Tais toi is the polite version.
Tais toi or taisez-vous is literally the formal “be quiet”... which is not necessarily what you’d say colloquially or if you’re mad, you gotta admit. There’s many variations from shut up! ( ferme la!) to shut the front door, quit yapping, stuff it, shut the hell/eff up, hold your tongue, pipe down, silence, zip it... to hush (chut!) - right? We have many variations as well, and the fave one is usually ta yeule, which is actually joual (slang) for ferme ta gueule (shut your animal mouth). 🤔🤫🤭
