  • iap.healthphone... - IAP HealthPhone is an initiative of HealthPhone™, conducted under the aegis of Indian Academy of Pediatrics, in partnership with the Ministry of Women and Child Development, UNICEF, Aamir Khan and with support from Vodafone.
The Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) in partnership with HealthPhone, on 2 June 2015 launched IAP HealthPhone programme, the world's largest digital mass education programme to tackle the challenge of malnutrition in mothers and children, at the national-level in India.
IAP HealthPhone is a public private partnership initiative that is supported by Vodafone India. It is a unique programme that leverages the increasing penetration of mobile phones in the country to educate over 6 million girls and women between 13 and 35 years of age and their families on better health and nutrition practices by 2018.
The programme will achieve its objectives by widely promoting and distributing four re-edited videos from the Poshan series, jointly produced by MWCD and UNICEF in 18 Indian languages. The Poshan videos address issues of status of women, the care of pregnant women and children under two, breastfeeding and the importance of balanced diet, health and simple changes in nutritional care practices that can notably enhance nutrition levels.
    Malnutrition in India
Malnutrition in children and women remains as one of the greatest challenges in India. Malnutrition remains a major threat to the survival, growth and development of children.
Today, nearly every second child in India is a victim of malnutrition. It means they are physically and mentally weak due to which they are targets to many ailments, deformities, disabilities and allergies affecting normal growth mentally and physically.
Malnutrition is a lack of the right nutrients in the body.
You can protect the expecting mother and child from malnutrition. Just remember these four things.
One - Expecting mothers should get the correct diet. A quarter portion more than usual. 75% of new mothers in India are anaemic and most put on less weight during pregnancy than they should. This leads to unhealthy foetal growth, low birth weight and non-genetic congenital abnormalities in babies.
Two - Mother's first milk is the best, don't throw it away, make sure your child gets it. Colostrum is essential because it prepares the baby's digestive system for the mature milk that the baby will receive in the next few days. Colostrum is rich in nutrients such as zinc, calcium and vitamins.
Three - The child should only be breastfed for the first six months and nothing else, not even water. Exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months reduces infant mortality due to protection from common childhood illnesses such as diarrhoea or pneumonia, and helps for a quicker recovery during illness.
Four - When the child enters the seventh month, balance mother's milk with a nutritious diversified diet. From the seventh month, breast milk is no longer enough to meet the nutritional needs of the infant. Timely, adequate, frequent and appropriate complementary feeding should be started.
The videos are available in 18 Languages: Hindi, English, Assamese, Bengali, Garo, Gujarati, Kannada, Khasi, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Mizo, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu
