    Thanks for the video John. In the 80's the building under the signs on farmers avenue was a amusement arcade. On the opposite side of the road was zaks burger hut on the edge of the car park. I always remember the manager at the old abc/cannon cinema. Was a right misery guts and reminded me of Mr Bronson out of Grange Hill.

      Thanks very much for the info Andrew. Did Zaks move across the road, as I can definitely remember it near those advertising boards?

    Thanks for that. I frequented many of the drinking establishments shown in the video! In the 1980’s I worked at Anchor House near the Anchor Wine Bar.

    It’s hard to believe that the 1980s were around 40 years ago! Very interesting to be reminded how much has changed and stayed the same!

    Another cracking video John. Norwich Camera Centre was my late Uncle Gordon’s business - it was originally located in a smaller shop unit just round the corner in White Lion Street and he eventually relocated to premises in Timberhill which I think is still a camera shop.

    • @JohnAtkinsLostNorwich
      @JohnAtkinsLostNorwich  9 месяцев назад

      Some great additional details there, thanks Martin! There's another comment on here saying that the basement of the shop was haunted.

    Excellent, very interesting. We did have colour photographs back then though.

      Thank you, glad you found it interesting. As for colour photos, George Plunkett's archive is my main source and the vast majority of his are black and white. The very few colour ones he did were, paradoxically, much earlier than the 1980s.

    I believe that the grain warehouse, viewed from the opposite bank of the river, is a private home. They kept the outside look of the warehouse, but furnished the interior in a 'loft style.' I visited, an 'Open Studio' several years ago.

    Great informative video again John.
    The house in Cowgate was owned and lived in until the late 70's by the Price sisters. It was their family that owned Price's Dept store on Botolph St, just up from Barclays bank on Stump Cross.

    First of all, were the 1980s really 40 years ago?! Wow, it seems like only yesterday. Interesting to see that some areas have changed significantly during that period but also that some have not changed much at all. I remember the cinemas being busy with lots of good films to see. I did wonder why so many of the 80s photographs were in black and white, but then I saw your response about George Plunkett's archive being mainly in black and white. I thought you were being artistic with your editing! Another well-researched and edited video - very enjoyable, thank you 😊

    • @JohnAtkinsLostNorwich
      @JohnAtkinsLostNorwich  9 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you, yes indeed those 1980s seem like yesterday! It is interesting that the photos suggest limited change over those 40 years, whereas the 40 before had much more.

    I was born in 1987 (in the old N&N of course) so I don't remember much of this. Would love to see a video just like this, but of the mid to late nineties, when my memory should kick in!
    Also John I wondered if you'd considered a small map up in the top corner as you do these tours around the city, maybe it could animate around as the photos progress. No idea how you'd do it but it might add a little 😊

    • @JohnAtkinsLostNorwich
      @JohnAtkinsLostNorwich  9 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks Luke, great comment. Maybe next year's first video will be back to the 90s, we'll see! As for the map, I'm not sure I'm talented enough to do such a thing, but I agree it would be a great idea. If you look at the map at the beginning of this video, it has little green dots showing where the photos were taken.

    It's good to see that Little Bethel Street is being refurbished; much better than the 80s photo. 😊
    When the new Odeon opened in the early 70s, my dad and mum went to see a film there and they booked 'Pullman seats' that were better padded and had higher backs, but more expensive as my mum had developed neck trouble by then. Nothing was too good for my mum - ! 😊

    Happy New Year John, congratulations on your 100th Video, most of the earlier photos cover the period when I lived in Scotland and Germany with the RAF, so fills a missing period, thanks. Its made me think how little we visited Norwich in those years, especially when in Germany, when we had little chance, as Family always wanted to come out to us.
