Opera Singer Reacts: Operation Market Garden (Medal of Honor: Frontline)

  • Operation Market Garden from Medal of Honor: Frontline was surprisingly composed by Michael Giacchino - who went on to win Oscars for many of his compositions for film. Pretty cool stuff. I think in the case of Medal of Honor the music really serves the story so beautifully here. Real life events are precarious subjects at times because they need to be handled with the upmost respect, in my opinion. Especially when we look at something like WW2.

It's videos like these that remind me how much I miss WW2 Medal of Honor games, Frontline and European Assault took hours of my life as a kid since my uncle got me into it on the PS1 with Undeground.

It was said, and I'm more or less quoting, we are a generation so dramatically nostalgic for a war we would never have been a part of. And I don't think it was the games that did it, they merely capitalized off it. Was truly an odd, wonderful time.

Since you’ve done this track, then you should give the companion track “Arnhem” a listen (same game and composer) as it is a specific battle/place of Operation Market Garden. It has such beautiful, yet somber and haunting vocals and I think you’ll enjoy it. Whenever I think of operation market garden itself this is the song that I’ll always associate it with and remember.

I wholeheartedly agree. "Arnhem" is a wonderful yet sad piece that perfectly fits the level as well as the actual history of the Battle for Arnhem. The first time I heard it, it felt wrong to hear when playing the good guys, like something was going horribly wrong and you and your allies could do nothing to fix it. When I dove deep into WW2 history and replayed it, I understood, the brave British and Polish paras were truly a bridge too far IRL and Patterson (the player character) could do nothing to turn the outcome in game to the point completing the level didn't feel like a victory, all you could do was escape to complete your mission.

Ah yes, Medal of Honor. I practically grew up with this series during the PS2 era. Frontline has a very special place in my heart, it was one of the first FPS games I felt invested in playing. And the soundtracks and overall atmosphere of the game evoke a strong feeling in my child self, that I didn't know I could feel, when I was playing. It's so great to see somebody react to this and breaks it down.

In context of the game itself, this track is used as the main theme track when you first load the game up and navigate its menus. So that hopeful tone fits really well for that very first time you put the game on (and then start right off with the D-Day beach landings, what a way to kneecap the player right after setting them up).
If you want to look at one of the pieces used during one of the levels set during Market Garden, I recommend listening to "Arnhem". It's personally my favourite track from the game, and you could say is the companion piece to "Operation Market Garden".

My personal favourite is “Arnhem Knights.” The piece perfectly describes how daunting the paratroopers mission was and the raw power behind the voice shows the immense strength they must have had to carry on, it’s a fantastic listen and one I feel you’d very much enjoy

This game's entire soundtrack is almost flawless. So many great songs that each convey their own feelings based on the mission they're played in.
I feel like this was the peak of the game with the hopefulness of Market Garden, followed by the gradual realization that everyone's cut off from friendly forces and the operation won't be a success. However, the individual victories are still there and possible but at a great cost of life.

5:50 the section of music you described as pain and fear i had always attributed to the occupied civilian population. this was the first medal of honor game where we actually saw civilians in a war zone rather than just fighting through deserted towns like we had in the original Medal of Honor or Allied Assault. I cant put my finger on it but the music just smacks me as the theme of the oppressed innocents.

Oh man, you just reminded me of the Crysis 2 OST. Hans Zimmer did this wild collab with the game's composers to make this heroic, otherworldly, sharp, metallic sounding sound scape that haunted me for years after playing. Fast forward, and i'm sitting in Dune (2021) and I hear the same Zimmer elements in his music and my headspace is completely pulled back in time, lol. It was a wild theater watching.

The hopeful tone of the child soprano but with the harsh drums really hammer in the hope of the mission with the foreboding knowledge of us in hindsight knowing it failed. Those harsh slams on the drums are also meant to symbolize artillery striking.

These soundtracks make me cry often, the nostalgia and memories of my old home. Having one hour of playtime per day, me as a 7 year old playing this on the PS2 not knowing how to read the objectives, my older brother guiding me through half of the game until it got too difficult for me with him then continuing until the end while I watch. I was thinking of suggesting this game, but didn't think it would happen before I could! Thank you, this made me happy.
If I were to throw in suggestions from this game they would be 'Arnhem Knights' aka 'Arnhem' and 'After The Drop', both equally making me tear up as much as the main theme you just listened to. An honorable mention goes to the main theme of MoH European Assault by Christopher Lennertz, really makes me feel like it could play in an HBO series or movie.

Personally, I can't suggest the song Rain from Halo 3 ODST enough, as it sets the game's mood like nothing else can. The dark, rainy night in a ruined and alien occupied city where neon lights, broken screens, burning wreckage and enemy patrols are the only lights, as you, a normal human soldier, tries to find out what happened to your squad after you were knocked unconscious. What better way to sell that sad, mysterious mood than with a piano, some strings and a saxophone?

My dad flew paratroopers into Holland during Operation Market Garden. He was shot down behind enemy lines near Grave, Holland, where he was picked up by the Dutch Underground minutes before German officers flooded the area looking for the downed airman. After many days, and some unusual adventures, he finally made it back to friendly territory. He remembers being in ditches and watching German boots passing by his head so close that he could have reached out and touched them. And being greeted by an entire village complete with brass band at one safe barn because they believed they were being liberated. Of running between a Panzer and Sherman tank battle because that was the only flat land the jeep he was in could navigate. He never had anything good to say about how Market Garden was handled, but he could never say enough good things about the many Dutch people who risked their lives so one lone American airman could live.

Cod World at War had some bangers in it's OST specifically Black Cats, Heart of the Reich and Blood and Iron.

Yeah Medal of Honor had some really good themse, though there's also some of the older CoDs with good music. I feel chills whenever I hear the Mamaev Kurgan theme, or the "Not one step back" orchestral piece in the soviet campaign in CoD: Finest Hour.
However, it needs to be said, CoD: World at War is filled to the brim, with absolute bangers, they went all out with that game's soundtrack and I cannot recommend that game's OST enough in terms of FPSs
Oh, also, in terms of WW2 game OSTs, its not an FPS but I very highly recommend the main theme for Company of Heroes 2, its got a lot of emotional weight to it.

Maybe, but Giachino's work with Medal of Honor franchise is incomparable with anything in regards to other fps games. He has no rival in that regard really.I consider his work here as literally ww2 theme song.

Ahem...sorry, last comment was on my phone. In human-readable language, I wanted to recommend the following tracks from Medal of Honor: Frontline. Arnhem Knights, Needle in a Haystack, and Operation: Market Garden are beautiful, soaring pieces. Sturmgeist's Armored Train is harrowing and might make your hair stand on end. Lastly, consider Ace Combat 7: Faceless Soldier. You might want a lyric video of that one depending on how good your Latin is ;)
Also, how about Castlevania: Symphony of the Night? Aside from being an incredibly good game, the title should hint that the music is incredible. It's hard to recommend a specific one but the majority of the tracks are excellent and done in wildly varying styles. Festival of Servants had some scary vocals, I think.

Though I don't hear Medal of Honor's theme often, it is among gaming's most iconic motifs. That said, you had to have heard Halo's music before, right? FPSs have always had good music. :P

Just reminded me of, in my opinion, one of the best FPS series for PS3 (I'd say Killzone tops it for me though) which generally had really nice period correct sounding music for the era it was set in, the series being Resistance, particularly Resistance 2, which has about a 3hr Soundtrack, but if you want a taster on the vibe that it has you can listen to Main Menu themes 1,2,3 and 4 which are about a Minute, minute and a half tops each. Sadly it's one of those series that never saw the limelight of a remaster despite its incredibly well done premise.

If you wanna hear another ww2 video game soundtrack from Michael Giacchino but a lot more heroic and epic, I recommend the Main theme from Secret Weapons over Normandy. A game that Lucasarts made a long time ago for the ps2,Xbox and PC. Sounds like John Williams basically!

I don't know if this will get a reply but this game...was a big part of my childhood. I was a teenager when it came out. The only games by that time that really brought out serious emotion were of course rpgs. But this...this was something different. Up to this point i had played things like Command and Conquer, games like Duke Nukem and Doom. So my experience with military like or shooters was there. But Medal of Honor Frontline is an experience no shooter or military based game has ever truly replicated the feelings i had while playing it. I was ready for action sure but that D-Day level told me right off the bat as i watched soldiers die in droves that this game was going to be far different from anything i ever played. And it was.
I from then on, read every briefing, listened to what every soldier or civilian said and listened to the music the best i could. And when i got to Arnhem...I was able even as a teen to figure out how bleak what i was entering was. Sure the briefing gave a bit of the information but the music and what i saw in the level hammered it home. It was such a powerful experience. I actually teared up during the mission my first time playing it and the lines you hear...did not help matters. No game has ever replicated what i felt playing that mission to it's completion and i don't think any game ever will. As far as i am concerned Medal of Honor Frontline had the best soundtrack of any historic military or military shooter(in general) ever. I don't think ill ever change my mind.
Just wanted to post this. This game is quite special to me and i thank you for your time as well for the fact you covered this. If you get the chance (if you haven't already), please listen to Arnhem Knights. If you can react to it in a video, wonderful, if not enjoy the listen. If you already have, I hope you enjoyed how powerful it is.

Well, are we onto the fps OSTs and songs era on the channel!? If yes, then perfect. COD WAW or COD in general have amazing intense songs, specifically cod world at war and black ops. Some other titles too, like Battlefield have it's moments. But this is my personal views, I'm sure the comments can point more songs/OSTs.
