I'm Asian and I've always found Family Guy funny...cuz they take swings at every community. Gay, straight, black, white, Latinos, Americans, Chinese...no one's safe. That's what makes it so good.
Doubt it, just because this guy isn't offended doesn't mean other Asian people will not get offended as well. There's no hope for humanity if they keep making racist shit about other race and expects it to be all cool. Racism is more than jokes. Being able to "laugh at yourself" doesn't protect you from a racist hanging you from a tree, or shooting you. Yes, jokes like this I think should be fine, it's INTENDED to be offensive in a satirical manner, a way that makes us laugh BECAUSE it's taboo and wrong for somebody to think these things legitimately. But it is so far away from "racism ends when we all can laugh at our self", violently aggressive racists don't attack people because the person in question "can't take a joke", it's because they hold legitimately bigoted and hateful attitudes toward people based anecdotal information that becomes generalized in their minds or even completely misinformed information that similarly becomes generalized. These people are like this in part because of how they are incapable of understanding that the actions of a few don't define the whole. I'm just...anyway, I'm kind of rambling. My point is, being able to laugh at ourselves will improve things, that is a fact, but it certainly isn't the end all cure that we're looking for either. Sometimes I feel like in the effort to prevent overly zealous people from defining everything as racist people will then lean so far to the other side that they forget that legitimately really bad racist shit happens fairly frequently all around the world done by all kinds of people to all kinds of people. This isn't a balancing game. Racism exists, and it's not just jokes like this, so stamping it out requires a hell of a lot more than just growing a thick skin.

Racism is more than jokes. Being able to "laugh at yourself" doesn't protect you from a racist hanging you from a tree, or shooting you. Yes, jokes like this I think should be fine, it's INTENDED to be offensive in a satirical manner, a way that makes us laugh BECAUSE it's taboo and wrong for somebody to think these things legitimately. But it is so far away from "racism ends when we all can laugh at our self", violently aggressive racists don't attack people because the person in question "can't take a joke", it's because they hold legitimately bigoted and hateful attitudes toward people based anecdotal information that becomes generalized in their minds or even completely misinformed information that similarly becomes generalized. These people are like this in part because of how they are incapable of understanding that the actions of a few don't define the whole.
I'm just...anyway, I'm kind of rambling. My point is, being able to laugh at ourselves will improve things, that is a fact, but it certainly isn't the end all cure that we're looking for either. Sometimes I feel like in the effort to prevent overly zealous people from defining everything as racist people will then lean so far to the other side that they forget that legitimately really bad racist shit happens fairly frequently all around the world done by all kinds of people to all kinds of people.
This isn't a balancing game. Racism exists, and it's not just jokes like this, so stamping it out requires a hell of a lot more than just growing a thick skin.
