You can actually change the DEFAULT FOLDER ICON Wich changes all the folder icons, as soon as you restart by adding a edit in the registry. (Enter win+r regedit and the search the internet for where exactly you find the default icons)
I'm pretty sure this feature was in Windows since win95 or something. Definitely not a Windows 10 feature.
Haha, yeah. Ive found about it back in win98. Still, it is something that is so unexplored by many users that it is fine for him to teach how to change, as long as people know this function existed way back.

my problem is that none of the images I find on youtube can be saved as icon. Nearly all of them can only be saved as NPG

Just ran into a problem where this simply doesn't work. Win10 doesn't say why, everything behaves normally, but when you press ok or apply it doesn't get applied and when you bring up properties again, it's on the default icon. And apparently this is frequent too... wtf.
I know how to change folder icons individually. How would you do all related folder types at the same time rather than one by one? Something I've been trying to figure out for a while now. Would really be nice to create a new folder and have it automatically apply the folder icon I have set to that particular folder type.
There is a program that will change ALL the folder icons, as long as you have folder.jpg in the folder you want to change. I use it mainly for my music, it nice to artwork of the record for the icon.

Hi, Please help me When I right-click on the folder Which I want to change the icon I click Properties then customize then change the icon then browse I saved my icon in my Download's Folder then when I scroll the picture is not there. 😭😭😭
I followed this but as soon as I use the folder with the new icon, it reverts back to the old icon. Edit: I figured it out I think. As soon as the icon to be used (that you've just downloaded) is moved from its original location, it won't be set as the new folder icon on your desktop. It has to be kept in the same location as when you first set the new icon. This ensures the new icon remains on the desktop. As soon as you move the icon to a new place, that icon will revert to default. Simply move the downloaded icon you want to a permanent place, then repeat the steps to change the icon to the new icon in the menus for the desktop. It should stay.

This works but when I put away the image that I used as an Icon into a folder all the icons disappear
it probably still tries to get the icon from the place on your hard drive /ssd that it was on before, try setting the icons while the icon file itself is already where it's supposed to be
Hello I used to change my icons in that way. And a week ago, the icons changed to the normal yellow folder, and now I try to change it and it doesn't let me do it. Do you know what could the problem be. Thanks for your help
So, I just recently made the jump from Windows 7 to 10 after spending about 3 or 4 years on a Mac. My Windows 7 I had customized to the hilt with Icons and other random customization's. When I made the jump back to PC, I found that a LOT of things have changed, yet stayed the same. When I started looking for ways to change the icon, I quickly discovered that it was a bit more complex than I remembered but I managed to find out how to find the place to change the icons. Not wanting to mess up my computer, I decided to do some digging and found a BUNCH of videos and forums detailing how to change the icons using 3rd party software/apps. Not what I wanted. Not really into things that lace themselves deeply into my hardware. Then I found this video that basically confirmed what I already kind of knew AND you showed me a much easier way to access said files! (Windows 10 changed a step or two) In short, thank you for helping confirm what I already knew. And to those looking to change their icons, this is pretty much the only way I would go unless you can %100 trust the app you're using. You've got two thumbs up from me bro! Also, one of the funniest tutorials I've ever seen! And trust me, I've logged probably hundreds of hours on "How to's". If you could do a tutorial on how to change the Recycle Bin icon... that would be awesome!

@@RedFenceAnime There was a way to do it all the way back in Win95 but you had to use a program to do it or it would be unstable. I beta tested the program that changed the folder icons. It took like 10 years to change Windows to do it without hacks. I still have a bunch of 32x32 folder icons I used back then 25 years later.

you dont need a .ico image, you can choose every image you want and then convert it to a .ico image in a website

Try Album.Art.Folder.Icon or another program that changes the icon of the folder.
when u do this for porn folder, it is a simple spell but quite unbreakable
sometimes the icon changes but not to what I wanted like it shows a empty folder instead for no reason
When I refresh my desktop, it gets converted back to a normal folder for some reason.

Easy for you but the "customize" tab is not on mine. I have no option at all to change icons. Good old Windows 10 and Microsoft.

I know how to change the default Windows folder icons, the problem is that Windows doesn't save them for very long. I converted many music album covers, JPEG files, to ICO format and cropped them to to the default 256px X 256px size for Windows folders. However, Windows doesn't save the new icons and always end up reverting to the manila yellow, default Windows folders icons.
Yeah also, if you move the ico file somewhere else icon disappears.
Okay, so I did this, and it changed my icon. Yay! But it will only do it to one folder. If I move onto the next folder, it won't change. Do you know why?

I love that I can change my icons to be custom made ones. I've spent literal hours trying to make images that actually pop out and work well with my workflow, but a huge problem for me is that the icon inevitably disappear and I have to reset all of the icons one by one. Does anyone know why this happens and how to fix it? This morning I changed them all back, changed the folder name of one of the folders and they all disappeared again...
same here, it changed for 2 seconds then reverted. It shows in properties the new icon but the desktop shows the original folder icon.... :(🤥
@@thomaskish8392 I haven't had this issue since around that time 2 years ago. I haven't experienced since and have no idea why it did that.
I got a new PC but I still use the old laptop this happened on and use it occasionally. I wiped it clean (total reset) about a year ago. That may have had a factor in fixing it? but I'm not sure. I cant remember if I was still having issues at that time or if it had fixed itself beforehand.

1 i find icon 2 right click 3 save image as... 4 im fu*ked up cuz i have only PNG image and all files/pliks ( i dunno how translate corectly ,,Wszystkie pliki") and if i delete .PNG and write .ico it doesnt work :c Can you help me?
never mind, you must export .ico from gimp and it must be in 512x512 256x256 or 128x128 sory my bad :)

Yes. there is a program to do that, "Album.Art.Folder.Icon" should do what you want. That if you haven't found something better. It's been around for like 7 years.

Guys, If you look up convert my picture to a .IOC you can put any picture in and convert it not just the ones on Google.

i used to do it by adding the icon inside the folder and then setting a path for the icon which would be general, no matter where you take that folder, but now cant just recall it

I have a music library of songs I have downloaded in they are in separate folders, along with a picture of the actual album cover the the song would have came from. I can change the folder icon to a pic of an album cover ( example - KISS Greatest Hits ) After doing this.....the next day or two, the folder with show 2 items instead of what I chose....windows evidently is changing it. Is there something i can do to stop it ?

I use my own pics turned into ico format and an autorun document. I even changed the C-drive icon. But for some reason, it's not working on docs, pics, downloads, etc.
