The tools used in your video offers a great flexibility and you put me in the right direction to solve some problems I saw with the unit. It saved me hours of search. I just managed to install pure data and loopMidi and make it work nearly on the first try. Now I have to analyze your files to find out, how pure data works. I just purchased the x touch yesterday. I really wish I had seen this video first. Firstly a lot of time and effort put in by Paulo and he was kind enough to share this, thanks. For me it would have shown the incredible lack of implementation for cubsse out of the box. I would have surely not purchased the unit seeing this video first. I already have the full set of cmc controllers which are pretty good but always miss having minimum of 8 faders and the scribble strips. I will try and add as much additional functions as I can by using generic remote. But unsure if a lot of the buttons which seem to do nothing will be recognised. Not sure if this question has already been asked, I did scroll through the comments, if Paulo could make his template available to download I would be happy to pay for it. OOPS, I have just noticed the show more button above. this takes you to all the files needed :-) many thanks.
Paulo This is awesome. I have something similar I wrote in Python but this gives me lots of ideas to improve it. When I'm done I'll post it here if you want to try it.

This is mind blowing stuff! I use a Qcon ProX with extender in my Cubase studio setup and as it uses the Mackie control protocol I assume this could work with that. I will need to get my head around this though. It is exciting and overwhelming in equal measures. Thanks for opening up the possibilities though.
Glad you liked it, man!! It is indeed a really nice way to work with cubase. I never tested with a QCon ProX but I briefly tested with an iPad app that simulates Mackie Control and it worked the same way my XTouch worked, so, I think that it will work ok with your QCon ProX.. Lately Cubase addressed this with the new Midi Remote, but there are some glitches that keep me looking for this type of solutions (like the controller's buttons LED's not being toggled....) I recomend you an app, Keyboard Maestro, to go along with your workflow (you'll love it) Recently I am integrating ElGato Stream Deck XL which is SUPERB. I've been refusing to use it becuase I preffer to, with MIDI, modify my controllers using different pages to make them do what I want, I've even have use a small Akai Mini, change page an the keys are shortcuts to my workflow.... BUT, I forget or mistake sometimes the keys and shortcuts. . . so I have to Label everything. . . . finally, it is not very usable. So with the StreamDeck, every button changes according to the page its in, and I can customize all the Dynamic Icons. . . it is a great addition now. So my motorized faders and midi controllers work great now, and all it is a rather easy setup between Cubase, KeyBoard Maestro and StreamDeck.

This video really helped demonstrate a better much more efficient workflow and many like myself are very appreciative of the effort you've put in here. I just had a quick question -- would I need to modify the Max or PD files if I only have the X-Touch without the Extender? I'll only have access to 8 tracks at any one time. Hey man.. glad you found the video useful. It was indeed a nice effort to make this whole thing work. :P If you don't use the extender, you have to modify the section where I tell Max (or PD) to repeat the Note 46 or 47... because this is the area where it makes the jump from 16 channels instead of 8. I just need to click and delete this information on the blue square (in Max). Other problem that you may face is that I disabled the knob press button to use this function for opening plugins widows, but if you are trying to use the Cubase EQ, you have to press the knob to activate a particular band and it will not work for you. Since I have the extender, I use my Extender to do the EQs (because it's knobs are not disabled) and use my main unit to open plugins. You will have to choose. (Personaly, I would leave the knobs for the plugin window). Let me know if you have any other question. I'll gladly try to help!
Excelent and very informative work! Many web pages I visited trying to decide on a daw controller pointed to this and your blog post. I received the main unit yesterday (sadly can't get the extender for a while) and I have a question: On your blog you say you figured a BIG workaround for auto banking, do you have a tutorial or at least any pointers as to what to do for that? Hey Esteban. I haven't published yet anything about the Autobank workaround because my Max file evolved and it's even more "convoluted" thank this current video. With more features and I still didn't have time to clean it and (maybe) make another video with it. The path I found to make the Autobank is to Add a WK-ID controller to your remote controller options and send it's midi out to any available virtual port you may have. the WK-ID was the only out of ALL others that sent the information about the current selected channel via SysEx. So, every time I click on the channel, the WK-ID remote control will send a sysex Info that has the channel number.. The trick is to, inside max (this patch i made was not for PureData), capture the correct SysEx, convert the bytes to integer (to get the real current channel number) and do a simple math to find out what bank this channel belongs to. After that, I just had to go to the first bank (simulating a "Previous Page" button press several times) and then going forward to the selected bank)... It's a pretty convoluted solution but at least it works..

It sounds convoluted, yes (I'm pretty new to this but i'll give it a shot, best way to learn), but even so it's waaaaay better than not having that functionality. After doing the resarch for which DAW controller to buy, it seems this is quite widespread. Every mackie universal solution has this issue, and only Eucon controllers (in some cases), Steinbergs CC121 and the original faderport 1 have that built in., which is baffling. Seems the only way to have all of this quality-of-life features is to spend a lot of money, which is honestly a scam. So, thanks again for this amazing contribution!
I think it's impossible :( Since there is no way (at least that I know) to send any information to the scribble strips when the X-Touch is in MCU mode :(

If I get the ZIP files from your site do I still need MAX (for example) and what happens after the MAX trial ends, will the patch still work or do I need to maintain an active subscription to MAX?
He said you can still use it, but can't save it. So if you want to change or edit it to your liking, after the trial period, you have to pay 10 bux (and after saving cancel your subscription??)

I own a X-Touch One and after watching your video got inspired to try out some techniques you showed us. Honestly, after spending some time exploring all those programs it's becoming not that difficult to make a controller do things that you want in Cubase. That Generic Midi thing helps a lot. But I couldn't find anything like that for Pro Tools. Could you help with that? Do you know how I could learn Midi Values of the Pro Toos 'Buttons'?
Ok, I've just found the solution. I used LoopMIDI for output devices in Pro Tools midi controller section. For the midi monitor I used MIDI-OX. Now I can see SOME information. But not all of it for some reason. For example I can see midi values for stop button, for play button, for the left panning pot but not for the right one. Do you have some experience working with Pro Tools? Or do you know what is the reason for some 'buttons' in Pro Tools not sending midi information out?
First of all, I big thank you for sharing. Im am trying to set this up without the extender. I have managed to edit the PureData patch to get the channel bank to jump 8 steps (great Success) But when it comes to geting the plugin editing to work it gets to complicated. I have no experience in PureData or max so my brain melts when looking at your schematics :-). Is it to much to ask you for PD patch made for only INT X-touch?
Wow killer video! Mind blowing! You think its possible to use the big knoob as an AI knoob? Like the steinberg cc121? For example for the cutoff function of a plugin. And its possible that the fader automatic jump to the channel i have selected in cubase? For example i put a new sample in a new channel (the last one) and the xtouch fader jump automaticly to this channel? This will be awesome . Best regards
Hi Simon! Glad that you liked man! Well. I never used the cc121, but to use the scrub wheel to control something, you just need to change it at the generic remote. It's not as intuitive as just clicking on a parameter and "midi learn":( But it should work. Regarding the option to make the X-Touch jump to the selected channel on Cubase I was able to do that but only using Max (I still didn't have much time to learn how to do it in PD). It works. I'm going to make a video with this later.
Great video. Best thing I saw regarding all the daw control videos of behringer/midas. Do you think we could achieve the same result with an x32 or m32 ?
Thanks man!.. I'm not familiar with x32 or m32 but I think this thing I made works with ANY mackie control device. I tested with the X-Touch and with an iPad App that emulates Mackie control and it worked. People have also tested with QCon Pro and it also worked. If they use the Mackie Control Protocol, I think it will work.

Fala Aurélio. De cara elas não vão funcionar pq o meu setup é feito pra 16 faders.. mas aí é só alterar tudo que é 16 pra 8 que provavelmente vai resolver. Se o X-Touch compact for Mackie Control provavelmente vai funcionar tb.

@@paulogermano6368 O mesmo que você porém eu só tenho a mesa Xtouch sem a extender. Então as partes do plugin aonde o click no Vpot chama o plugin na tela para depois você ajustá-los na extender pra mim teria que ser tudo na xtouch e claro, a questão dos canais 8 ao invés de 16.

Hey man. glad that you liked. Actually all of those issues are due to the Mackie Control protocol and not the x-touch it self. So no matter what Mackie controller I buy, i'll have the same issues. But I'm pretty happy with the X-Touch. :D
Wait. The very first thing you say... I thought that if you pressed the rotary knob "1" down it would open up the plug-in just as if you clicked on the edit button. I just tried that and it works.

When I startup Max8 the Behringer Xtouch and Xtender work but all the other midi controllers don't. If I start up PureData then the Behringers work only the Xtender doesn't show info on the lcd's but all my other midi controllers work like a charm. Does anybody knows how to get them all working in Max8? It's kinda shit that there's no info on the lcd's when I work with PureData. Thanks in advance.
Hello, did you start loop midi first, then PureData, then open cubase and then link the boxes as described ant about 6:10 ? I had the same problem when i draw the lines in puredata before launching cubase. Maybe this is the reason.. :)

This is NOT a limitation of behringer X-TOUCH. It's a limitation of the Mackie Control Protocol. So EVERY mackie control unity you buy, you will have the EXACT same limitations. Be it the real mackie controller, QCon or any other. The only difference between all MCU controllers is the build quality.

Is there a Daw controller that you can recommend that will automatically work with Cubase 10 straight out the box without using some third party software to make it work as it should? I do not have time to rewrite the code to get the controller to work properly.
@@realmusic4you there isn't ! If you want anything more advanced than volume and pan you have to go with something like Nuage as far as I know. But it's way above the price range! :D

I have a question about X-Touch faders behavior while reading automation in Cubase or Logic X. Faders on my unit are very jittery and they're rattling while moving. I replaced X-touch for a new one, and faders are a little bit quieter but still rattling and they're far from being smooth. They're riding like they were doing many tiny steps instead of one smooth ride from point to point. Do you have the same experience?
I noticed that the behavior are different from one DAW to another. Studio One, for example, is the worst. very jittery. I do notice that in Cubase too. :( They are not as smooth as they should be.

@@meuseekproduction Yeah... mine seems like that.... To be honest, I think it's a cubase fault, since studio one is worse. I didn't test it on other software to make a more fair comparison.

Just a quick tip, for those like me who have wondered if it's possible to use Midi CC in Cubase/Nuendo with the X-Touch. There is a way to control 8 midi parameters using the method described in this video (not mine) ruclips.net/video/aRtzyDbYCgU/видео.html It only works in Midi tracks. You place a Midi Insert called Midi Control, assign which CC channels to work with, and then manipulate it like any other insert with the X-Touch: press plug-in button, navigate to second page and if you want press flip to use faders instead of encoders. I just tried and it works! It should make life a lot easier when working with some libraries.

Hi Paolo, In theory I think that you can use 2 extenders. But since the extender doesn't have the Page buttons, you may have to use a 3rd device and create a path in max with something like: "Everytime you click on this particular note on this 3rd device, create a note 46 (or 47) on my Extender 1". If you have an android or iOS Tablet/Phone you can easily create this with TouchOSC
I have a tascam us2400(old yes) I'm having the same issue in cubase . In cubase Instead of banking from 1-24 over to 25-48...it goes from 1-24 then 9-to whatever...
This patch Address that. You'll have to tweak it a bit since My bank size is 16 and not 24, but it should be easily done. You can see in the video that I tweaked it to work as 16 bank size instead of 8
I think you can apply the same concept to studio one, but for sure, this setup won't work in S1 without (hard) modifications to the patch. Unfortunately
I just cant get this to work ! I don't know what im doing wrong the extender does nothing and x-touch only has a few functions its driving me crazy trying to get this to work on windows
I believe I did everything correctly the faders would move the mixer faders but then they would reset to zero after I let go of them and no other function would work
OMG, too much setup work. Why can’t somebody just make a controller that works with each major DAW OOTB? So far, the best I’ve seen for Cubase is Steinberg’s own CC121. Granted, it’s only one channel at a time, but at least you can pretty much control everything.
Don'y think the CC121 controls any third party plugin. Maybe with the AI knob, or whatever it's called. I have Icon Qcon Pro-X & extender. It's works with Mackie Control, Logic Control or HUI. So OOTB it works with most DAW's like any other controller does. This setup just saves some extra button presses (and more) To me it's also a bit overwhelming, but I'm gonna give it a try anyway. You don't need to do all the (hard) work in Max, as you just load the patch. (That's where I am at this moment... On to the next bit!!)

Did it work for you?? I know you mentioned in 1 of your videos your now banking 16 channels at a time?

Hey man.. glad you found the video useful. It was indeed a nice effort to make this whole thing work. :P If you don't use the extender, you have to modify the section where I tell Max (or PD) to repeat the Note 46 or 47... because this is the area where it makes the jump from 16 channels instead of 8. I just need to click and delete this information on the blue square (in Max). Other problem that you may face is that I disabled the knob press button to use this function for opening plugins widows, but if you are trying to use the Cubase EQ, you have to press the knob to activate a particular band and it will not work for you. Since I have the extender, I use my Extender to do the EQs (because it's knobs are not disabled) and use my main unit to open plugins. You will have to choose. (Personaly, I would leave the knobs for the plugin window). Let me know if you have any other question. I'll gladly try to help!

Hey Esteban. I haven't published yet anything about the Autobank workaround because my Max file evolved and it's even more "convoluted" thank this current video. With more features and I still didn't have time to clean it and (maybe) make another video with it. The path I found to make the Autobank is to Add a WK-ID controller to your remote controller options and send it's midi out to any available virtual port you may have. the WK-ID was the only out of ALL others that sent the information about the current selected channel via SysEx. So, every time I click on the channel, the WK-ID remote control will send a sysex Info that has the channel number.. The trick is to, inside max (this patch i made was not for PureData), capture the correct SysEx, convert the bytes to integer (to get the real current channel number) and do a simple math to find out what bank this channel belongs to. After that, I just had to go to the first bank (simulating a "Previous Page" button press several times) and then going forward to the selected bank)... It's a pretty convoluted solution but at least it works..

It sounds convoluted, yes (I'm pretty new to this but i'll give it a shot, best way to learn), but even so it's waaaaay better than not having that functionality. After doing the resarch for which DAW controller to buy, it seems this is quite widespread. Every mackie universal solution has this issue, and only Eucon controllers (in some cases), Steinbergs CC121 and the original faderport 1 have that built in., which is baffling. Seems the only way to have all of this quality-of-life features is to spend a lot of money, which is honestly a scam. So, thanks again for this amazing contribution!

If I get the ZIP files from your site do I still need MAX (for example) and what happens after the MAX trial ends, will the patch still work or do I need to maintain an active subscription to MAX?

I own a X-Touch One and after watching your video got inspired to try out some techniques you showed us. Honestly, after spending some time exploring all those programs it's becoming not that difficult to make a controller do things that you want in Cubase. That Generic Midi thing helps a lot. But I couldn't find anything like that for Pro Tools. Could you help with that? Do you know how I could learn Midi Values of the Pro Toos 'Buttons'?
Ok, I've just found the solution. I used LoopMIDI for output devices in Pro Tools midi controller section. For the midi monitor I used MIDI-OX. Now I can see SOME information. But not all of it for some reason. For example I can see midi values for stop button, for play button, for the left panning pot but not for the right one. Do you have some experience working with Pro Tools? Or do you know what is the reason for some 'buttons' in Pro Tools not sending midi information out?

First of all, I big thank you for sharing. Im am trying to set this up without the extender. I have managed to edit the PureData patch to get the channel bank to jump 8 steps (great Success) But when it comes to geting the plugin editing to work it gets to complicated. I have no experience in PureData or max so my brain melts when looking at your schematics :-). Is it to much to ask you for PD patch made for only INT X-touch?

Hi Simon! Glad that you liked man! Well. I never used the cc121, but to use the scrub wheel to control something, you just need to change it at the generic remote. It's not as intuitive as just clicking on a parameter and "midi learn":( But it should work. Regarding the option to make the X-Touch jump to the selected channel on Cubase I was able to do that but only using Max (I still didn't have much time to learn how to do it in PD). It works. I'm going to make a video with this later.

Thanks man!.. I'm not familiar with x32 or m32 but I think this thing I made works with ANY mackie control device. I tested with the X-Touch and with an iPad App that emulates Mackie control and it worked. People have also tested with QCon Pro and it also worked. If they use the Mackie Control Protocol, I think it will work.

Fala Aurélio. De cara elas não vão funcionar pq o meu setup é feito pra 16 faders.. mas aí é só alterar tudo que é 16 pra 8 que provavelmente vai resolver. Se o X-Touch compact for Mackie Control provavelmente vai funcionar tb.

Hey man. glad that you liked. Actually all of those issues are due to the Mackie Control protocol and not the x-touch it self. So no matter what Mackie controller I buy, i'll have the same issues. But I'm pretty happy with the X-Touch. :D

When I startup Max8 the Behringer Xtouch and Xtender work but all the other midi controllers don't. If I start up PureData then the Behringers work only the Xtender doesn't show info on the lcd's but all my other midi controllers work like a charm. Does anybody knows how to get them all working in Max8? It's kinda shit that there's no info on the lcd's when I work with PureData.

did you start loop midi first, then PureData, then open cubase and then link the boxes as described ant about 6:10 ? I had the same problem when i draw the lines in puredata before launching cubase.

Hey man! At the generic remote setup you have to change the Flag from "Push Button" to "Toggle" for each insert. It should solve your problem.

This is NOT a limitation of behringer X-TOUCH. It's a limitation of the Mackie Control Protocol. So EVERY mackie control unity you buy, you will have the EXACT same limitations. Be it the real mackie controller, QCon or any other. The only difference between all MCU controllers is the build quality.

I do not have time to rewrite the code to get the controller to work properly.
@@realmusic4you there isn't ! If you want anything more advanced than volume and pan you have to go with something like Nuage as far as I know. But it's way above the price range! :D

I have a question about X-Touch faders behavior while reading automation in Cubase or Logic X. Faders on my unit are very jittery and they're rattling while moving. I replaced X-touch for a new one, and faders are a little bit quieter but still rattling and they're far from being smooth. They're riding like they were doing many tiny steps instead of one smooth ride from point to point. Do you have the same experience?
I noticed that the behavior are different from one DAW to another. Studio One, for example, is the worst. very jittery. I do notice that in Cubase too. :( They are not as smooth as they should be.

Just a quick tip, for those like me who have wondered if it's possible to use Midi CC in Cubase/Nuendo with the X-Touch. There is a way to control 8 midi parameters using the method described in this video (not mine) ruclips.net/video/aRtzyDbYCgU/видео.html
It only works in Midi tracks. You place a Midi Insert called Midi Control, assign which CC channels to work with, and then manipulate it like any other insert with the X-Touch: press plug-in button, navigate to second page and if you want press flip to use faders instead of encoders. I just tried and it works! It should make life a lot easier when working with some libraries.

Hi Paolo, In theory I think that you can use 2 extenders. But since the extender doesn't have the Page buttons, you may have to use a 3rd device and create a path in max with something like: "Everytime you click on this particular note on this 3rd device, create a note 46 (or 47) on my Extender 1". If you have an android or iOS Tablet/Phone you can easily create this with TouchOSC

This is not a problem with the firmware. It’s how cubase implements the MCU protocol. Only steinberg can change that

I have a tascam us2400(old yes) I'm having the same issue in cubase . In cubase Instead of banking from 1-24 over to 25-48...it goes from 1-24 then 9-to whatever...

This patch Address that. You'll have to tweak it a bit since My bank size is 16 and not 24, but it should be easily done. You can see in the video that I tweaked it to work as 16 bank size instead of 8

Did you properly setup the Virtual Ports and the routing inside Max/PD ? It's the only think I can think of.. :/
I believe I did everything correctly the faders would move the mixer faders but then they would reset to zero after I let go of them and no other function would work

OMG, too much setup work. Why can’t somebody just make a controller that works with each major DAW OOTB? So far, the best I’ve seen for Cubase is Steinberg’s own CC121. Granted, it’s only one channel at a time, but at least you can pretty much control everything.
Don'y think the CC121 controls any third party plugin. Maybe with the AI knob, or whatever it's called.
I have Icon Qcon Pro-X & extender. It's works with Mackie Control, Logic Control or HUI. So OOTB it works with most DAW's like any other controller does.
This setup just saves some extra button presses (and more)
To me it's also a bit overwhelming, but I'm gonna give it a try anyway. You don't need to do all the (hard) work in Max, as you just load the patch. (That's where I am at this moment... On to the next bit!!)
