This is the correct way to teach people how to play spelunky. Drop them in ass first and force them to figure it out themselves. No videos, no external tutorials, just pain and suffering as you brute force the knowledge into your brain. Also shout out void for getting the furthest! He really was getting the hang of it by the end!

Spelunky once got me an A+ on a final. My teacher was a gamer, so he said if you could beat him, he'd give 110% on any assignment. And he was good, he'd won smash tournaments before. So I challenged him to a game of Spelunky, highest level wins. He was so sure himself he told me he didn't need a tutorial. He lasted 10 seconds.
Gamer teacher sounds awesome. I had a teacher in high school that wasn't really a gamer, at least not in the strictest sense, but he was really into tech stuff (in fact, that was what he taught mainly)
yeah i'd believe that. in high school my chem teacher told one of the lowest graded students in the class (like 50something% in the class) that if he beat him in chess 2/3 he'd give him a grade high enough to let him pass, and sure shit enough

I played the free version of Spelunky a lot! It was fun, even if I only ever beat it, like, once in my life. I never picked up the Steam version because it looked like pretty much the same game, only without the fun pixel graphics and a lot of new stuff that mostly just makes the game harder. Then I got Spelunky 2. Which was so ridiculously, brutally difficult that it completely crushed my feeling of self-worth and left me a depressive mess everytime I played, until I just uninstalled it. I never, ever want to go back.
Spelunky 2 is legitimately one of my favorite games of all time, if you ever reinstall it, just take some time learning and goofing off instead of trying to beat it. Sometimes dumb shit will happen and you can only move on. But if you don’t ever want to touch it again I get it

The thing that convinced me that I was never going to have fun with it was that I was playing multiplayer, a bit of co-op and then a bit of the competitive battle mode, and even THAT made me feel miserable. It was the least serious most goof-off-y way to play it and it was still awful for me.

I was able to get to the jungle or other areas past the mines often in Spelunky 1 but when I streamed 2 feeling decently confident it was half an hour of failure to get past the first two levels, this game feeds on overconfidence
I've played so much of the original freeware Spelunky an eternity ago, and recently put 50-ish hours into Spelunky 2 on PS5 So much death, but so much fun
Spelunky and spelunking 2 are easy and fun games. I still play spelunky 2 and it never gets boring. It’s fun watching new players struggle as they learn through every death. I wanna see a dedicated video of you guys playing spelunky 2 and try to at the very least beat Tiamat.
