  • In this installment of the On30 Goldfield & Calico project, I repurpose and reinstall a large section of backdrop from the old Thunder Mesa layout. After cutting it down to size, the backdrop is securely mounted on the new layout and then some portions are repainted to match the new scenes. There's a little, carpentry, a little ingenuity, and a little backdrop painting in this video!
    Thanks for watching, amigos!

In the opening shots, the backdrop makes the scenes look completely believable! Makes me wish I was O Scale and not part of the real world.

Watching you make that first Long cut, free-hand with the circular saw gave me the Willies. If I had a straight edge, and a roll of painters' tape, I never could have done that. Your Art Work has a certain style. I've noticed how yours, Jason Jenson and mine all vary in our own way. Thanks for the Video.

This is absolutely amazing. Backdrop painting is an art form beyond just landscape painting, in my humble opinion. I've been modeling for 7 years now and I could never even dream of painting something as beautiful as this. Wonderful work Dave, looking forward to more!

Dear Dave, compliments for the accuracy of your freehand cuts. Especially with the way the masonite flexed whilst you were cutting. In my humble opinion it always helps to clamp a piece of wood along the cut line under the masonite to prevent this kind of movement of the masonite. Of course I’m aware this particular backdrop already had some cleats behind it. Nevertheless, where you cut the hardboard was indeed not supported. Another recommendation for anyone who would like to cut prepared backdrops is about supporting the piece. It really helps to have the off cut part support a little bit lower than the main piece that needs to remain. This prevents the cut from bending in, which can cause the circular saw to get stuck, or worse cause damage to the work piece or even injuries.
Do think your choice of saw really helped, with the angle grinder handle this kind of saw is easy to maneuver, won’t lay all of its weight on the work piece and the rather shallow indeed cuts through the masonite like a knife cuts through butter.
Love the fill in backdrop painting results, awesome how it already changed the perspective! Cheerio

Hey Dave, I’m trying to get onto your website but I can only find your art blog. I remember there being something like related links and I was trying to find it again. I was wondering if it still exists ? Anyway, love the content.

What material would you recommend to use to make an HO car to an On30 car?

Depends on the type of car you want to build but I prefer wood. Styrene is also an excellent choice.
