Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.forgottenw...
Yesterday we were looking at the new resurrection of the AutoMag pistol, and today I have it out at the monthly BackUp Gun match. Is it appropriate to bring this behemoth of a pistol to a "backup" match? Sure!
My experience with magnum automatic pistols has been very mixed...actually, just mostly poor. I was really curious to see if all the work that went into the new rendition of the AutoMag would actually fix the problems of the original. Lo and behold, it looks like it did! The gun has run flawlessly for me, rather to my cynical surprise. It's a beast of a pistol, but still substantially more comfortable to shoot than full-power .44 Magnum revolvers.
When AutoMag Ltd asked to send me a loaner gun to film, I was really skeptical. I turned them down a couple years ago when the gun was still very much a project in progress. When they came back more recently with actual production ready to go I accepted, but with a whole lot of skepticism (I didn't tell them that). I am honestly impressed with the result of all their work. They took a dumpster fire of an original design and it looks like they have actually put in the work and refinement to make it a proper pistol. It is reliable, accurate, and true to the aesthetic of the originals. Remarkable!

But once again asking: If this is the backup, does the main gun come on tracks?
Always make sure you back up gun is bigger than your carry gun.
Look up in orbit...
When you come with 556 NATO and 50AE then the back up is literally twice the caliber...
When your 155mm howitzer runs out of ammo...
2 gun action match with .50 cal rifle and .44 automag.
Ian one month: Shows up at Back Up Gun Match with railgun
Ian another month: Automag
Everyone else: Jealous
Next match - E-11 Blaster. Comes 39th out of 39.
I thought that was a joke, until I remembered the rail gun
Everyone else: "Jesus..."
And then he shocked them all by showing up with an actual sane backup gun.
I bet that at first some may have been a bit put off by Ian's eccentricities, but now I'm sure that most look forward to seeing him.
Genuinely impressed that they re-engineered and improved the pistol. I'm rooting for this iteration.
Also if a major ammo maker such as Federal would start making .44 automag rounds.
Agreed. I'll always root for someone that has put the time and work into developing something properly, instead of half-assing to make a quick buck.
I would be rooting for it too, if it weren't for the $3500 pricetag.
@@oktayyildirim2911 Thinking that if built properly, its impossible to make cheaply. Its design makes it inherently expensive.
@@christopherharmon2433 I call BS. Quality rotating-bolt autoloading rifles require more machining at an equivalent level of quality to these pistols, yet they can be had for under a third of the cost.
I understand that Auto Mag doesn't have the advantage of a large production volume, but I'm sure that can't explain this ridiculous markup.
6:01 that's some incredible form at the end there, he just eats that recoil like it was nothing
He's a big guy
Man has put some time on the range and it shows
Funny, was about to make the exact same comment. Has forearms like hams, which probably helps.
I think it's Matt Haught, he was in the shotgun duckbill choke and other videos on forgotten weapons.
@@TheFanatical1 Your fingers slid while typing "put burgers in his belly" ;)
More seriously, that guy's stability is damn impressive, I'm not sure .50 would shake him.
"And that is the difference between cover and concealment" 🤣🤣🤣
44 magnum is pretty good at turning cover into concealment.
You know, I don’t have a particularly solid grasp of competition shooting but I get the impression that this isn’t what they had in mind as a firearm that would be classified as a “back up gun”
I had a Sister In-Law who could use it as a bra gun!
It's for when your quick-firing 75mm artillery piece runs out of ammo.
Well, maybe the primary was a Barrett .50?
A GM6 Lynx (.50 cal) perhaps?
...he pulled it from his ankle holster.....
It's nice to see that Ian has gone from guns that struggle to knock over the iron targets, to a hand cannon that blows the uprights off the bases.
6:02 Holy shit, Mr Timer Dude handled that gun like a friggin BEAST.
It would appear those arms arent just for show...
lmao, damn gun barely even moved when that dude fires it - nice!
My nephew's Desert Eagle & big bore revolvers move a wee bit more than that in my scrawny ass 5'5 135lb hands LOL. And my nephew isn't much bigger either, kid just likes big guns!

I think that's Rob Haught. He teaches shotgun classes with his dad. One of the best shotgun instructors
He knew we would want him to do this after the video on the new one.. The crazy SOB had already done it. lol
At Stage 1 Ian had forgotten one thing:
Heavy is good, heavy is reliable, if you can't shoot it you can always hit it with it!
Rade in Snatch lol
Outstanding Reference!
outstanding indeed! Nailed it. Snatch is one of my top ten all time favorites for sure! Even more than lock, stock, and 2 smoking barrels!

I'm sure, after the .30sc match, the Usual Crew are relieved to see Ian show up with something obviously weird.
No problems with the steel this time...
I dunno if the steel would agree.
The auto mag knocked the carbon out of the target
The recoil looks like shooting a Magnum in an old resident evil game, the sound and the cadence too haha
Haha! That's what I was thinking too!
Next video is Ian vs the Tyrant.
@@alun7006 yeah or Wesker 😎
I could most certainly be wrong but isn't this the magnum in the new RE Village? it def has the recoil of the early games down though 😅
The Automag is in Resident Evil 7, and the Wildey is in Village. I'm glad Capcom is getting more people aware of these spectacular handguns.
The friendly tone of your range officers always surprises me in a positive way. I have given up shooting certain competitions because the range officers always treat everyone like shit. You feel like you've done something wrong the moment you enter the parking lot. Nice to see and hear a match with such a positive vibe to it.
5:58 "Big hats off to Auto mag limited"
Ian: * keeps big hat on *
I remember reading about the .44 AutoMag in the 1972 Guns & Ammo Annual. Nice to see this coming back, and better than ever.
This one is definitely better than the old ones, although nothing will have the cachet of the first North Hollywood models
I've been following the "auto-mag" since the seventies, it's good to finally see it act like a decent gun, kudos for those who've actually done the changes, made it handle well. Hope I get the opportunity to shoot one someday. Thanks!
For the low low price of 4 grand and $2+ a round
You too can experience this
And to think
The older ones cost even more for a while there
@@1stCallipostle hey now, it'll be $1.30/round once sbrammunition has production in full swing. A bargain! /s
@@Stout936 You know the ammo shortage has been too long when seeing that number for magnum ammo hardly feels like a joke anymore
@@1stCallipostle I never owned a big bore magnum during the before times. How much was ammo for something like a 44 before?
1:37 keeping the range safety officer instructions and checks in the edit is appreciated and important. Many channels just leave it out of the cut.
The "fun" part of shooting must be shown with the "responsible" part of gun handling.
👍
Respectfully
For all that say the recoil on this is violent, the fact that we're seeing the gun recoil means its recoil is actually less violent as it is slower recoiling than other guns
It's a lot of mass being pushed around. Look at dudes shooting .44 mag in revolvers. The gun snaps up much more violently than this appears too. It's just more exaggerated here because you can actually track it visually.
@@MandoWookie yeah, the cycling of the action eats some of the energy so recoil on this would be a bit less than a revolvers.
@@ALovelyBunchOfDragonballz Yeah it does, the action of the slide moving takes a lot of the initial "snap" out of the shot.
haha loved the reminder of the difference between cover and concealment. these automags have always been interesting to me, never handled one, but they remind me of oversized 22 plinking pistols like the victory, ruger mark series, ect. and even a bit of something like a luger, definitely has that early 1900s form factor but in a very unique scaling compared to the rest
A phrase never, ever heard except with a .44 Automag: “He’s going for his backup gun…RUN AWAY!!”
Well this was Dirty Harrys backup gun so makes sense
The recoil looks insane. Talk about muzzle flip, wow.
He was able to shoot it one handed so it can't be as bad as it looks.
The last guy absolutely bossed the recoil. it barely flipped at all for him.
Stout yes. But the semi auto action eats some of the recoil so it is probably noticeably easier shooting than a .44 mag revolver.
@@ChewieOnTwoWheels a couple of guys handled the one round well, indeed.
@@pelimania2786 agreed. Still, a metal frame will transfer more shock than a polymer frame gun.
Showing us the difference between cover and concealment. Love it!!!
2:11 I love how the concussion of the pistol kicks up the dust on the barricades
"You can't hit me! I'm behind cover!"
"No, sir, I'm firing a .44 AutoMag. Your cover is concealment."
This gun fits the forgotten weapons logo perfectly.
In 1971 I saw an old-timer Chicago cop carrying an Auto-mag as his back-up gun. He must have gotten one of the very first. Back then Chicago cops HAD to carry .38 specuals as their offical gun, but were allowed to carry anything they wanted as a back up...most opted for 1911's.
It’s not a gun for rapid follow up shots is it? Biggest problem i see based on this match is a lack of capacity, but then if 7 rounds of .44 isn’t enough then you have bigger problems.
If you have managed to land a 44 mag or in this case 44 auto mag round on target and it is not dead, dying or audibly screaming it's regret of it's life choices while becoming acquainted with what the ground tastes like whatever you are shooting at has earned the right to win this engagement
You'd have to ask the third buffalo for parley.
@@michaelkeha Anything less than a Rhinoceros probably isn't sticking around
Considering 9mm makes bears screw off real quick ("it'll just make them mad!" Is a total lie, bears aren't stupid enough to engage in a fight they may well bleed out from later)
Yeah, few things are sticking around for .44 AMP
The ejection pattern looked pretty darn consistent on that bad boy.
This pistol was a lot easier to resist when it functioned poorly. It would go nicely with the Ruger Government Target.
If this qualifies as your "BUG" I want to know what Ian's main gun is, The Flashbang Despenser? Lol

2:24 Ian just blew that creep away. He aint giggling anymore !!!
This is probably the first good review this gun has ever gotten, over DECADES of production. That's kind of wild, and very impressive of the new iteration of the company to finally be the first to make one that works :D
I love this content. Talking about guns is great. Shooting them afterwards is better
Great video - really interesting to see a powerful handgun/round perform in the hands of an expert shot. Nice!
I like it when you incorporate your friends into your videos.
I believe that the B-Roll is universally what we would term: “Damning with faint praise.”
Yeah, I was thinking along the same lines. Given how impressed Ian was with it, I was surprised that the other shooters didn't think it was so cool. Maybe because they each only got one shot, they couldn't tell some of the other characteristics that Ian got to experience, like reliability.
The way the barrels moved when he shot between them was hilarious...
"You're going to use what?"
Living in the UK, the question is pretty much moot anyway, but there are few, if any, guns that I want MORE than an Automag. From the moment I saw one of the originals, I have thought they were one of the best looking pistols EVER.
If they can get the price down to around 2k for a basic model, they will really put a hurting on the 44 magnum revolver market. Time will tell if they can get the price down whilst maintaining quality and reliability.
It really won't impact the 44 magnum revolver market. This is a proprietary round and costs vastky more to shoot than a 44 magnum. Not to mention you can also shoot 44 special in a revolver.
@@thefrogking481 is .44 special any cheaper than .44 mag at this point. I don't think I have ever seen it on shelves
@@thefrogking481 Shame this model still needs its own proprietary ammo. I feel like the next step is making it feed .44 magnum
2k is still really steep for most people
@@kameronjones7139 it’s a few months more savings but look at it from this perspective $2000 is about the cost of a 1911 more than the MSRP of a performance center 629. It’s a semi automatic, 44 magnum caliber, 7+1 pistol. If it were 2k it would be fairly competitive
When you look at Ian, the .44 AutoMag seems like the sort of gun that would be his EDC.
Glad an old icon like this has been given new life. But the real question, will it be appearing at a 2 gun ACM sometime soon? :)
Back in the 80s, a buddy of mine owned one of the original 44 auto mags. Cool looking pistol. He went out to a range to practice and hurt his shoulder from the recoil and nailed himself in the face with the recoil too. He's always been a bit of a knothead.....
I must admit I'm along the same lines of Ian on this one. Hey, you have a roller delayed, toggle locked pistol? I say no problem. Does it make any damned sense? Hell no! But I'm willing to give it a try...
Anybody who is letting somebody to shoot whit his gun it can be a flintlock or coastal cannon i will rise my hand.
Shotgun Matt's reaction to the recoil was priceless; might as well have been .45Auto for the amount of muzzle-flip we saw!
Would be awesome to see a shoulder stock kit like a modern nostalgia style C96.
A "brace kit" for legal ease reasons
But it would be a funny looking thing
It's silhouette kinda looks like an artillery Luger anyway
Doing WW1 things to it makes sense enough
Thank you Ian!
The recoil is massive, you're a mad lad and I love this. Bravo!
No kidding my buddy has one of these things and it hurts . Makes shooting my Desert Eagle 50ae a plessure .
I have never seen Ian drop steel-targets with such gusto before 😀
This should only count as a backup gun if you're André the Giant.
or Kentucky Ballistics. Have you seen him shoot two 500 S&W one in each hand ? He has hands and wrists strength few people have.
that is one cool spacegun, really cool showing on the range too
One thing is for sure!
You’ll never do a double tap with that monster. If you get a hit though a double tap isn’t going to be required.
You might be able to flip a spinner with one magazine though.
@@simbry49 one round maybe?
@@stephenbinion6348 probably not. It might work if you could triple tap. But that isn't going to happen.
Thank you , Ian .

You missed the hostages.
Wow! Definitely a badass piece! Must get one!
Some of the design changes they've made could be retrofitted to vintage guns, like the enlarged cutout in the bolt and the the magazines that sit sightly higher. It would be wonderful if they could breathe new life into some of the barely functional older guns.
New bolt has longer locking lugs so you'd need a new barrel too. But the new mags might work in the originals.
@@ericmcfarlin4272 Yeah, the locking lugs are different, but the other changes to the bolt could be done retroactively. In the other video, Ian mentioned a large rounded cutout in the bottom of the bolt that encourages it to lock into battery.
Also, the new version has a light weight titanium firing pin to reduce the possibility of firing out of battery. That's a perfect example of an easy upgrade for the vintage guns.
Check out this video just before the 13 minute mark to see what I mean about the cut in the bolt

Yes, thereby destroying any collector value they might have had. I understand that these things go for quite a lot on the collector market, where the value of a gun is largely based on how interesting and desirable it is for whatever reason, not on how reliable or effective or well-made. Anyone who has an original would be much better off selling it on the collector market and then using the funds to simply buy a new one.
Besides, you can't retrofit improved metallurgy into the old original guns. The biggest problem with the old ones wasn't the crap reliability, it was that they quite readily BREAK, as in snap. And replacement parts/frames were usually just as fragile as the original parts so there was no escaping the problem. That's due to poor or badly chosen materials and equally bad heat treating. No way you can fix that with a little mill work. I'd wager that any surviving old ones out there probably spend 99% of their time in gun safes and zero or something close to it at the range. It simply doesn't make financial sense to use them as shooters.
Can you imagine the angst of the owner of an original 70s automag who decides to take it to the range just that once, and return it to the safe afterwards forevermore. Only to have the frame snap or the barrel burst on him, destroying most of the value.
Very envious. Awesome hand cannon!
If they did a snub nose PDW version that would be pretty neat
Presumably they'd have to chamber it for something more manageable, but I think you're right - a short barrel version could be an extraordinarily pretty gun. I can't help thinking it would look like the love child of a desert eagle and a Walther p38/pp... with a little bit of Whitney Wolverine DNA thrown in for good measure.
It would be a wrist breaker if it had a shorter barrel and would have to be re-engineered to keep it at a sane level of recoil!
Now I am looking to add this to my collection of automatic Mags. Great video
Dirty Harry? Nah, this some Clean Jesus right here
As a wise American once said. Yee haw
Great strong hand shot! Ian
Recoil looks violent, I dare say I'd mount a compensator on it. Overall I think it runs wayy better than the originals
Honestly, a lot of these big bore hand guns aren't as violent as they look. First, they're REALLY big heavy guns, so the weight goes a long way by itself. But, while they do have a lot of recoil, it's more of a slower 'push', rather than a fast hard 'punch', so you still get the muzzle rise(unless you're the last dude lol) because of the amount of energy, but it's a slower release of energy over more time.
I say this as someone who's a whopping 5'5 135lbs and has shot a couple different big bore hand guns(my nephew's guns, and he's only a few inches taller, similar weight).
@@RyTrapp0 que the gunstappo coming to tell you how wrong you are because of petty reasons like "nah get a wheel gun" 😂
@@RyTrapp0 I think it's because handgun rounds typically run at a lower pressure than a rifle. Similar to a shotgun in that regard. Huge round, but at low pressures.
Really cool to see this work
Such a pretty gun
Placed 9th with an automag. how EVEN.
According to Beverly Hills Cop, they dont make .44 automag ammo anymore.
Interesting seeing a competition that has an emphasis on quality with the courses of fire versus that of quantity.
I went with with a friend of mine that wanted to compete in an IPSC style action shooting match. Online info was scant, so we went in person and got the details upon arrival at the event's destination. To both of our surprise, the half-day event required 300 rounds of ammo. My friend only had 200 rounds, so he didn't enter.
But we both came away with puzzlement of why such an excessive amount of ammo rounds was required for shooting at cardboard and metallic targets.
I was expecting those two barrels to get sucked in by the vacuum and I wasn't disappointed!
Nice that you let some others shoot it to get some additional reactions to that monster gun. Those matches do look fun.
With ever video you make about this gun, it makes me want it more and more now that it actually works.
You sir without a doubt have the coolest job in the world.
3:43 you can catch a clear view of the bullet in a frame right after this shot, pretty cool
To quote Charles Bronson "Wildey's here"
Despite being a completely different gun
Wow! It finally works! Impressive.
I wish you could do this with every gun you breakdown! nice runs!
Seems like a cool match and a cool group of dudes 👍
I kinda love them in a weird nostalgic way. Reminds me of the autococker paintball markers I used in the past.
Autococker... Now that's a name I've not heard in a long time... a long time.
@@Full_Otto_Bismarck Same here, still have my original 1999 Shocktech SFL though
@@StefsEngineering Hang on to it, the early history of paintball isn't all that well documented and items like the guns/markers are obviously an important part of that history.
Maybe I'm just getting old, but it seems less and less popular now a days with airsoft growing in comparison. I imagine the cost of paint alone is a big barrier now for younger players, good paint was expensive even back when i was playing.
Thanks for the little trip down memory lane though, I hadn't even thought about paintball in years.
Nice shot with your right hand!
So, it took _only_ five decades since 1972 to work out the flaws. XD
Love the little laugh. Fellow 44 shooter that totally gets that. The caliber where backstop awareness requires a solid stop.
I have always found this gun appealing, nice to see it actually work!
Such an interesting sound it makes, great stuff man
Sort of between a twitchooo and a shapooof...
I mean, I realize it's probably never going to be anything but a fun gun on the range but I HAVE to have one, cause Sudden Impact is an awesome movie!
Agreed BUT if someone is enough of a fanboy, this can be a effective tool even for edc. Armpit/Shoulder holster, constant training, reloading tools to help with ammo cost, etc. As a european and a HUGE Vintage Americana fan and collector, I'd carry this for self defense. Even if it's way less practical than a polymer 9mm, I'd still do it. Maybe not daily but colder months with a heavy jacket, why not 😁
That was entertaining-thank you.
Outstanding pistol, glad to see it running so well. I know for sure they would not let you shoot it on the pistol side of the indoor range I shoot at. Maybe just maybe on the 100 yard rifle side as the back stop is thicker. The muzzle blast of it firing would be deafening.
I’ve always wanted one of these to go with my S&W mod 29, but because of reliability problems I never bought one. I may have to get one now.
Those plates go down with authority! Don't worry about running out of bullets. When the slide locks back, you can beat them to death with it.

I like how it just drops those plates
jeeesus... I want to see the last guy magdump that thing. He took the recoil like a champ!
I'm always surprised neck shots don't count. Going through the larynx and cervical vertebrae would incapacitate the assailant
Those steel plates agree you completed the stage...completely.😁 As mentioned, worth mentioning again: "With a .44AMP, Cover ≠ Concealment..." Sage words.
5:58 "it doesn't kickback hard enough" nice to know I'm not alone :P
Well, may we ask when will we see Ian running the new Desert Eagle in .44, .357 or .50 with the new muzzle brake barrels? Unreal recoil control difference between the new barrels vs the no brake barrels. Love mine.
Finally an Automag that actually functions.
