Having lyrical beefs with other rappers isn't holding anyone back. Using your pull to blackball other artist from live shows or radio show, shelving their albums, or timing the releases of albums to conflict/compete with bigger artist who's shadow would deny the target plays is holding someone back.
Examples: New York Hip-Hop to 50, The Source and Murder Inc., when they went out of their way to sabotage Obie Trice, 50, Eminem, D12, and any act associated with Shady/Aftermath. Then there is Diddy. From 112 to Ma$e, that man stay holding the talent back. Jay-z to Nas (admittedly, the Jury is still out on that one.)

I remember going to Rock the bells festival back in 2008 in Boston. I was 20 back then. Was so hyped to see all the rappers I grew up listening to back in Russia since I was 13-14… De La Soul, Pharcyde, B-Real, Wu-Tang, the Roots, A Tribe Called Quest as a headliner… and Nas. Oh boy, I still remember how Nas appearance was so different from others. He was in tight jeans, pollo shirt, like pretty boy from a good family straight out of nice university, compare to all others who looked like street legends. Jay Z reminds me that Nas back then compare to Eminem and 50 cent who are real dudes

He even produces beats for lot of the other artists that he loves and respects FOR FREE and when he does features for other artists he doesn't charge. The song "Renagade" that he featured on for Jay-Z was originally supposed to be for him and Royce but Royce couldn't do it so he gave it to Jay for free. It already had his and Royce verses so all Jay had to do was take out Royce verse for his and Em pretty much kept his verse the same with maybe a few minor changes to it and produced the whole thing. Imagine how much more he would be worth if he hadn't done those things without charging others.. He didn't make a dime when he produced Slaughterhouse album and that's with putting in his own money into investing them.
