Kids of a certain age will have grown up with the far gentler original song long before the Toy Dolls got hold of it - they've actually done a very good job.
It is a kids song in the UK which little kids can sing along to in schools years back.It was written in 1956.
Baz Warne from The Stranglers is on this.
Remember many a party drunkenly bouncing around to this. In my memory Paul McCartney's Frog Song was drifting around as well?
Can remember when they would put this on at parties and everyone used go mental when it ramped up, nothing like a bunch of drunk adults going nuts over a kids song lol
The Toy Dolls released this back in 1982, I remember my mother singing along to this version with us back then, its another fun song like " I've got Asthma" or " Blue Suede Shoes".
These reprobates are still performing and the frontman Olga is a brilliant guitarist. Remember dancing on a table to this at Angels in Wigan circa 1984... and falling off spilling my beer. Try 'Diedre's a Slag' or 'Barry the Roofer'. One of their contempories from the North West (of England) worth a listen are Half Man Half Biscuit. Poking fun at all and sundry with titles such as "All I Want for Christmas Is a Dukla Prague Away Kit", "Quality Janitor", "Bottleneck at Capel Curig" and my favourite, "National Shite Day"
* Deirdre 😉 'Fiery Jack' is fun, too! 😄👍
Nellie the Elephant" is a children's song written in 1956 by Ralph Butler and Peter Hart about a fictional anthropomorphic elephant of that name. (Wikipedia)
The original version was by Mandy Miller, a child actress, back in 1956! It would often feature on the BBC's Junior Choice show on Radio 1, way back in the 70's! This version is obviously a novelty version that's meant to be played at parties. I do like the shuffle on the chorus, though. Ok to listen to on the very odd occasion, but wouldn't want to hear it all the time.
I haven't heard this song since I was in England during the mid 80's.. I remember seeing them on some show (probably The Tube) and telling my mates that there needed to be a special Live Aid for just the singer of Toy Dolls coz he was just skin and bones. lol
Olga is a fantastic guitar player. Check out Toccata and Fugue by JS Bach done by the dolls. Or even dueling banjos
Baz Warne lead singer from Stranglers was in Toy Dolls, Sunderland band
Oh, interesting! I did not know that! Thank you for the info! 😀👍
I remember watching this group live in one of my local pubs in 1980 then they were known as the showbiz kids and the single was she goes to finos
Yeah I remember that one 😀 I once had their '10 Years Of Toys' compilation album 😊
Escaping the circus and going to a better place. I hadn't heard it since the eighties. It was the last song played at an old friends furneral service 2 weeks ago.
It was a great party tune I was not alone after a few pints of liquid refreshment bopping along like an lunatic to this.
There was a real "WTF" moment where Chris was wondering what was happening.
It's definitely a kids song, one that they played here many moons ago 🌙
It is a kids song, But at the end of the night back in the day everyone would go mental and bounce to this!🤪🤪🤪
Luv' it, grandkids (twins) will 4 in a couple of weeks time, guess this gets added to the party playlist , fun fun fun .😁
It's a punk adaptation of a kids song in the uk
It´s a classic and it was part of any party in my youth!!
Haha, I first heard this as a Swedish cover, then the Toy Dolls song later. It got us jumping and screaming, once destroying a sofa in the process. It only got worse when we got to see the video with all the flailing arms. That made it a standard for the camping ground on Rock Festivals. Still is. I watched them perform it last year. Audience went bananas. 🍌🍌🍌
Great song still around playing live concert
ITS A KIDS SONG FROM LONG AGO BUT PUNKED UP
You just can't beat the toy dolls listened to them my whole life best punk band on the planet and local to me lol
popular in discos in pubs all over the uk
Pure childish joy 😂
Lookit you bobbleheads...🤗💕
This is fun. Just fun! You never heard that before? 😂
You are alowed to smile! 😅
😄
Loved this when it first hit the airwaves
Ha ! Great Giggle that was !Good ol nellie ! Similar thing was done by the "Dickies" in the late 70s The "Bananna Splits" Theme song ! Id better Throw in a Proper serious band now in case you think I am in a small room licking windows ! "Budgie " track " Parents" . or "Zoom", cheers !
Two pieces of useless trivia about this song:
Baz Warne, now of The Stranglers becames the bass player for The Toy Dolls after this;
The original version of this song was recommended for CPR - sing the chorus twice and hit the beat and you would do 30 compressions. Trouble was more people knew this version, which was nearly twice the speed... and they tended to be too shallow on compressions, so Staying Alive is used instead.
1. This is the fun-punk version of an old kids song 2. in the 1980s and 1990s this was a big party hit in all Independet and student clubs 3. It's hard to get a better performance and more fun in a live concert than with the Toy Dolls in these years.
Yeah, I remember this as a kid in the uk 60 years ago , it was often played on children's request shows on the radio. Of course in the UK at that time a 'trump' was what kids called a fart so it was an amusing record !
Big crowd pleaser live. Lighthearted and just fun
It really is! Punked up 😎
Brilliant fun 😁 I only do two songs on karaoke this one and Jilted John. Drunk people love it lol
Thanks for playing one of my recommends. This song when I was 12-13 was the song everyone loved and would pogo to like crazy at the under 18 discos on the UK. The lead guitarist is now the front man for the stranglers. I guess you kinda need to know tge context behind it. It was like a child becoming a teenager and throwing aside the childhood songs be desecrating them. Edit. This actually was there biggest hit but the B side of the single was fisticuffs in Frederick street and was much better musically. Regards
The Toy Dolls are meant to be a great live act, but oddly this song, due to its chart success and 'novelty' feel, actually harmed their career in the home country. They still tour around the world, but not in England since the early 90s, I believe. Formed well away from the angrier punk scene in London, they though punk should be enjoyable and a good time. This one - an original, not a cover this time - is "James Bond Lives Down Our Street" ruclips.net/video/_SDvb3cjPQg/видео.html
need to see it live but hay
Even punks need an escape
Noooo! Don't put these guys on the same (low) level as the blimmen Wiggles!! 😭😄 Anyway, this was a blast from the past! 😀 I can't believe this song is now 40 years old! 🤯
This is a kids song, but it was a punk rock cover
Kinderpunk but fun.
A great song of their's,is I've got asthma.
Its crazy watching Americans confusion over this song.😂😂😂😂 Just so you inow every English kid knows this original song is from 1950s - this is a pop punk version.
and just so you know, we are Canadian. 😁
Why Nellie the Elephant? Toy Dolls have so many great songs and for some reason someone always requests this song. It gives off the wrong impression that they are not talented band.
It certainly is a kids song, there were a few bands covered them back in the 80's, you should check out The Banana Splits song by The Dickies! Love the TV show, now sure about the punk cover of the theme song!! Love some of the looks and expressions you made during this one. Why is music not fin amy more? Is it coz it's all about the money now?
Great live band.
