movies. Ozzy and the band would take breaks and go watch a movie across the street. They themselves claim that's where the scary music was born
I saw Black Sabbath in 1978 in Springfield, Illinois. Van Halen were the opening act on their first U.S. tour. I was 14 and my 16 year old friend drove there. The guitar notes you hear are a tri- tone that was associated with the devil. If you freeze the video you will see a left handed red guitar with 6 strings. Tony Iommi with a Gibson SG that had the electronics modified. The other guitar is a Fender bass played by Terrance "Geezer" Butler. It has 4strings and a natural finish. You can see him plucking it with his fingers. His hair is also lighter in color than Tony's. You guys are a sweet couple and if the song scares you, you have each other to hold. I play electric guitar, bass and drums, and Black Sabbath are a big inspiration. I started playing in 1970. I'm sure my answers were already addressed in the comments but I did not read them yet. Try to listen to " Lady Evil" also by Black Sabbath, but with the second vocalist Ronnie James Dio. He was a better singer than Ozzy. Ozzy is great also. RIP Ronnie. Going to subscribe now.
I've listened this song like ten years ago and it's still giving me goosebumps, Black sabbath forever, the father of the beast, the genesis of metal.
In case,
You are wondering. Band got its name from a (I believe in 1966) movie called Black Sabbath. Did you notice on Tony Iommi's hand that one of his fingers is shorter? I think it's his pinky finger. Tony had an accident in a manufacturing facility in England before Black Sabbath started. He thought that accident would hinder his playing his guitar, but we all know that he can......
And Heavy Metal was born.....thank you Black Sabbath
When I was young, we called this Devil Death Music. I wasn't into them back then, but now I appreciate it. That is one amazing intro.
First time seeing the video for "Black Sabbath". It looks like Spencer's Gifts used to smell when I was a kid. Was always worried I was going to be sacrificed if I wandered too far in... ;-)
Folks...how could you miss Geezer Butler (bassist who penned the song on his own experience)? There was quite clearly someome playing bass and guitar in the vid... the album was released on February Friday 13th 1970 by the way. Also, everybody in that band was Catholic.
The most important song off the most important album in rock history.
This record was recorded just weeks after Woodstock. No flower power here. The birth of a whole new form of rock music.
Christopher Sims correct. The sooun they were trying to create. Was a much darker version of the Psychedelic genre. That was very popular when they first started out in 1968.
It's more along the lines that he's coming to get Geezer Butler (bassist), who wrote the lyrics from an actual experience.
The guitarist's name is Tony Iommi. He lost his fingers in a factory accident, and they were replaced with metal tips. As a result he turned the guitar strings to Drop D Tuning, and Heavy Metal was born.

This song is so heavy and dark and scary and awsome. Nobody did it better, or ever will do it better than Sabbath. I love this album cover, its got that creepy, scary, gothic, Blair Witch type of feel to it, which is perfect for this song and album.
Guitarist's (Tony Iommi) Ring finger the tip is a prosthetic he made himself. Still plays guitar as bad ass as he did. He cut the tip of that finger off before they made any of their music. Great guitarist and it is interesting he is wearing a prosthetic he made himself.

Guitarist - Tony Iommi. His bio includes a hand injury, fingers detipped on his left hand. Wounded guitarists are really good. Django Reinhardt, Les Paul, also injured in major ways.
What's interesting is that the last song Black Sabbath ever made was called Dear Father. This is about a priest who gets murdered by someone he molested. The song ends with the same rain and bells that you heard in the beginning. Since the song "Black Sabbath" is about a man dying and going to hell, it can be speculated that this was the priest.
As young kids under 10, we had a stereo in the basement. my oldest brother had his bedroom down there. If you turned off the lights it was basically pitch black. Outside of his bedroom in the rec room was an old console stereo with radio and turntable upon opening the lid; speakers on left and right of coarse all built into the cabinet. There is a small indicator light about the size of a pencil racer head on the stereo and that is all you had in the whole basement and we would turn on this song with the rain and thunder and all. We thought it was cool and it creeped us out because as you say it is sinister and creepy sounding. We would have the volume up so the thunder would rumble little but it wouldn’t be real loud and then that first guitar chord came in blasting it would kind of scare the crap out of us.I remember my older brother and my cousin playing Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin in Cambridge Md.
Strings53 Notlob 😯 what an awesome memory
Black Sabbath started as a blues/pop band and realised they needed a gimmick. They saw that a horror film called Black Sabbath was played at the local cinema, and was really popular. So they thought "Let's scare the crap out of people". Tony Iommi had an accident at work and lost the ends of a couple of fingers. He moulded some plastic caps and showed the doctors they were wrong about playing guitar again .
so ahead of their time...
Rob Halford said this the scariest song ever written. I agree with Rob Halford.
This is an iconic riff and song. When I heard this as a kid, it was the first time I was scared of a song. There is a whole genre of metal based on this song and album, called Doom Metal. It’s worth noting that none of them are satanists. They just want to create the appeal of going to a scary movie, in their music.
Satan´s coming for the Sippingtons drinks cabinet and that hat too 👺😄 «The 3 notes» that this tune is built around...awesome and very effective. Lots of great music to explore in Black Sabbath´s catalogue. 1970-75 with Ozzy and then the Dio years.

As a 16 year year old, I sat in the dark crossed legged on the floor listening to that intro as the first song of their concert during Black Sabbath’s first UK tour and knew that music had changed forever.
It incredible that so many people are hearing the early sounds of Sabbath for the first time.
