You also forgot one very KEY aspect of this. By having a larger margin of profits from internet services they might also get the valuation for being an internet company, having a market cap of 4-5x their revenue instead of 1-1.5x like most hardware companies.
I keep coming back to this video to remind myself to never cheap out on products I use every day. Psst. I see a lot of people talking in the comments about buying a Xiaomi phone and flashing a custom ROM. People don't get the fact the enthusiasts make up a very small percentage of the market. 1 in 10000 people flashing a ROM isn't going to cut down profit. Besides, it's "one more thing to take care of" after you get a new phone.
after MIUI 9 update, many ads in default app from MIUI. such as Mi folder (File Manager), Apps (like playstore, it's just this version of xiaomi), and others. Very different from the default explorer samsung. Ad-free, only a few built-in apps have ads. but xiaomi, just waw after i wonder there are ads that i accidentally tap in recent files.
It used to work on that profit margin which put this company in fortune 500 in 5-6 years. But now they have became greedy and releasing overpriced phones.
Happy for techalter to pursue his passion and make video full time. He explains the business aspects of tech well. He can also grow full hair in one day.
I personally love MIUI and all their inbuilt international apps. Apps like calculator, calendar, explorer, scanner, screen recorder, weather are pretty useful, simple and clean
I've a Xiaomi Mi 9. The hardware is pretty good and cheap. The camera does its job. You get a bunch of storage. But the software is not so good. On the pro side: you get updates which is very rare in an Android environment. But why do I have commercials now in my file manager? Why does the DND mode NOT mute ringtones and notification sounds? How can I switch between vibration mode and completely silent on this phone? You can argue it's possible to flash a custom ROM, but that's not what I want if I buy a new phone.
I wish OnePlus would limit their profits to 5% . OnePlus 6 is a pretty good phone with the few negatives like the increasing price , mediocre camera ,glass back without wireless charging and no IP rating .
You're shortsighted if you sum up the new OnePlus 6 only to that sum of 'defects'. Is the increase in price meaningful? The OnePlus 5t goes for 599E right now, the 6 goes for 519E for the cheapest version and 569E for the medium range. Mediocre camera? Really? If you need more than that camera provides than you must be a professional shooter. Go for the P20 Pro if you want the greatest camera. No IP Rating? It's splash and rain proof last time I checked. If you like to take showers with your phone just pick something else. And regarding wireless charging, what do you prefer..to not have to plug your device in and charge it in 3 hours or plug the cable in and have it fully charged in 30 minutes?
I am pretty sure oneplus had a very small profit margin aswell. You really cant judge a price increase based on the features of the phone. its just scratching the surface of whats really going on behind the scenes there could be 1000 reasons. But generally i agree: its striving away from what it was, op6 is too expensive to be flagship killer but not good enough to be a flagship. now its just the slightly cheaper, slightly worse flagship which has to compete with the real heavy hitters from 3 months ago that have their prices dropped
bigut00bcelelry the place where you live must have really fucked up pricing if the 5t is more expensive than the the 6 . And anyways the 5t has been out of stock since the last few weeks so that point is kind of redundant . The Camera is mediocre compared against the competition which include the likes of pixel 2 and galaxy s9 . Why have a glass back when you're not going to include wireless charging ? So that you can break the phone more easily ? If they are gonna have to have a glass back , we should at least get the advantages of glass and not only the disadvantages ( I'm not mentioning the looks , because that is incredibly subjective ). And what does splash and rain proof mean exactly mean exactly ? It will survive a few drops of water ? At least with an IP rating you have a guarantee . Rain proof ? Maybe very light rain ? I wouldn't put too much confidence in OnePlus's claims
I highly doubt that they make only 5% out of phones. Yesterday I was at Mi Store opening and there was 30% of their phones etc. I highly doubt they would sell over 3k hardware devices from A to Z all bellow it's prize.
The trick is to not fall in love with a brand. I bought a Huawei phone when they were trying to conquer Europe. They offered good phones at cheaper prices than the competition. As years went by, they established themselves and bumped up the prices. So the next phone that I purchased was a Xiaomi because they are the new kids in Europe. By the time I would buy a new phone, xiaomi will probably charge more for a phone than previously so I will chose the next upcoming brand that wants a place umder the sun. So IMO brand loyalty is a bad thing.
nah, you can use xiaomi phone without using their services, like rooting. but printer will constantly update their printer so 3rd party ink will not be usable.

Bing is profitable search engine just for being present as a default option on many devices, Xiaomi strategy is similar to amazon's, they want to make money in the future and cheap hardware is an excellent way to acquire customers.
its not that easy... at the end of the day they want to make 900 dollars on selling a phone to someone just like apple does... its just unlike apple who can put the whole phone cost upfront, they are trying make there money over the long run by offering services you will get into on there phones... the problem with this is nobody they have to deal with a much larger market in the west where those services might be better done by smaller companies that charge less or give away the stuff for free.
Well , chinese manufacturers make cheap smartphones that those who cant afford a good smartphone , can ...at a cheap price. They are helping the world unite . I am an Indian and where you might asume me to hate chinese companies , but I dont because not everybody is born so rich and they are helping their consumers by creating good quality products for them at a cheap price. Also most people don't care about their money making strategies as long as it doesn't get on their nerve like amazon adds ...hell even apple has a similar money making strategy . DONT KNOW WHY YOU HATE XIAOMI SO MUCH.
I'm spiritual Mi fan from China though I haven't used any Xiaomi smartphone.(I have many Mi home devices like vacuum robot, automatic curtain and so on.) From my perspective, what touches me most is the goal of this company: " to make amazing products that touch your heart with honest pricing". And I think they did it.
Satinder Kaur Because they make sub par products. Their products are ok at best, but will not able to compete with and Samsung. Go earn money and buy yourself a proper device. Using xiaomi is like using tech from 2 years back.
Satinder Kaur they aren't a charity everything has a caveat. They are probably selling your data to the Chinese government. And it is well know that there's a backdoor in some apps which they can exploit
Konata Izumi *flagship product 2 years back, and I'm not even talking about xiaomi's high end devices - mi mix 2, mi 6. They offer great devices for a great price. Not everybody has money or compelling usecase to spend 800-1000 usd on a phone. What do you mean by "make enough money"? For some people spending half of their monthly salary on a device is unreasonable ,when you have mortgage, wife and kids. Essentialy their budget devices would get the job done, without much of the sacrifices. It's stupid to treat luxury devices as a modern standart, as much as you would want to.
To be fair, they still have that aggressive pricing on other products. I bought two Bluetooth speakers, their highest quality earphones, a battery bank, and a Bluetooth weighing scale. All are nice except my two Xiaomi routers which needs better software.
Currently using Redmi 5a and this is what I can tell you. Xiaomi is earning money from Google, Microsoft amd other internet companies. Not being able to uninstall Google & Microsoft Apps forces users to use these apps which means money to Google and later to Xiaomi.
This is equivalent to adding a bunch of Chinese bloatware apps (Baidu keyboard, Baidu search, Sina Weibo, etc.) on their Chinese versions of their phones at least the Global version have just Google and Microsoft apps.
And they increased the price of the RN5 Pro by 15$ few weeks after this announcement. Just a load of lies tbh. Also, Google apps are already installed in Xiaomi phones in India. Xiaomi is a huge brand in India.
I have a xiaomi redmi note 9 pro, and I turned off all the ads since first day, and now I don't receive any, so eventually how can xiaomi make profit if users can block ads????
Xiaomi's this business model isn't going to work for enthusiast users because in my opinion the first thing to do after buying a Xiaomi device is to root it and get rid of its obnoxious MIUI and put some good Custom ROM on it.
I AM using MI and I've never come across ads from MI on my phone. Mi's own Appstore is sometimes reminds me about app updates but it can be switched off easily. It updates the Android frequently. With Android 8 you have enough control over which apps have which access rights. Maybe it collects data secretly but it wouldn't be more than Google does. By the way secondary store and double apps is a must have feature for a phone with two lines.
I use Xiaomi 1. I've turned off almost all advertisement placements 2. Turned off all anonymous user data collection options (even cloud, free upto 15 GB limit) 3. Not a single bloatware, even a few Google apps like Hangout (Even Xiaomi's own Music player and browser) 4. I kinda like MIUI, it gives you tons more customisation than stock Android. 5. Last month my phone completed its third year, with not a single issue, ever.
That's why they never reveal their technical stuff used inside those mobile device 🤔 !!!! Because if that happened, people will be able to instantly install Stock Android with less ads! 😮
INDroid What you mean "they never reveal thechnical stuff used in device", and actually you can install custom rom on xiaomi phones, i have one with installed stock oreo 8.1
INDroid actually Xiaomi was famous for encouraging users (especially geeks) to install 3 party ROMs, now Xiaomi adds some restriction(like you need to verify that you are aware of the possible danger when unlocking the bootloader, and then Xiaomi offers an official toolbox to do that for you by one-click.)to enhance the stability of the phone since increasing user base. But Xiaomi's still one of the few companys that still keeps warranty after the customer flashed a 3 party ROM. So it's not actually a conspiracy stuff.
when you buy directly from china, it will just have miui bloatware and no playstore, which is equivalent to playstore + google's bloated apps. either way i am fine as long as it's cheap (well, don't ever complain to something cheap, right ?) since i don't use google stock apps either. they're not as bad as xiaomi but still bad. yeah, i don't even use chrome. i don't even use Google play service & playstore, the ultimate battery draining combo. CM browser old version (best adblock, not even captcha can enter, it will just automatically check the captcha box), nextcloud (google drive fork but unlimited), a+ calender, modified miui-based camera, keepvid (youtube replacement+downloader, better than installing youtube+ youtube downloader from xposed), and other awesome third party apps. people are always aiming at a phone with stock android, and then installing loads of apps themselves, then what the hell is the purpose of having clean stock android ?
I really really love this channel, your analyses on technology & business is on another level been a fan since i found this channel as always GREAT VIDEO.
He works in china. Hes literally worked with many of these chinese mobile companies and is just sharing info about them, he knows more about chinese companies than western lol
You raise good points. I would also say that, yes, clearly they are playing the long game. Not only do they intend on selling users services, but I think that they also want to build loyalty( The fact that their phones are incredible value for money & the user forums support this). I heard somewhere that they intend on creating a captive market for their later generations of products [AC units, cleaning robots, things they haven't even invented yet etc] via this strategy. This is especially powerful given the rise of the middle class in China. I think it's excellent strategy- run at a loss now, yes, but hopefully you can ride the investment capital long enough to cash in on all the loyal customers.
Its like amazon fire HDX where they sold the devices to basically that the hardware costed (and lost money due to things like marketing, taxes etc), but shipped it without google play and forced people to use the amazon store.
You're right, but that does not mean Xiaomi phones are not worth it anymore. You can disable advertising in the App Settings and disable data transfer in Settings under _Additional Settings > Revoke & Recovation_ and delete all data from the servers.
Really fascinating and well put video. I find Xiaomi quite an admirable and interesting company, with smart business practices, a clean and understandable design philosophy, tied together by decently manufactured, utilitarian, and modern products.
I am using Xiaomi phones since a decade.. And I can confidently say Xiaomi hardware is awesome. May not be as good as Huawei but definitely on par with Apple, Samsung ..
My friend your analysis is amazing. Did you study business or something. What makes you able to see companies moves with a totally different eye than most tech RUclipsrs? Keep up the good work, you deserve more subscribers.
Great video. Given Xiaomi's strategy, I wonder why they even bother with Android One versions of their phones. And which of their models they choose to have A1 edition is also strange.
2:06 Apple is so good at this tactic. They make so much money from selling hardware as well as internet services. A few good example is iTunes Music, iCloud Service, App store(30% of profit goes to Apple). They have full control of their hardware and software which makes Apple so successful in the tech market.
I dont know what PR means and you mention that repeatedly through the video, so i feel I'm missing a big part of the information, please the first time you mention an acronym explain what does it mean so the people who is not expert in the subject can understand
i have a xiaomi international model mi mix3 and have never seen an ad unless you count the reminders to use their cloud services every now and then to back up your sms messages. the prices they charge for the hardware is ridiculously low compared to the rest of the industry. this plus the fact that they officially support unlocking the bootloader on their phones means i will be buying xiaomi phones for the foreseeable future.

I think the poll resulted to Mi A1 😂
I have a xiaomi redmi note 9 pro, and I turned off all the ads since first day, and now I don't receive any, so eventually how can xiaomi make profit if users can block ads????
Why does Mi A1 has stock Android One ?
Shivam Singh it's an android one phone!
for marketing their hardware to users who hate miui maybe
i have been using xiaomi since two years, never seen any ads or used any specific xiaomi service
Hhhhhhh that was before you cut off your hair
such good content you‘re putting out! Thank you Sir
Xiaomi's this business model isn't going to work for enthusiast users because in my opinion the first thing to do after buying a Xiaomi device is to root it and get rid of its obnoxious MIUI and put some good Custom ROM on it.
Gurpinder Singh miui is better many custom ROMs Are unstable miui is pretty good and you'll get updates for like 5 years
uwin Vidanage but will you trade that for ads, duplicate apps and privacy invasion?
Ethereal Di I use Redmi Note 3 pro with MIUI 9.5 china. I don't find any ads on settings, security apps, anything, including file manager.
Ethereal Di I just bought a Xiaomi Redmi 5 plus and for the past month of usage I haven't seen any ads anywhere at all.
uwin Vidanage lul because you're a shit ui does not mean that stock android shit and about 5 years update that only shit ui update not android
They also have Android One smartphones (like the Mi a1 and A2/ A series), and for those, they rely more on hardware than on software.
"That's not how capitalism works xD
Now let me tell you about how Xiaomi uses a currently trending capitalist profit model."
Didn't he go bald?
@@Neiva71 fast but sparse
I use Xiaomi
1. I've turned off almost all advertisement placements
2. Turned off all anonymous user data collection options (even cloud, free upto 15 GB limit)
3. Not a single bloatware, even a few Google apps like Hangout (Even Xiaomi's own Music player and browser)
4. I kinda like MIUI, it gives you tons more customisation than stock Android.
5. Last month my phone completed its third year, with not a single issue, ever.
This is root city now!
One more thing, Mr. Lei is a big fan of Costco Wholesale, who explains some principles of Xiaomi and made similar announcements on net profit.
So it's not actually a conspiracy stuff.
when you buy directly from china, it will just have miui bloatware and no playstore, which is equivalent to playstore + google's bloated apps.
either way i am fine as long as it's cheap (well, don't ever complain to something cheap, right ?)
since i don't use google stock apps either. they're not as bad as xiaomi but still bad. yeah, i don't even use chrome. i don't even use Google play service & playstore, the ultimate battery draining combo.
Malik give me a link to download the cm browser you have, also the nextcloud app plz.
lineage exist for all xiaomi phonew
I really really love this channel, your analyses on technology & business is on another level been a fan since i found this channel as always GREAT VIDEO.
7.01 Bahubali ❤
Sayooj Radhakrishnan 😂
Informative video Martin!
However, you could elaborate a little more on what their internet services are and how they make money.
Keep up the work!!!
since you've been attacking nonstop & very freely on Chinese brands and their strategies, but left out many western ones, all i've been seeing is Bias
Sean Phạm he is not attacking the brand, he is just explaining its strategies to the public and explaining its good and bad points! Calm down!
He works in china. Hes literally worked with many of these chinese mobile companies and is just sharing info about them, he knows more about chinese companies than western lol
Yup so much negativity especially about Xiaomi...
Anyways who gives a duck..
Xiaomi is killing every other brand in India.
ehh whats western phone brands? apple blueberry?
It’s hardly to mention which the western brand is. Almost all of them based on China and Korea. Even Motorola owned by Lenovo, a Chinese company
WOW, the detail you put in your videos is amazing. Keep up the work man!
Its like amazon fire HDX where they sold the devices to basically that the hardware costed (and lost money due to things like marketing, taxes etc), but shipped it without google play and forced people to use the amazon store.
7:04 - I swear I've seen that girl elsewhere many times already. Who she?
You're right, but that does not mean Xiaomi phones are not worth it anymore. You can disable advertising in the App Settings and disable data transfer in Settings under _Additional Settings > Revoke & Recovation_ and delete all data from the servers.
Your point of view merges tech and business. Besides, it's always very accurate and well put! Congratulations!
Really fascinating and well put video. I find Xiaomi quite an admirable and interesting company, with smart business practices, a clean and understandable design philosophy, tied together by decently manufactured, utilitarian, and modern products.
I'm a Xiaomi hardware user, I love their products but I don't like miui so I'm using custom room os instead.
Looks like the marketing genius at Xiomi learned from SkillShare
“Congratulations! Your bullshit detectors are working.”
I love this phrase, I need to use it some day.
I am using Xiaomi phones since a decade.. And I can confidently say Xiaomi hardware is awesome. May not be as good as Huawei but definitely on par with Apple, Samsung ..
You are so good that I can't put it in words.
My friend your analysis is amazing. Did you study business or something. What makes you able to see companies moves with a totally different eye than most tech RUclipsrs? Keep up the good work, you deserve more subscribers.
One of the best Tech you tube channel. Keep it up bro, more power to you :)
Great video. Given Xiaomi's strategy, I wonder why they even bother with Android One versions of their phones. And which of their models they choose to have A1 edition is also strange.
How do you manage to connect so well the video content with the advertisement in the end?
Just invested $1000 to XIACF, year 2030 cant wait.
how is it going?
kinda like printers: sold at a loss, but the ink is basically theft.
Very informative. Thanks for posting.
2:51 that's not too accurate... Windows is like Battlefront 2, it still tries to milk you even after you bought their product.
2:06 Apple is so good at this tactic. They make so much money from selling hardware as well as internet services. A few good example is iTunes Music, iCloud Service, App store(30% of profit goes to Apple). They have full control of their hardware and software which makes Apple so successful in the tech market.
Great video as always! Guess this one was in the works while you released the news!
I think google aid them in financing since cheap phones will grow android buisness exponentially
Fantastic Dissection! Subscriberd ✌🏼
I have a xiaomi for more than a year and half and I've seen virtualy 0 ads on my phone
Excellent job on the sponsor spot!
I am using mi a1, xiomi did not ship any of their app in this device , I think you are totally wrong in this
Great info post as always and I was more comfortable with the old look and old logo for some reason 🙈
Bro, paid software is not the business model for mi, but the service ... so they can provide free software ...
