I’m not the best actor or singer but anytime I put my all into a song I try my best to get into the headspace of who was singing it. Be it a real person or a character. I suppose that Caleb is really channeling the character of Spinel. There have been times where I’ve damn near made myself cry while channeling a character. Putting yourself in that headspace and making yourself feel those feelings can really take it out of you. Poor guy probably had to lie down for a good half hour after singing

It's so much more sad when you realise that she was literally made to be pink diamond's friend. It was her whole reason for being 'born'. Then all of a sudden, she realises, after years of fulfilling her purpose, that Pink didn't want her anymore. The only thing she's ever known has been taken from her. She's wondering why. Did she do something, say something? Was she not good enough? Then she discovers that, while she was waiting for her only friend, her reason for existence, she has forgotten her and made new friends. This reminds me so much abandoned pets, especially dogs. People impulse buy them, then they get bored of them or can’t handle their energy and needs. So they just discard them off at a park or the middle of nowhere. And since the pets don’t know any better, they wait for their owners to come back for them.

Does anyone else feel like Caleb changing his pronunciation of ‘drift’ at the end actually has a strong impact? I get caught up listening to the “drift” with the ‘ee’ sound, then when he says it with ‘ih’ at the end it hits differently.
He's using Broadway vowels! They're used to give a tone that matches the character singing; "ee" gives a brighter, happier sound, while "i" gives a darker, moodier one. Notice how on the final 3 "drift"s he's transitioning from "ee" to "i" to give a darker sound, mirroring the transformation from "old" spinel to "dark" spinel.
