I love the part with the drawing. When I learned animals in Finnish, I bought stickers of animals. And beside each sticker I wrote the Finnish word in both singular and plurality. I only studied that group of words twice and they are still stuck into my mind. Also, animals’ stickers are cute, which is a plus

Even though it sounds simple, I really like the “preview” part. It prepares my mind to know what’s coming so I’m not too confused as soon as I get to that chapter/section 🤣

I’m studying suomee for 5 months now and taking notes and repetition works the best for me. I also found out that teaching a classmate could be also helpful because I tend to explain it the way I understood a certain topic or just a simple vocabulary... that then we remember it together. Kiitos paljon!

I have just discovered your videos, as I am now taking lessons to learn more about the Finnish Language. Your videos and short lessons are very helpful and engaging. One way I try to remember things is to put words to music, sometimes to sing. I used this method when teaching young children new concepts and it was helpful and repetitive, but fun. Thank you for sharing your instruction…

Thank you SO MUCH for this helpful video and for your very clear and neat teachings!
For my experience, I can say a huge leap forward on learning English was by literally speaking it with foreigner people (I studied only french at school), so practicing it day by day was truly helpful.
    Thank you again SuperVarpu!

I can affirm from many years of experience teaching adult learners that the tip "teach others" is extremely effective. Not only do you learn what you need to, but in order to teach you need to know the material extremely well, and the very act of teaching someone else reinforces what you have learned. To help students prepare for tests, I suggested to them that they teach the material to someone who doesn't know it, always with very good results. :)

Great video! Kiitos Varpu! One of the tools I use in my language learning is a flash card app such as AnkiApp or AnkiWeb. You can write the Finnish word and the equivalent in your own language and then test yourself. The app hides one “side” of the card and shows it when you want to check. Then you tell the app whether it was easy for you or more difficult, and depending on the result, the app will have you review the difficult ones more often. You can also add pictures and even sound files if you want to make things a bit more sophisticated. ;) For me, it has become a daily routine!

Thank Varppu for these lovely videos and your permasmile! Eons ago, when I was at school, I learnt languages by self testing and by devouring books in three languages. By the way I like the pictures that appear in the background of your videos. I was lucky to inherit a 1967 120x120cm Reidar Sarestöniemi painting from my parents. My mum was Finnish. The picture was exhibited in 1968 in Luxembourg, where we lived at the time. It shows a spectacular lappisch moonlit nightscape with rendeer made from 5 to 7 brushstrokes depending on the number of legs (3 to 5 ). I now decorates my office/bedroom.

You are describing the techniques I taught my special education students! Last December, as a 64 year old, I completed my 2nd baccalaureate degree. I earned the first one, in special education, 41 years prior to the BFA I earned recently. I used all of the techniques you mentioned mentioned to get A's in my art history classes. BTW, all of my grandparents were from Finland 🇫🇮 💕

As an English speaker, the most useful tool for me with Finnish is creating mnemonic devices by breaking down the syllables and trying to associate the sounds with English words.
This is an idea I took from a book for learning a different language and seems to help activate the memory better, since Finnish is not an IE language so doesn't have as much obvious overlap with other languages.
The key thing is trying to make things easier because it's so easy to dwell and or panic on what is more difficult.

Another good thing is applying "memory hooks" (or "Eselsbrücken" as we say in German).
Remembering the word "usein" (often) ist quite easy when you know that Usain Bolt often won the gold medal in Olympics. :D

You probably pay more attention to your pleasant beautiful accent of Finnish origin. But I know that it is your language that I need the most. Every time I try to learn Finnish while sleeping and at work aurally. Yle Puhe Radio Kuuntelemalla enemmän kuin kirjoittamalla. the main thing is to perceive the language as a game. Imitation and repetition as parrot

So, start with an aapinen. Finnish is interesting. No silent letters, every letter has one and only one sound. Compared to English....
Of course, most Finns speak English better than I do.
