I caught one of these with my ex and her kids in the gulf. It puffed up but we never took it out of the water and held it for a while until it deflated and swam away. We taught our kids, if you're lucky enough to get to interact with nature, you show caring and respect.

I used to fish those puffers when I had vacation on beaches, and an older kid told me if those puffers expand while out of water, they're guaranteed dead. I buried them in the sand for being guilty and it's a lesson to learn.

And i put them in a bucket of saltwater, and they lived. Once they realize there is no danger, they quickly deflate to swim back to safety.
