      You're not kidding about the relevance of these movies today. The 2 things you have to consider is, back then we were lucky to have a Clint Eastwood or a Charles Bronson as well as movie producer's willing to create these classics. Lastly, look at the landscape of Hollywood today. Who the hell is willing to do something like this genre today? #GoodLuck

      Old Guy:... So which was best in your opinion then? And why?

    • @oldguy9051
      @oldguy9051 3 года назад +5

      @@michaelrawson6261 Personally, I like the first the best because it has the best direction (gotta love Don Siegel) and is the most iconic, especially visually (even the movie poster is iconic).
      It also has the best antagonist - a great Andy Robinson who gives the perfect psycho. But Harry isn't simply the hero here: he's the antihero fighting fire with more fire. He tortures the psycho when he deems it necessary and he comes upon him like a force of nature. Seldomly was a "cool cop" this cool. It's off the charts when he stands on the bridge.
      The "fun bits" are more cynical compared to the next two (the joke about his partners getting whacked, the hotdog chewing, the jumper).
      Also, this film is still totally serious in its conflict depiction (mostly Harry against the rights of the criminals) and the ending with Harry throwing his badge away isn't something you see very often. This movie is more of a balance act than any of the sequels.
      While you didn't ask for it, I will have a few words for each sequel - so that one can see why I appreciate the first so much.
      The next two films are "more of the same sequels": More corpses, both nastier and funnier in parts, some chase scenes - in other words: Good entertainment.
      Magnum Force has two standout features: a) The relativism of Harry Callahan thanks to the even worse vigilante cops, who even murder other cops (I can't name an earlier film that was this drastic in this plot variant) and b) the gun fetishism.
      Ironically, Harry doesn't use his Magnum on the vigilants but other means.
      The Enforcer brings Tyne Daly into the mix but she of course represents the modern times - which are well meaning but basically suck b/c they aren't experienced like the "old guys on the street". The antagonists are pseudo terrorists, have no character development and are entirely replaceable. The rocket climax was ridiculous and a bad omen for the series.
      Sudden Impact, thankfully, takes a step back and is a smaller film -- perhaps because of a smaller budget (also Eastwood directed it, known for not overstepping). Using Sondra Locke as the avenger is basically nepotism and not the first time either but the movie suffers a bit from it this time as Locke appears too fragile.
      It has some funny bits, too, especially the chase sequence with the pensioner bus.
      The antagonists are totally bland, though, and get deserved grisly deaths for it. Still, the Harry Callahan character was basically back in shape - and he gets a short-lived gun upgrade: The Auto-Mag.
      I saw The Dead Pool in the cinema back then and I was massively disappointed: this was basically TV material!
      The premise is totally bonkers and at first I thought it was meant as a satire. Perhaps even a British one, with Liam Neeson, no less.
      Stuntman Buddy Van Horn directed it (really?...) and it is parts downright bizarre (Jim Carrey, the r/c car, the harpoon).
      This here says it all: I can't, for the life of it, remember who the perp was. All I remember is the harpoon scene...
      My ranking is this: 1, 4, 2, 3, 5
      The Die Hard sequels rank even worse, though: 1, 3, 2, 4, 5
      And, no, I don't rank the first movie automatically better. In my opinion Predator 2 is easily as good as the first one. They are both terrific.

    • @Plainview-tu7xn
      @Plainview-tu7xn 2 года назад +4

      @@oldguy9051
      Predator 2 is nowhere near as good as the first one
      -The characters aren't as good
      -The direction isn't as good
      -Glover beating a Predator is laughable
      The original is a 9 and 2 is a 6.5 or so.

    • @oldguy9051
      @oldguy9051 2 года назад

      @@Plainview-tu7xn The first Predator is a classic but not a movie w/o faults.
      The characters are all ridiculous and it gets sillier by the minute ("no time to bleed" etc.). In the end it's a Schwarzenegger vehicle after all the "big guys" get dispatched way too easily by the predator.
      The cinema laughed when the muddy Schwarzenegger rolled his eyes (and I'm not even complaining about his voice as the movie was dubbed).
      If you need numbers: I'd rank it about 7.5 - which is actually high (b/c of sheer entertainment value - McTiernan was the best action director at the time), but nowhere near perfection.
      The second one had characters that are about as cartoony as in the first, the jungle is now a city jungle (with a bit more variety) and the half-hour long showdown (like in 1) isn't half as unrealistic as in the first movie (with Dutch surviving the blast in the chopper - yeah...) but still has more action, even though Glover isn't such a physical actor.
      I rank it at 7.7 because:
      - To me the showdown was more tense - and it had a better finale with an UFO and a bit of lore inside in the end. The first ended way too quickly.
      - Glover is entirely believable as a fed-up cop. He is ten times the better actor - and the supporting cast is also better (even though most of them are also cannon fodder).
      - It actually feels like a war movie in the beginning (a gang war, but still)
      - Gary Busey and his clown company gets whacked
      - tits
      But the good thing is: Everybody is entitled to his own opinion. ;-)

    • @Plainview-tu7xn
      @Plainview-tu7xn 2 года назад +1

      @@oldguy9051
      @Old Guy
      These movies are not about who the better actor is... And to be honest,Glover didn't have much range either.
      The original movie did have some comedic elements, but it's designed to be a macho bravado type of thing.
      Yes, 2 tries to play it totally straight, but the Jamaican drug lord thing that was going on was just too silly. They did this in Robocop.2 also.
      Glover would have been fine with LW drama, but this makes no sense... How can one believe that some old big city grandpa can beat a Predator than went through a team of assassin types? It doesn't make sense.
      Your anecdotal story about how supposedly everyone laughed at Predator doesn't change the fact that Predator is way more highly regarded.... A top notch horror/action... While Predator 2 is just an ok crime drama with Predator thrown in.
      But, yes... Different opinions.

    The Dead Pool... Best Dirty Harry movie! Great scene and was a nice change of pace seeing Harry have to deal with murder mystery in the film industry. The slasher movie undertones were likely influenced by the Stallone action movie Cobra, which released a few years before - though that was a full blown genre crossover between action and horror.... Sudden Impact also delved into that realm with the thriller - psycho-horror scenario.

  • @michaellebellot8091
    @michaellebellot8091 6 лет назад +6

    In another Dirty Harry movie he was being questioned by a panel of nerds on his tactics in dealing with criminals to which he replied.. "if I and other cops like me aren't out there doing the job, who's gonna do it......you?"
    I remember when a cop was someone you saw and respected, one who commanded respect. Now, thanks to changes such as were being demonstrated in this clip, many cops out there are a joke to look at, many who couldn't jump a fence to save their lives, short, overweight, a danger to themselves and those who have to work with them.

    If I was Gennaro, I'd be scurrying back to the comparative safety of my cell, too! Especially given the fact that this guy, Butcher Hicks, looks to be the strongest, meanest, and most sadistic, monster in that Prison... and especially since Lt. Callahan just gave Butcher Hicks some false information! Gennaro-You'd do best to go along with the program, dude. If ya don't, why Ol' Butcher might just come down there, and rip you apart, limb from limb-with his teeth!!!
