Playing As Commander Is Secretly The Best Way To Play Hell Let Loose

- The Commander role is one of the best, the easiest and the most rewarding roles to play in Hell Let Loose and if you haven’t already then you really need to try it.
For me, the Commander role offers the perfect combination of effort vs reward and is hands down the most satisfying class to play. In many ways it’s a lot like truck driving or being self employed. You get to be your own boss and make your own decisions while still having a few very important jobs to carry out for the team, but I feel like there’s a lot of stigma surrounding the commander seat that makes people think that it must be really difficult and involve a ton of responsibility, and if the team loses then everyone’s gonna get mad at you and blame you for everything and hunt you down and murder your pet hamster’s first born child, but in reality, playing as the Commander is actually a pretty easy and stress free job, especially if you feel like just sort of doing your own thing while still contributing to the team in a big way.

As much as I agree that more people should try going commander, there is also a lot of people out there that are simply not suited for the task, if you know what I mean. :)

Thanks for the tips! I love playing commander after not playing until I was in the 90s, it’s an easy way to level up and when your team is good it makes the game so fun to play
My biggest piece of advice is tell 1 squad with a mic to defend and 1 to be near the point to defend but not in the hard point. Then let the rest do what they want and given what they request
Join a server with nobody in it, take Commander role, and play around with their abilities on the map. Click the option, click the map (play with the angles for strafing runs and such) and then click on the confirm action button next to the ability in the list. Good way to practice
Last night, we were pushed back to the last point very quickly in Stalingrad with a vacant commander spot. A reluctant hero stepped up to take the role with no commander experience and we ended up winning 5-0 thanks to his efforts and some phenomenal SLs.
I also like when SLs assign support guys to build their own garries, and not just sit back and wait for me as commander to build all their garries for them.
Yeah, or rely purely on supply drops which give the garrisons position away before it's even built

I'm just about to hit level 60 and I tried commanding two times. Lost both, but it was overall pretty fun, and one of them we just couldn't cap last point on offense, but everything went smoothly till then. Really enjoyed you giving tips about commanding in this more "passive" way, since I think this would've helped a lot more
At lvl 300+ I still feel i need to know more to command. May give it ago again..(:
You don't really mention it, but people can see it: check the map often. As a commander you need to be even more aware of the battlefield as a whole rather than the next square on the map. I love playing commander too. But not all the time, as playing with a proper squad is even more fun.
I was getting annoyed editing this video trying to sift through clips of me constantly opening and closing the map every 2 seconds to keep an eye on the fight, trying to find some footage that was more video friendly and wouldn't give someone a seizure lol. You're 100% right, and tbh I do it so often I don't even think about it! It's definitely worth pointing out :)
I just started to get into the commander role, i had around 5 matches so far. I really was a bit scared and watched a whole lot of guides, mainly by Commander Crane in preperation, before i dared the leap. I can confirm, in terms of communication it is much easier than SL and the feeling when you win is really nice. But sometimes it could get a bit repetitive and when you get constantly killed by the enemy recons while trying to set up backup garrisons it could get frustrating.
Yeah I definitely feel that... Getting shot in the middle of nowhere as you try to build a garri or right as you open the map to spawn in a tank for someone can be really frustrating lol.
Thanks! Love your channel. I hate to differ, but in my experience I'd have to say knocking commanders is rather normal. The HLL community is good, like people say, but where the toxicity does show up tends to be in command chat. And, often enough, some players do dish on commanders in team text chat. Nonetheless, your encouragement and guidance makes me want to try it sometime. :)

That's really generous of you :) If you decide to try commander again and want a bit of a safe guarded experience I'd strongly recommend one of 'The Circle' servers, ideally Server #2 which is auto-restricted to level 75+ only, so the matches tend to be top notch more often than not!
Yeah, cause you maybe someone who actually understands the role. You won’t know if you don’t try. I do officer if there’s a squad without one. But most the time there’s no comms and tons of confusion on my part. I want a commander who goes “k you got here and build this, G squad you go to this point and defend, A squad start getting nodes up and set up fortifications mid friendly territory”. But usually it’s very difficult to get to an area just to build a garrison. So much goes into it and the stars must align for it to work out. I’ll head south west of point to build with my support, get there and there’s a lead dropping a Gary. Ok no problem let’s go over here, oh nvm we lost/won. lol hll is awesome
The commander role makes me sometimes feel like I’m playing a rts. Its my first rank 10 role such a blast!

In one sided games commander barely matters in really hard fought matches it seems like all that matters is the commander
1,100 hrs played and I just played a few times as commander for the first time. It's not as intimidating as I thought it was.

So many bad commanders out there. Some people just aren’t meant to do it. There needs to be a minimum level to be a commander
I've had matches where one asshole SL will blame you for everything, give you bad advice and bad information thinking they know better when they don't, etc, but it's not the whole team. Overall the community is good, but be ready to take a little unjustified criticism on occasion.
Crappy micromanaging squad leads kill my urge to play commander.
I hate when commanders don't realize that they're just in a glorified support role.
When they think that they're a front-line fighter and all they have to do is chase kills (bombing runs when no infantry is nearby and ready to take advantage), and do supply drops (leaving it all up to the squad leaders to build garrisons)
Im a new commander done fairly well thanks to good groups but one quick tip i came up with is tell everyone im not passing out anything, tanks etc. until there's nodes built. No point in even going out there without that. I lost a game due to that i said never again lol 😆
