Interesting documentary. I still get confused about the events that took place within England during the Norman occupation.

Yea, to Viking is in actuality a seasonal profession, but it’s a bit convoluted because it’s sort of piracy, but there’s also culture involved in it so it’s kind of its separate thing. Always help to simply and just saying Viking has become more of an umbrella term for the masses and it also does have a massive branding value today. It’s simply easier to just refer the norsemen as Vikings instead of giving the standard explanation.

Rollo of Normandy (aka Hrolfr) was the great-great-great grandfather of William I of Normandy (William The Conqueror). I am a decedent of them and therefore I am very interested in Viking history, and Scandinavian history in general.
    This is a good video.

@@WorldHistoryEncyclopedia I read the article and it is lacking that Jesus birth is about 4 years off from what year it is. “Common” not Christian Era or AD takes always from what it means.
Read the book Under the Influence, How Christianity Influenced Civilization, for a multitude of evidence that it should be AD.

Oeselians or Osilians is a historical name for the people who prior to the Northern Crusades in the 13th century lived in the Estonian island of Saaremaa (Ösel)[a] - the Baltic Sea island was also referred as Oeselia or Osilia in written records dating from around that time.[1] In Viking Age literature, the inhabitants were often included under the name "Vikings from Estonia".[2], as written by Saxo Grammaticus in the late 12th century.
A battle between Estonian and Icelandic Vikings off Saaremaa is described in Njál's saga as occurring in 972 AD

Compared to its close neighbors, Saaremaa has the richest finds of Viking treasures after Gotland in Sweden. This strongly suggests that Estonia was an important transit country during the Viking era

According to 23AndMe, I share a DNA segment with Vendel Period Seafaring Warrior VK550 and VK507. Vendel Period Seafaring Warrior VK550
      Genetic Sex
      Male
      Time Period
      700 CE to 800 CE
      Burial Location
      Salme, Saaremaa
      Estonia
Vendel Period Seafaring Warrior VK550 was buried in one of two ship burials that were discovered near the present-day village of Salme on the island of Saaremaa in Estonia.
Historians hypothesize that the Salme ships were used to bury warrior-seafarers who died during an armed conflict in the 8th century.
The Salme individuals were buried with a rich assortment of grave goods, including highly decorated swords, arrowheads, and shields with iron bosses. Analysis of strontium isotopes sampled from their skeletons suggest that the warriors may have originally come from Central Sweden. DNA analysis revealed that most of the individuals buried at this site shared genetic similarities to contemporary populations from Sweden, providing further support for the hypothesis that the Salme individuals may have originated from Sweden.
Based on the weapons and other artifacts found among the ship burials, archaeologists dated the burials to the late Vendel Period (650-790 CE); a period in Swedish prehistory, named after another famous ship burial in Vendel, Sweden.
Vendel Period Seafaring Warrior VK550 was buried on the second of the two ships at Salme, which was excavated between 2010-2011. Through DNA analysis, he was identified as genetically male, as were all of the other individuals from this site whose DNA was studied.

When the Vikings existed, there was no Russia. It just didn't exist. Then there was Rus with the center in Kyiv. This country is still called Kyivan Rus. Russians simply stole the name Rus, changed it in their own way and began to call their country Russia. Before that, their country was called the Principality of Moscow. But even the Moscow principality did not exist when the Vikings were there.

Not all Vikings were Scandinavians. Anglo Saxons, Normans and Slavs joined Viking Raiding Parties.
