Drove the MK 2 Ferret from early 1974 to 1975 aged 17, with 2nd Troop C Sqn, 4/7 RDG. UK, Cyprus (during the invasion), then NI. Mothballed our Chieftains and played at being the UK Independent Armoured Recce Sqn for 12 months. Was turret crew, gunner / loader radio operator, but had to train up to drive the Ferrets. We collected our Ferrets refurbished from the store at Luggershall. We pumped the GCP 15 times in all gears, first with the transfer box in Forward, then the same in Reverse. The Ferret is really as fast in reverse as forward, if you are brave enough. 😮 Fond memories of the little Ferret.
Loads of respect, we didn't serve in the forces but love the vehicles, we appreciate those who did serve and raise cash for the RBL whenever we can. I've managed 30mph backwards at an airfield! Scary stuff!
Well i don't remember all the pre start bits light that Basically after a full overhaul in the workshops,we would just get in hit the start and away we would go
I owned and drove 2 Ferret Scout Cars and a Humber Pig, not at the same time mind you. I would leave the kids at school and collect them on occasions. With runs down the coast for an ice cream or two,in the early 90’s living in Northern Ireland it was Fun. At RUC checkpoints I would be waved through, looking at my rear view mirrors there expression was WTF? The only vehicles I ever bought that made me money, they featured in the James Nesbit film Bloody Sunday.
You're right, but this still doesn't stop that happening if you're not very positive with the gear changes! Needs a good boot every time to avoid steering wheel damage to the left knee.
Possibly, but the tanks take a while to start up and warm up too, so probably OK. Also, the Ferret is more likely to go ahead of the tanks and report back, then stay out of the way!
Remember the Ferret while stationed in Berlin in 74/75 during field maneuvers. Great job!
Much respect to you - this Ferret was BAOR from 67 to 78 with 4RTR, Royal Signals and TACP (FAC). Later it went to Cyprus with Lancers/Hussars.

No idea where it was built, I'm afraid, it was one of a batch of 100 delivered to the MOD in 1959.
