What he misses is what this does to the game's design.
With third-party gold sellers, Blizzard doesn't particularly care if people are buying gold. It doesn't substantially influence design decisions.
With first-party gold sellers, it has massive effects.
Wonder why they don't do something about the game's economy being dominated by carrying? Why don't they deal with party finder being flooded with carries? Because if people are buying WoW tokens for the gold to buy the carries, Blizzard is making money off of them!
Got to exalted and you finally go to get your mount reward, only to discover it costs 100k gold too? How convenient - just buy a WoW token! What are you going to do, just give up? You already spent so much time farming the rep. C'mon, you can splurge on a WoW token, you earned it!
Huh, those potions sure are expensive right at the beginning of the first raid tier of the expansion. Is your team going to skip mythic raiding? Or are you going to do hours upon hours of mindless gold farming? No - you're going to buy a WoW token.
Only a few players buy BoEs, though they're often really expensive (read: bought with WoW tokens). But hey, now everyone needs a legendary, and almost everyone will be buying it with gold from the AH! Time for some WoW tokens to get your legendary!
WoW tokens mean huge incentives for Blizzard to set gold prices to drive token sales. And to slow down farming. And to increase gold sinks.
Even if some of these changes aren't purposeful, if you accidentally create a pinch on mythic raiders that's leading them all to buy WoW tokens to afford potions, you're probably not going to put fixing it at the top of your to-do list.

The whole legendary system is the most shameless facet of this and people still defend ot under the pretence of "well it's the community that is setting the price range, not blizzard's fault", as if you'd need to be some brainiac to guess what was gonna happen with sellable player power.

    • @naoko3749
      @naoko3749 3 года назад +10

The downfall of the MMO genre was mobile games. You can't compete with the cost-to-profit of a mobile game. They can be developed by a team of like, 4 people and a dog, yet still rake in hundreds of thousands a year. Candy Crush is Activision-Blizzard's fattest cash cow, by the way. Not WoW or CoD.
Moving to MTX is one of the few ways to keep an MMORPG alive as it gets older and older. Especially when the level of content increases with each expansion, meaning more development costs. And you can't increase the price of a sub even years after release (note: say hello to inflation at this point), because that kills playerbase. Lower playerbase means less subscribers.

True very true. That's what I've been telling my friends that spent alot of real money in dota and other games, tho most of it just purely cosmetic. I told them it doesn't matter since they have a job, they enjoy the game then why not. If they don't smoke or drink then that's a shit load of money saved. People spend it on things that entertains them, and if game is your main entertainment then why the fuck not.
Only difference is that, you're not in a denial that WoW is pay-to-win while there's some here that for whatever reason there is, to deny that WoW is P2W. Like maplestory, almost everyone in the community know its P2W and no one is even trying to deny that fact. As long as non paying players could also achieve the same thing with the exchange of grinding and farm.
Though, I gotta say i kinda despise the idea of subscription based game have the option of P2W. Imo, cash shop shouldn't even exist on subs game unless it's purely cosmetic with no distinct advantage. To be fair FF14 has the same shit as well, just that their cash shop is not as impactful but there's still a tiny bit element of P2W there. Thank god it's only limited to the extent of 4-seat mount.
I have not much issue with WoW and FF14 having level boost, as there's not much point in boosting if you're super new to the game. It just make life harder instead. It caters well to players who have played and understand the game, but just don't have the time to play through all the levels. That really ain't too much of P2W in my book.

@@shroomiestshroom3655 MMOs are a niche game for a niche audience. MMOs take way more development and money than any other game genre, because MMOs are designed with the intention of lasting forever, they also target a much smaller audience than other games. MMOs are the riskiest form of game you can develop nowadays. You have to design for longevity, and also make it fun while maintaining a gameplay that keeps people playing and paying. MMOs cannot be small, there has to be a large amount of content on release and every free update to keep people playing as much as possible until the next paid expansion. A company would never be happy with making a minimal profit. MMOs have a small audience that gets spread out more and more with every decent mmo that comes to market. So they make microtransactions to further milk their small audience so that they can impress their investors and keep the game alive. There are plenty of MMOs that shut down despite having an okay following (a following that might be profitable for a non MMO game) because they were not profitable enough to support the company and its investors. This is the reality of MMOs, Blizzard is the worst earner out of Activision's companies for a reason.
IMO I look at it this way: if a game is fun and I don't feel like I'm losing or losing out by not buying from the microtransaction shop then I really don't care if there is one. When I played CoD (Not saying its an MMO, but it has microtransactions) I abhorred map packs, because they literally divided the playerbase and you couldn't play with everyone without having bought them. I quit WoW because the game was no longer fun, but I would buy a mount or pet from the microtransaction shop every once in a while when I felt the game was fun and kept me playing for hours every day without feeling like I was paying to work a second job.

Missing info: the Lunar Whale is an 8 seater mount (hence the price of $42/33€), and is modeled after the vehicle that the player used to get to the moon in Final Fantasy 4, thus it being one of many homages to that game in FFXIV. Honestly though, I was not willing to spend a dime in the WoW cash shop, becasue the quality of the game didn't warrant extra rewards for the devs, especially not at the price they are sold for. As an added bonus, it's more or less half the price for double the quality compared to the WoW stuff.

Basically catfishing the buyers. Buyer would be like.. how did they know..?

You don't necessarily need to be rich to spend a lot of money in a game. I never got into buying premium currency, but there was one time I was really tempted to:
I was playing Star Trek Online at the time. I was fairly new in the game, and spent a decent amount of time farming Dilithium (a premium currency in that game). There was one point where I got a call from work where I was asked if I could pick up a shift as they were shorthanded. I was making around $15 at the time. I was tempted to say no because I didn't really feel like it, but then it dawned on me that I was going to spend the day farming dilithium. If I went into work instead and just spent the money I made that day and make many times more dilithium. I went into work that day with the intent of using the money I made to buy the currency. By the time I got home I decided against it because I worried it was a rabbit hole I didn't want to go down, but I totally see how people with fairly modest incomes could end up spending a lot of cash based on the same mentality.

I had a horrible experience with this game, going back 10 or so years ago, and I really haven't been able to let it go... I poured my life into this game. And it broke my heart.
You see I'd been playing for years when MOP came out. With a new season of PVP ahead, I saw an opportunity to try and finish a season with a high rating and get rewards and achievements only offered to the top PVP players... Things like exclusive mounts and stuff were on offer for finishing the season with a high rating, and this was no minor feat I was attempting to accomplish...
I put together a guild, and had over 20 good players to assemble 2 Rated Battleground Teams... (RBGs)
It was a hard road, with many lessons learned along the way, but we were progressing through persistence and pure will and making our way up the ranking system.
I was not the greatest leader in the world, and I made a lot of mistakes, but the thing that tore my guild apart was nothing I had any control over...
You see one day we joined a RBG and the other team didn't...
It was odd, to say the least... This was a Rated Battleground, and we were the only ones in it... So, we capped the 3 flags and took the easy win and queued for the next one.
You wouldn't believe our luck! The other team didn't join the battleground again! We capped all 5 nodes and took the easy win...
Our rating was climbing fast, and we hadn't had to do a thing... I was a little concerned, and hoped this wasn't going to come back and bite...
As we joined the next game... Half my team didn't join... On voice chat (Vent) the cries of "MY ACCOUNT IS SUSPENDED" started coming in... Half my team had just had their account suspended, and I only had 5 players in a rated battleground....
Needless to say we got stomped that game...
This broke our guild momentum, instantly. People were scared to even join an RBG game now.
So I opened a ticket to Blizzard GMs and explained everything I just told you above.
The response I received from Blizzard?
"We can not discuss other players account bans with you"
I wrote back and asked again: "As a guild leader what should I do in the event of another team not joining an RBG?"
They responded with "What do you mean they didn't join?"
I opened ANOTHER ticket, again explained my issue... "Other team didn't show up, resulting in my guild members being banned from game"
Blizzard: "We can't discuss other players account bans with you"
And on and on it went like this... Each ticket taking longer and longer to get a response, and every single ticket being replied to from a diferent GM, who I felt I needed to explain my problem all over again to...
Blizzard responses alternating between "What do you mean the other team didn't join" and "We can't discuss other plays account bans with you"
No matter how many times I wrote back. rewording, and re explaining my issue over and over I only ever received those two responses from Blizzard....
The issue completely destroyed my guild and my two RBG teams that I had put my entire life on hold to make...
My one shot at finishing a PVP season with a good rank, my one shot at leading a winning team, torn away from me and I had no way of fixing it...
It totally destroyed my will to play the game ever again...
I think there's a gritty black market that blizzard are aware of and profit from. You only have to open trade channel to see people selling carries for real money... I think there's a pay wall in PVP, and skill alone wont get you the gear you need to get to rating you need to get the gear you need to get the rating............. Without paying someone to carry you there, who already has that gear... And part of that system of carrying people's rating up is first "Tanking Down" their own rating by not joining games... Games which we joined and easily won... And Blizzard know and potentially profit from this black market, and this is why victims of this system (like myself) are subverted and ignored when they point out the side effects

Just gotta say, someone who specializes farming gold paying someone who specializes in running m15s is good for the economy. Both players have value in what they're doing be it selling tmogs/rare mounts/reagents or clearing mythic Janna. As I'm sure mythic raiders get salty when a farmer pays for a run, the farmer is just as salty the raider makes money so easily. Now compare this to someone who buys a token and adds nothing to the economy/playerbase. All they're doing is adding X amount of raw gold to the economy which at this stage in WoW doesn't mean a damn thing.
Also just a side note for the guys video you were watching. I can play WoW and still hate New World's shop. Just cause I play WoW doesn't mean I like the in game store. Mind blowing.

The problem with Quality of Life features in a cash shop is that the only reason you as the player need to pay for that QoL item is because the developer made the game in such a way that it was inconvenient. If they are going to go ahead and scrap the integrity of the game in order to sell QoL because "players will buy it from somebody anyway" or because they are worried about Bill and his 2 hours a week to play, then they COULD just as well just give away the QoL item for free.
But no, they leave the inconvenience in (such as leveling or backpack space) and then sell you the solution. That's gross.
And as for WoW being the same, it was once they added the WoW token. As asmon himself has pointed out in other videos, the difference before the WoW token is there was a risk of being scammed and in the original vanilla run of WoW and TBC, Blizzard had an army of GMs that would respond quickly to tickets and ban people. It was not perfect. But it created a threat of punishment for players that bought accounts or bought gold. They should've grown and expanded that service rather than abandoning it and going full scumlords themselves.

Printing more money doesn’t increase economic output - it only increases the amount of cash circulating in the economy. If more money is printed, consumers are able to demand more goods, but if firms have still the same amount of goods, they will respond by putting up prices. In a simplified model, printing money will just cause inflation. So the same amount of materials just start to cost more and more and more, so they print more and more money and prices go up. It's unsustainable.

Asmon is 100% correct. I was 22 making $35000 a year as an electrical apprentice, lived on my own and I could afford to spend 100$ a week on nhl 13 hut packs for 6 months untill nhl14 came out and I understood just how stupid I was and immediately stopped. Alot of people don't or CAN'T stop. Developers are well aware of this and its disgusting. Imagine how much fun games could actually be if the microtransactions where mechanical in the game and mot a cash trans action.
