This piano is on an outdoor stage under a tent at the Scott Joplin International Ragtime Festival in Sedalia, Missouri. I believe the local piano dealer rented the instrument so only they could say for sure what is up with that. But it is some very flat thin foam padding which is taped around the leg. Possibly the movers forgot to take it off in their haste unloading the instrument on the stage.

You can learn performances by ear if you do enough ear-training. You can even take courses in ear training and interval training. You may need to play it back multiple times to get it. I have learned entire complicated rags from 100 year old recordings by playing the recording back enough times (also slowed down; there is software such as "The Amazing SlowDowner" and "Transcribe!" which helps you do this). And I don't have perfect pitch. So it's possible.
