    Caran D'ache has a product that is like an artist crayon, Neocolor I and Neocolor II. Neocolor I are waterproof and Neocolor II are water soluble. I highly recommend both. Hope this helps

      @@Lilstarnerd yes but even the neocolonial two can be layered without water and they’re very smooth and opaque and delicious. Highly recommend with or without water. Super satisfying to use

      @Lilstarnerd yeah these are definitely what you would have been thinking of. The wax type one is neocolour 1 and the most like a better quality regular crayon. The neocolour 2 is the water soluble one that you can use like a watercolour pencil.

    I believe you've mistaken neopastels for neocolors. Neocolors are a waxed based pastel, aka a crayon. There's a water solvable and a non-water solvable version of those

    I've been tempted by these for a while... I've now got a BIG collection of neocolor II pastels because they've been a lot of fun, so I think I'll stick to those instead 🥰

    the thing about the secondary supplies and how mediums should just work as is is SO REAL lmao like I want the simplest path to getting things on paper or I'm over it lmao that's why I was doing only digital art for a while bc it literally had everything in one place for my lazy a** 😅😅😅 but now that I'm trying to get back to traditional, I also have been eyeing the neocolors
    (everyone's already commented the correction lmao but if I can be so fr I did not even realize you were introducing the wrong thing lmao my brain was like oh yeah neo-whatevers, I've seen those videos lmfao)

    I’ve seen SO MANY artists make a similar mistake. It seems like caran D’Ache has made an odd mistake in naming their products - it’s way too easy to confuse neocolor i, neocolor ii, and neopastels. I’ve even seen RUclipsrs mix up the product names when doing videos - which makes it extra tricky when you want to purchase the correct supply and replicate the techniques you saw in their video. It ends up making you feel like you’re a little crazy when the product doesn’t work the way you thought it would based on videos of someone using an entirely different supply.
    Love what you did with these though.

    oil pastels are easily blended with a blending stump and can get muddy when overly layered, also the paper choice and tooth can affect how they go on

  • @Escherlife

    Neopastel 2’s are totally mixable! Because they are a water based medium, you can rub them on a course surface ie: a plastic cutting board (caran D’ache actually sell these, but you can get one from Kmart at a fraction of the price) just add whatever pigments you want to the board, add water and mix! ❤

    I know everyone else has told you, but here’s some more clarification… Neo color wax, pastels, neo color water soluble wax, pastels, and neo pastel oil pastels. Those are the three that people often confuse. The wax versions have a pointy tip and act a lot like wax colored pencils. of course one of them is water soluble. I really like the texture of the oil pastels, but they do have a different way of working than most other oil pastels so I’ve had to adjust for that when I use them :-)

    13:30 Totally agree on the "supplies should work as is" ideology! I refuse to add solvents to coloured pencils or use brushes with acrylic markers. Especially the latter! If I wanted to work with brushes and mix stuff on palettes, I'd have bought acrylic paint, not markers. I mostly use oil paints without solvents & mediums and have no issues.

    I’ve grown up using Neocolor I, Neocolor II and Neopastels (Neopastels are my favourite oil pastels, more so than Sennelier. NB oil pastels have different firmnesses - these are firmer) so it hurt my heart when you talked about them as a passing fad at the beginning 😂.

    • @gertietheduck
      @gertietheduck Месяц назад

      Also a tip: you can indeed create portraits with oil pastels, but you need some extra tools such as the tip of blending stumps for the small details. Neopastels are my favourite because of how gloriously blendable they are. Also they work on almost any paper unlike softer pastels. I find softer artist grade oil pastels (Sennelier/Paul Rubens) too much like smearing grease around. Mungyo Gallery (NOT a the student grade version, make sure you get the artist grade one!) are a good Neopastel substitute for much cheaper.

      Oh, and make sure you get the Sennelier oil pastel fixative - it’s magic!!

    From my limited knowledge, I’m pretty sure you might be thinking of Carson d’Ache neocolors. They have that crayon tip and are much more waxy than a traditional oil pastel or faber castel gelato, while still remaining creamy. Katie Moody is the first RUclipsr who comes to mind that raves about neocolors. Caron d’Ache makes two kinds of neocolors, 1 and 2. The ones are the original, wax-based artist crayon, and the twos are an aquarelle crayon that can be blended out with water or left as is (I think they still refer to them as wax crayons/pastels on their site, though). The names are pretty confusing - your sticks are labeled ‘neopastel’, which is unfortunately rather similar to ‘neocolor’. I haven’t tried oil pastels, but I love my neocolors; I’m glad the oil pastels weren’t too much of a let down. Hope this helps!
