It doesn't matter if you have a Buck 119 or the Gordon copy (I have both) it is not difficult to snap the tip off of them. I have known many people who have had the Buck 119 with a snapped off tip. You can easily re-profile the tip and it still looks killer and is actually stronger because the metal is thicker at the point of the break or you can send it back to Buck and they will replace it for you.
Tried it with mine, it didn't break. So what's your point?
@@gunsquawk4443 My point is precisely that...... The "point" of the Buck 119 120 etc. will easily break. The thickness of the blade dramatically reduces at the tip of those knives and it doesn't take much to snap it if you aren't careful. However, if you do snap it there is enough blade out there you can grind a new tip on the knife and unless you know the knife you would never notice it. That is my point.......

It'll break. All bowies generally taper to extremely thin tips. Breakage isn't even a bad thing.

Afew years ago the girlfriend got me a 119 with cocobolo handle. And my only problem with it is, i dont wanna use it. Its such a beautiful knife, so it sits in the safe and every now and then i take it out just to stare at it for abit.
Just get a Fällkneven f1x or S1x or f1x if you live in a cold climate get the pro series way better knives

I've had tips break on all kinds of knives. It doesn't take much to snap them. They are usually pretty easy to fix. The Gordon knife is no stranger to controversy about toughness and durability. But when it comes to giving my grandsons their first fixed blade knife, The Gordon is just fine as an entry knife. Great video and eval.

I have had the buck 119 since I was 13. I absolutely love it, and used it quite a bit. Mind you I’m 48 and it is still going strong

I use to carry a knife similar to that one except it had a tiny red line around the handle in 1972 when I worked for the Dept. of Agriculture as a fire fighter. Our job was to fight forest fires primarily. It was made by Case and the model was called the Cheyenne.

I carve Halloween pumpkins with my Buck 119.
This knife is not designed for prying...due to the shape of the tip. Try that to your $200 knives, and you will have similar result, either shattered or bent, especially high HRC knives. The 7Cr15Mov(?) blade is tougher in general, and can withstand chipping better, but not without its limits. As other here noted that any steel when bent, will induce stress hardening to that area. To bend it back, it is advised to heat the area to relief the stress before bending it back.(a better way maybe to hammer it back agaist the flat surface, rather than the poster's way, which acutally abuses the knife ... I do not see how he can bend it back like that without knowing how much of a force to do so.
You don't reheat a knife to bend it back.. that's not "aDvIsAbLe".. it ruins any heat treatment it may have had, and will anneal the steel to a point where it will never hold or take an edge again.
He did right try to bend it back cold.. if it breaks , you repair the tip on a grinder carefully and keep it cool.
You don't heat blades once their finished... Anything over 3-400 degrees removes temper.. heat the knife and you ruin the whole knife.. instead of just the tip..

I have torture tested several 60-62 hrc blades, and some broke and some didn't.. what matters is tip geometry.. this is why bushcraft knives have stout tips..
The buck 119 design was intended as a camp/hunting knife . To tend to camp stuff like cooking and food prep.. and hunting stuff.maybe light light chopping, preparing fish or game...... That's why it has a fine tip..

When I go in to the woods I carry a few buckets of LAVA and ask The Gods to keep the obsidian buckets from shattering.

You could get 2 of these for the price of a Buck 119, and but it would last longer than the 2 of these knockoffs.

The 100 series belt knives from the 102-124, all of their lockbacks in the 500 series from the 505-500, the 55 112 and 110.
Theres a few imported slipjoint models, the selkirk line, and a handful of inexpensive modern folders.
Out of all of thr knife manufacturers who do offer imports with their name on them, Buck offers the smallest percentage.
I have the Buck because of the materials and construction. And the warrenty is great too. But, my favorite carry knife is my real Marine K-Bar.

5 = .45%-.5% which is about equal to 420HC
7 = .6% to .75%, About equal to 440A
8 ...roughly equal to 440B or AUS 8
9...a bit lower than 440C

Plenty of hollow grind clip point blades out there with broken tips. It's a weakness of the design as much as that particular knife.
He he my old buck 110 lost it's tip gouging a plug out of a Jeep carburetor. It's a combat veteran also and has long been retired. I have a newer one I've used since.

I work at Harbor Freight. That price comparison is common on most of their price tags in the store (at least the ones I have worked at). Go into the physical store and look at the small print on the price tags in the store, they will show how much your are saving if you dont buy the non-harbor freight brand.
After Buck heat treats that 440 steel, they quench it in dragon’s blood. I’m sure that’s how they do it.

Buck's 420HC gets a superior heat treatment from Bos. It's still only 420HC but at its peak performance. It's sort of like a mediocre athlete having their best day and playing the best game of their life in the minor leagues.

Got a 119 buck, and I love it. I bought mine at gander Mt. For about 59 bucks, mabe 15 years ago. Still shave sharp, and in good condition. Great blade for the money.

It just so happened I had to pause this video to make a trip to Harbor Freight and decided to look to see if they had these. They did, $24.99. I have a (circa 2002) Buck 119 I was fondling before I left, the differences I saw were the grind on the Gordon's clip point is a bit more aggressive, this doesn't make much difference to me. The resin handle on the Gordon seemed more matte/gritty than the smooth Buck handle. I think the Buck is better because the smooth resin feels like it's give a slightly better grip than the powdery matte finish of the Gordon. One thing I do prefer about the Gordon was the guard and pommel aren't stacked like the Buck. My Buck's guard kinda slides out of alignment, not a big deal but it bugs me in an OCD way. I looked to see if the pommel is pinned like the Buck but couldn't tell, Buck hides the pin well but you can tell if you look very close, I couldn't tell on the Gordon.
If you're invited to go camping or hunting and need a knife on short notice, there are better options but this will work fine. I just retired my 119 because it's a little too much knife for deer hunting and it rides too high on my belt and the pommel knocks my safety off because I hunt with an old Lee-Enfield. I hope to get a Terava Jaakaripuukko 110 when the budget allows it.
I've got the 140 and it is a great knife - thicker and stronger and longer than a Mora Garberg Carbon with a nicer leather sheath and a slightly more comfortable handle.

One trick with cheap knife sheaths is to take super glue and run over the stitching on both sides. This increases the life of the stitching considerably.
And I've seen some "name brand" sheathes have catastrophic failure of the stitching and other worse problems.
I've owned some good nearly indestructible knives that came with absolute disasters of sheaths. Especially true with some Cold Steel knives. I got a bushman years ago. The knife is still going strong but the plastic liner in the cloth sheath got brittle and shattered like glass when I dropped the knife once. And not freezing, it was an 80 degree day. Not something you'd want to have happen in the field. I'm not really trusting plastic handles either to be honest.
"But, it's real leather, so...". For the sake of this video, a correct comparison would be to compare plywood or particleboard to maple or oak and saying "But, it's real wood", which it technically is, but most people know why one is much, much cheaper AND inferior. Leather is the same way. Leather is not the "bacon" of the materials world. Sausage can be added to and is still called sausage. People mess with bacon and we'll know it's not real bacon. When leather is marked "Genuine Leather", that just means that they couldn't afford to use top or full-grain leather, but instead used leftover leather shavings, bad parts of the hide, minced up into pulp, then formed into Genuine Leather...the exact comparison between particleboard and maple I did above.

Great fish game knife..i use it for a while now.ive had ni problem with it..holds a good edge..maybe buy a small axe.
That what happens when you try to bend it back the wrong way. If you bend your tip don't "try to fix it" by just randomly stabing it and bending it the opposite way. Use a hammer and light taps to pound it back into shape.
That tip looks weak (not sure how it is on the 119) by desing. Hollow gring and the swedge end before the tip so there's no reinforcement. My guess a 119 would bend and break the same way.
Its a great costume piece for a Ghost Face costume as the original knive used was a buck 120. Granted its not as long of a knife but it'll still look the part for sure.
Also the knife was featured on the cover poster of Friday the 13th part 4, Part 7, and Part 8. It is also believed that the knife Jason used to attack Chris in Part 3 was a Buck 120

I've been using my buck 192 vanguard and case xx trapper since I was 10 years old.I've had a buck 119 for 15 years and have never used it because my 2 normal use knives haven't ever let me down.Buy a good quality knife its well worth it
Instead of getting these buck knives get a Fällkneven they are the best survival knives ever made, get the x series for strength and the pro series of you live in a cold climate yes, they are expensive but I have the A1x and the f1xb and I have no regrets I’m going to get the Nl5 soon they are amazing knives
I personally would not have wasted my money on that chinese copy... I bought the real deal (119) when it sold for under 50 bucks... I tried to sharpen a folder for someone made from that cheap china steel...and it would not take an edge worth a damn... It kept chipping and flaking... Buck just doesn't use standard 420 HC steel...they also use Paul Bos heat treat... Which makes them as strong as Chromium steels...and retain an edge like a High Carbon Steel... I Love Buck Knives...I am a Red Blooded American... I don't Live and Work in China...

I don't really see the marketing as deceiving, they're simply saying that you're saving this amount of money by buying their name brand equivalent over the name bran item itself. However, you can buy a real Buck 119 all day at Walmart for around $47 which actually makes this knife less than half the cost of the Buck. Whether or not it's worth it is of course up to the buyer. Very good analysis and informative video though.
My gripe is its not comparable just because it has a similar shape thats all...its not the same knife at all
First I collect knives and have several Case knives which are all hard to sharpen,but that’s ok they are good to look at.Puma use to make a Skinner knife that could be razor sharp ,the last one I could not.Turns out the big knife makers are selling out to Chinese.Their steel is not tempered right,plus it rusts and stains easily.
The harbor freight saving gimmick isn’t new. They have been doing that for as long as I can remember. For example if you look at their adds for things like generators, their predator generators they compare to Honda generators and then they will say save 70% by buying their predator generator instead of a Honda. It’s so dumb, I don’t know anyone out there who is persuaded by these games they play…
There is always going to be someone in the business that says that it's a good idea and sounds good on paper when in reality it isn't

That 7cr17 steel can suffer from brittleness, especially stress hardening, so the broken tip from bending back is not that unexpected.
All steel and iron work hardens like that.

Saw a copy of the 119 on Aliexpress which is probably made by the same factory as the Harbour Freight version. If you want a hunting knife you can get better in a cheaper Buck fixed blade, OK they're smaller than the 119 but it's reliable and will be a good knife years from now.
Walmart has Buck 110 for $59 .. so you're basically saving about half the price buying the harbor freight but the steel and everything is not going to be as good as the buck no way
And you just wasted 4 min of my time talking about what you don't like about Harbor Freight's marketing!
Unless a person is absolutely poor and cannot spend more than $25, then maybe this is the knife to buy. But even then there are better knives around that price with name brand like Sharrade, Cold Steel, Kershaw, (if you catch them on sale). Maybe not the same style but definitely fixed blade with heat treated steel. Like you said, if this knife was $10 or lower, then maybe it might be worth looking at if you are plum low on cash and you need a knife right away to use for a day or two. You would definitely need to sharpen it or regrind it for a proper edge.
If you can't afford anything better, you can always save your money and buy something better. And you can never save money if you are constantly buying junk because you do not have the patience to wait.

Bro what are you talking about? Every company markets like that. Look at Kohl's clothing store, they've done it for decades, they slash a fake price and give out "40 percent off" coupons. And that's just one company, they all do it.
Personally, I don’t consider any stick tang knife a viable survival knife, and don’t consider them true full tang knives either, even if they go all the way thru. But I also don’t consider knives with skeletal tangs (such as Becker) good choices either.
I want solid steel, all the way. The added weight, as well as a little hand shock when and if chopping is a small price to pay for the added strength in my opinion
A quick search for becker BK9 destruction and torture tests will prove you have nothing to worry about with skeletonized handles from that brand . Everyone has a preference and i can respect that but i'd trust a BK9 over a lot of other true full tang knives in it's price range

I would have to agree with you. Rattail tangs or stick tangs as they are referred to at times, are better suited to combat knife blades. For survival purposes, I want a full tang blade.
Among other fixed blades and folders I have two 119, one 110 and a 124 frontiersman (love that one). I checked and my locale harbor freight has one in stock. I may pick one up just ,cause. Throw it in the truck and just have it. If it rust or breaks oh well. It’s certainly a cheap beater for sure.

I bought one of these to compare it to my 119's. if you look carefully at the pommel you can see the pin holding it on just as the real Buck 119 is constructed. Also you can still get a 119 at Walmart for 50 bucks. If they would have used 8CR13mov instead it might have been a better knife.
i checked my local WalMart yesterday and the Buck 119 in the case was marked $69.95. If it had been $50, I would own it!

My go sheath knife is a Cutco made in Olean NY. Lifetime guarantee, and if it’s got a double D (serrated) blade you can send it back to be resharpened once a year for free.
Glad my Wife bought her Buck 119 before the price went up. We both have and carry Buck 110s . Mine is the 110 classic and my Wife has the 110 light . The hf looks ok but I'll stick with my Timber Rattler with its 10 1/2 inch blade . It's been through Hell and is still going strong . All the knives we have as far as fixed blades will out do the hf knives any day of the week .
My Harbor Freight knife has "S35VN" on the blade...... weird.........

So the Gordon knife is actually made of better steel than the Buck knife. 4xx series, xCRxxMOV and AUS steels are pretty comparable-they're just the American, Chinese and Japanese standards, respectively. Alloying elements are all about the same. AISI 420HC (High Carbon), sometimes called 420 Modified, is just 1045 with the usual stuff (mostly chromium) in it to make it rust resistant. Unfortunately, when you buy anything by Gordon, you're throwing dice on how good the heat treat will be. But the 7CR17MOV is around 0.65-0.75% carbon. It's rare anything made by Gordon actually states what it's made of. I wonder if they use that grade for everything. I have their sawback machete, bought it for $5 to use for a weekend project, and absolutely beat the hell out of it. It's still going strong and the sawback actually saws wood reasonably well.
