I've been using OBS for like 2 years now and this is just the time that I realize that I can just convert my mkv file to mp4 through OBS. Thanks for this, really!!
Something to note. The time bar across the bottom is not the time it will take. It will show the length of the video, for instance in my case a 20 minute MKV. The progression is where it is in the video at that moment. For me it took almost 50 minutes to convert to MP4 that 20 minute video. I had closed everything else I could see that was open and went in the background and ended all tasks that didn't need to be running to see if that helped, but not by much. The output did have sound for VLC. I had problems with other software having no sound in the MP4. Why it worked with this one and not the others, I couldn't say. I see comments from several that this way of doing it they still had no sound. I'd suggest a google search on VLC MKV to MP4 conversion no audio.

MKV files can be quite large and it's great to be able to convert them into the more common and usable MP4 format. Thank you for the video, it's is very helpful.
No you have it backwards MP4 files are quite large MKVs have a greater compression rate. When you convert to MP4 you're making the video larger and when you convert to .mkv you're making it smaller while keeping the quality. .mkv is the prefferd format. I'm a video editor and I have made videos and converted them from .mkv to mp4 and the mp4s were always bigger. That's why when you download an mkv it 654 mbs and when you download and mp4 it's 1gig. Unless it's like a blu ray file or something mkv is always smaller.
That's fine. However, sometimes there are subtitles in the mkv, and you might want to embed them in the resulting mp4 file. It is also possible to do this using VLC, using the "Edit profile" button in the "Convert" dialog. Then go to "Subtitles" and use the respective checkbox.

It's probably because you saved it as the same name as the file you was converting. It will auto fill with the other name, still ending in the .mkv. So just try saving it as another name.
neither VLC or OBS converted the file to MP4! VLC did something but the new "converted" file was still an MKV! and OBS did literally nothing! be cool if you could update this video!

I have been using VLC for literally decades ... and I did not know it can transcode video formats! I've always used Adobe Premiere Pro / Media Converter for most things video but it doesn't support the MKV container. Brilliant! You are one clever guy, Kevin.

I have tried VLC on a number of AVI files to MP4. But, for MKV to MP4, use Handbrake. It's free and has far more quality and subtitle options and it's far easier to use. And, you can do a batch of MKV's and let it run overnight.
Hi there. Thank you for this video. It helped me to convert an MKV to an MP4, but it was not quite as smooth as it worked for you. What I mean by this is whenever I did the final step, an error message window popped up saying there is already a file there with that name, although I am 100% sure there was not. It converted it to the location I chose, even though the error message made it seem like it did not, but then the VLC windows are hard to close. I need to click "close windows" in the bottom bar several times before it closes. I had to try it many times before I finally got the conversion done.
Thank you. I started the process of using VLC because of OBS Studios only to find out halfway through at the end of the video of how to do it withing OBS. That streamlines things a great deal.
Thanks very interesting. I have to be honest and say I thought you were going to use Handbrake, which is a dedicated video file conversion tool. I didn’t know OBS could be used for conversion. For the more advanced user I would suggest using ffmpeg in the terminal as you can the directly copy from MKV to MP4 without re-encoding. Perhaps a follow-up video using ffmpeg ?
its 2024 and this just saved me ..my videos from obs was being saved to canva as a mk4 and i couldnt do anything with that but this video let me know that obs had its own converter in it so thanks
VLC media player is available for Windows, Linux, Mac OS. It's cross platform application that comes with all media codecs and can play all video formats. It's a free software , not a paid one. Everyone cay use and benefit from it.

thanks so much! i previously used handbrake to try and convert mkvs/webm video files into mp4s so i could edit them. it worked 1 time (took 3 hours for a 3min video), and then after that it would only successfully convert like 20 seconds of the video before quitting. i tried using it again and it estimated to take TEN hours to convert a 3 min video… so i switched to vlc and it works so well !! only takes 2 or so hours :)
For h264 files, it works just fine for me by just changing the file extension from mkv to mp4 because they use similar codecs. I have even taken 1080p h264 mkv files and change the extension to mp4 before convert into 720p mp4 files in VLC-player and it works flawlessly...
MKV is only a container. H264 isn't similar to MP4, it is MP4. You can extract the .mp4 file (or any video file format) from the MKV container using demuxing software.
Wow! Just transcoded a 308MB MKV RUclips video I downloaded to a 36MB MP4 with VLC, same resolution, no noticeable degradation, video VP9 --> H.265. Sweet! 😁

There are many traps in converting video. E.g. I converted a huge MOV-file into MP4 with VLC. VLC could reply the result without problems, but iOS and the Windows standard player didn't play the sound of the video. I needed to use the profile "MPEG4 1080p TV/device" and it worked. Thank good, there are some options in this convert-dialog to just convert some minutes to test the result, before running the convertion of a 100GB file ;-)
Honestly VLC is the only one I have found that plays my MKV files flawlessly. SM player pauses the video every few minutes and MPC flickers the image, I only wish VLC had better quality playback but it is fantastic for MKV files, if like me you don't want to convert then VLC is the way to go if ytou want smooth playback in VLC
The best app to do this is by using FFMPEG. And if you have any discrete GPU model from 2014 or newer, you can do a Lossless Conversion a lot faster. Like 1000% faster, and I'm not exaggerating. If you have AMD Radeon GPU, you can use AMF or VCE/VCN. With NVidia you can use NVENC. FFMPEG can handle both. However, if you don't want to convert any Video to retain its quality and just want to edit it right away, you can use DaVinci Resolve app any release version from year 2022. Filmora 2022 can also do it. Unfortunately Adobe Premiere Pro still doesn't support MKV import to this day, I don't know why.

In vlc while choosing where the converted file to be placed you have to type the name then press ok it'll change the format to mp4

And if you have any discrete GPU model from 2014 or newer, you can do a Lossless Conversion a lot faster. Like 1000% faster, and I'm not exaggerating.
If you have AMD Radeon GPU, you can use AMF or VCE/VCN.
With NVidia you can use NVENC.
FFMPEG can handle both.
However, if you don't want to convert any Video to retain its quality and just want to edit it right away, you can use DaVinci Resolve app any release version from year 2022.
Filmora 2022 can also do it.
Unfortunately Adobe Premiere Pro still doesn't support MKV import to this day, I don't know why.

Hey, Kevin! Long time no talk! Nice to see what you look like after all the years you were hosting out site. Video for RUclips HD will downgrade a 1080 video to 720. HOWEVER, I noticed there's a setting that says MPEG 4 1080p TV/device. THAT WORKED! Just a little tip.....
