Kamal Haasan Sir Ji the 'Encyclopedia' nd Mega icon of Indian cinema in a career spanning over 6 decades (60+yrs not out) Unarguably one of the G.O.A.T "🐐" in world cinema.
No other actor frm india or probably in the world would even come close to this God of method acting ultra legend who has so much versatility to showcase in so many diff roles and experiments out of the box fr decades in multi languages by also multi tasking in etcetera categories..
But Unfortunately our govt yet to confer padma vibhushan or dadasaheb phalke or bharath ratna award to this living ultra legend A.K.A "Sakalakalavallavan" (Master of many arts) "Ulaganayagan" (Universal hero). Such a Pity that it is already awarded to the less deserving..French govt has recognised his talent nd contribution and conferred him "Chevalier de L'Ordre Arts et Lettres" award.
Like all say, Hollywood is where he should have been..Imagine if Quentin tarantino is getting inspired frm a scene in Kamal Sir Ji movie "Aalavandaan" nd implementing it in his own hollywood movie "Kill Bill". Even queen Elizabeth had once visited the set of his shelved movie project "Marudhanayagam". His "Nayakan" movie featured in many lists of the greatest films ever made, including TIME's "All Time 100 best films" and CNN-IBN''s "100 greatest Indian films of all time". He has also interviewed "Life of Pi" movie director Mr Ang Lee.Even Mr Jackie Chan has heaped praise on him nd expressed his desire to work with him. All these simply shows that he is a class apart...
He is always ahead of time with his advanced story telling thoughts nd also introduces the best technologies..He had also tried to implement OTT a decade ago nd ws heavily criticized..but now time has proven his practical vision. His movies which weren't appreciated when it was released are all tagged on cult status now.
All the money he made as an actor he invested in movies by risking on big budget projects just coz of his love fr cinema..He is the 1st actor who has turned his fans association into welfare organisation. Also an inspiration nd idol fr many present gen budding nd established superstars in the industry.
110+ awards fr 220+ movies in multiple languages with multiple industry hits nd he is also someone who holds the record fr an indian actor whose most films are submitted to Oscar's frm india fr the best foreign language film category.
Wish nd hope Oscar jury gets to know about this ultra legend fr "Honarary/lifetime achievement award" Oscar. But I guess awards doesn't matter to him much coz he is anyway self motivated lwyz nd believes in blood, sweat nd tears and not magic. More than 32 fractures nd multiple injuries but still going strong...
IMO it is always better to stay underrated than be overrated (Underrated > Overrated) So no statement is an over statement fr this man..it's all an understatement.

Nayankan is one of his best as per acting... He imitated marlan Brando which is soo accurate. If you want to see his acting skills and his directional screen play.. watch Anbe Sivam ...which has IMDB rating of 8.7 and 98% liked this movie as per google
He did not imitate marlon brando at all, he bought his own style to the movie also u can argue kamal hassan took one step higher and acted variety of ages. Other than Mohanlal performance in Iruvar, this is easily the best acted film in indian history.

I remember when my mother showed me a pic of Kamal as Avvai Shanmugi in a magazine and asked me if I knew who it was. I didn't and when she told me it was Kamal, I was blown away.

Hard to list one or even a few movies of Kamal or Kammoo as I used to call him as a child. Some I like just for a sentimental value as I saw them as a child with my family. Some are intellectual but now as an adult I may find some holes in their logic . Still one recommendation would be Mahanadhi. Lots of bold , as in previously unseen story points. And very ahead of its time

My recommendations would be:
- Moondram Pirai (Tamil, 1982), re-made as Sadma(HIndi, 1983). Both has Kamal Haasan and Sri Devi in it. I have not seen the Hindi version, so im not sure whether is there any difference.
- Nayakan (1987), Directed by Mani Ratnam.
- Anbe Sivam (2003)
My wife is a foreigner who doesn't understand Tamil. One day when I went back from work, I found her crying. She just finished watching "Moondram Pirai" on tv and couldn't stop talking about it for weeks to her family and friends.
Great choice to start watching Kamal Haasan movies. I would add "Salangai Oli" to the list. If watching in Hindi, please start with "Ek Duuje Ke Liye". His first Hindi movie that shook big B's position as the #1 actor in that language.
Nayagan was listed in Time Magazine's "Top 100 Movies of the Century" is a "must watch".

Anbe Shivam - master piece beyond its time.....
Yes, the man has done it all. The title 'World hero' is very much suitable for Kamal Haasan. He is incomparable and has set certain records which is not surpassed by any other actor. I don't know which actor in this world who has multiple talents as him being a director, producer, dancer, actor, technician, assistant director, choreographer, lyricist, television presenter, singer, make up artist, screenwriter and i don't know if i left any. When it comes to his talent, the first thing that always comes to my mind is the movie 'Dasavatharam' where he did 10 roles! That is quite insane, he also gave different voice and body language for all the 10 characters. I doubt there is any actor in this world who did 10 roles in one movie.
There so many and the only that comes in my mind Indian which is good and Dasavataram or watch Appu where he is a shrink
I would like to recommend 'Hey Ram' but with Rick's anti Gandhi lens, I doubt you would like it (let's keep the understanding part aside for now), but it may be a good starting point of understanding Gandhi for you guys
If you don't want to watch it, my next suggestion would be 'Anbe Sivam'.

Yes, His dream project ' maruthanayagam' dropped in mid way a 20 years ago, because of budget constraints and a lot of issues. In 1997 itself this movie demanded 50 crores to make. But we are very eager to see that masterpiece movie
