    This music is BEAUTIFUL!!!! I went to Chicago with my family recently. And at the Chicago Jay Pritzker Pavilion, A symphony was practicing the 'Benediction'. I LOVE THAT SECTION!!! The song has so much emotion and feels like magic.

    A very important piece of music that is slowly but surely getting the recognition it always deserved. Playing the entire thing at my music camp this summer, tune in 7:00 PM CST Saturday (7/27) on the Lutheran Summer Music RUclips channel!

    Staggeringly sublime music and criminally overlooked. This should be standard rep, for sure. Bravo MO for your beautiful playing and obvious love of this score.

    Yet another Hidden Figure in our rich African American history. Great to see some recognition of this artist. Also check out Florence Price’s work.

      We purposefully hide ourselves from these great orchestrations by our ever growing ' insular and tribalistic mentality hence the proliferation of black musical sub culture such as Rapp and hip hop and contemporary r ot generated by black people for their consumption and subsequent social degradation.😢

    This is wonderful. The first time I've ever heard and orchestral piece by Bonds - I had previously known her only as a composer of piano works and songs.

      @@silenzia9what a pity....many works of Price too have been lost 😢 it is a shame if you think that among many billions of human beings so a few are those who are able to write music and especially good music....so we can obviously loose many things, it doesn't matter ... 😞😞

    Note that MO violist and occasional program annotator Sam Bergman says he believes at least the fifth movement is about the bombing of the church in Birmingham, not about Montgomery.

      He thinks? Margaret Bonds wrote that in her program notes for the work.

    • @MrPrincetrumpet
      @MrPrincetrumpet Год назад +5

      @@nathanhol42001 I have the score in front of me and Bonds' own program notes do not mention the city of Birmingham specifically. The name of the movement is "One Day in the South", so, it's fair to say that she was referring to a horrific event that took place in a region of our country but not specifically Montgomery. To include that event in a piece called "Montgomery Variations" is reasonably confusing, given that horrible things happened during that time in (too) many places in our country.
      I spent quite a bit of time looking for any other writings by her about that bombing and have come up short. If you have anything, I'd be grateful to see it, thanks.

    • @Andrew-Crust
      @Andrew-Crust Год назад +1

      @@MrPrincetrumpet I have in my score under "Bonds' Program..." "Children were in Sunday School learning about Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Southern 'die-hards' planted a bomb and several children were killed."

    • @MrPrincetrumpet
      @MrPrincetrumpet Год назад +1

      @@Andrew-Crust Correct. The point was that she wasn't specific about where the bombing happened, even though the world knew because it was in the news and still relatively fresh in our minds at that time. She could have just easily called the piece "The Birmingham Variations" but chose to focus on the Montgomery portion instead. No matter... it's a good piece by any name.
