For anyone having a problem with this (only audio and no video or vice versa), this was my fix:
- Set the profile to MP4 like the video suggested.
- EDIT the profile by clicking on the button to the right on the profile.
- On the Encapsulation tab, set it to "MPEG-PS" (note: this setting worked for me. If it didn't work for you try another setting with audio and video checkmarked below)
- On the Audio and Video tab, check "keep original audio/video track"
Once you're done with that, finish the same way the video does, by putting the ".mp4" extension at the end of the file. Good luck!

i know right.. i had to get rid of so many viruses in my journey of finding one and turns out.. the media player whom i thought screwed a wonderful video, saved it in the end.
For those who dont have audio follow those steps:
In the Audio Change Codec Tab, Change CODEC to "MPEG Audio (AAC)", and also change "Sample Rate" to "48000 Hz".

to everyone having audio issues, when in the converting station, click on the wrench logo that gives you the options of selecting convert outputs like "flv,mp4,mov etc." there is a tag labeled "audio" go to it and select the option ""KEEP ORIGINAL AUDIO TRACK" this will convert you're video with you're audio in both ears.
i also seem to get this result if i go to "video codec and click "keep original video track"
hope this helps, worked for me, still working on audio sync though.
*update - run you're vlc in "administrator"
and follow my instructions, audio will sync as well as be there xD

L BS yeah, didnt work for me ether, the only thing i decided to do instead was simply go and download "obs boradcasting" and instead of broadcasting to "twitch" i change the mode to "file output only" and where it says "replay buffer file path" at the end put a .mp4 and it auto records my stuff with volume and perfect syncing instead of this.
that might be a better solution honestly at this point, as for you're previous work trying to change it...cant really help with this anymore, gave up on trying to figure out its stupid pathing and b.s
hopefully this idea helps you out as another option and solution to a frustrating problem.

Kylie Fletcher Always had friends that left their smoke alarm beeping in the back for months and months at a time. When I would ask them about it, none of them knew the answer. "Oh, it's just the security alarm" or "Oh that shit is broken". It's like LOL? So instead of popping in a couple batteries or getting it checked out...you're going to sit for a year and listen to the damn thing spit out a beep every 10 seconds?

I think you have it set to re-encode, rather than remux. You only need to change the container from mkv to mp4, which is remuxing, not re-encoding. You neeed to choose "Keep original video track" and "Keep original audio track" when editing the profile next to "Video for MPEG4."

Dude, I actually thought it was my smoke alarm making the noise. I paused the video and walked around my house looking for a beeping detector and couldn't hear it anymore. then came back and played the video and realized it was the video.... jeesh!
Question: why does he select "video for mpeg 4 1080p TV/device" when there is an option "video -H.264 + mp3 (MP4)" what is the main difference? Thanks!
+TheHappybilmore I am not sure there is a difference. However when I tried it the way you do it all I got was sound and no video. I am going to try it the way this video says. I hope it works.

I successfully convert the video, and the video works when I play it on VLC. I can also upload the video to my iTunes library which means the video is an mp4. However, when I try to play the video in iTunes, the video is 3x as long and is constantly lagging w/o any audio.

You may have a .flac file instead lf the typical audio file. Just go in audio codec and check that, if that doesnt work make sure you are using the right video codec :)

I'm having a problem!!! I'm trying to convert mkv to mp3 and the mkv file is 20 minutes long... when i convert it it goes to 30 seconds or 3 minutes
It would be great if this actually worked but unfortunately I need audio with my converted file and this method only captures the video, not the audio so it's only good for silent movies.
This doesnt work anymore or it just doesnt work with MVK files with multiple audio streams and subtitles. it produces a blank video
I have discovered that when you have a file with 265 in it it does not work but the file I had which used 264 did work. So check your files. With the first file I tried I only got audio so i thought I did something wrong but then with the next it did work so then I discovered what the difference was.

I lost a lot of time in DaVinci resolve, because you did not show that we have to select MPEG4 AUDIO (AAC) in the Audio Tab.... I had no sound in DaVinci resolve, in my timelines....
I get good audio and glitches (lots and lots of glitches) after converting. In fact, mostly full grey screens. How do I fix that?
And is it necessary to add ".mp4" when naming the file? I thought that was already selected from the get go in vlc and while naming the file I noticed that mp4 was the file type.
subtitle won't show if I convert files with VLC
Xmedia-Recode is a great alternative and free. It doesn't have problem with subtitle, also lightspeed fast. Only took me 1 minute to convert a file while Handbrake took me 1 hour.
downloaded the 2017 version of VLC there is no 'video for' in the options at all
