When I first started martial arts I would block further out. But as I learned more and more my defense became smaller and tighter it allows you to block and have your hands ready for consecutive strikes and allows for your hands that which defend you to easily transition to a strike because it's close to your body so it's loaded or semi loaded for a counter strike. I've actually adopted the balintawak blocks to my hand to hand I was taught it by my master who has passed away in September of 2021

@@FMASource I am going to need all the help I can get. Or I’m going to end up with 24 techniques that all end with a ball kick, a head butt or …. Nope… that’s about it.

In fact: Every student (and most Teachers) will swear that THEIR style is the best. It takes lots of years and "thinking about" whats the reality. In every style or concept are weak points and the biggest fail is that over the time the styles were more and more filled with "garbage" just only for to make it bigger and bigger for colorful belts. I like Cuentada very well bec its not that filled with "mambo jambo" from other Martial Arts. I like the short and fast moves without wide twirlings and wide steps. Short way needs short time. Learn hundreds of different moves ist nice i Dojo but not in a serious situation. And GM Taboada is so great, as Fighter and human.

Hey Paulo, I am thinking about training either in Pekiti Tirsia or Balintawak. What should I do? I have heard they are both very different?

I've been training in balintawak for almost 2 years now and I'm a level 2 practitioner of balintawak hopefully good enough to level up to level 3 soon

    Great vid! Quick question please:
Please explain the reason why in Balintawak you “punch” the stick (i.e., punching outward, except with a stick in hand).
Won’t that lead to the hand being a major target of attack for another eskrimador?
I’ve been told that the middle to the end of the stick is the range used to strike with. In other styles I see that the stick is extended further outward while keeping the hand closer to the body in order to keep it from being a target. Am I missing something?

For short, in Modern Arnis its strictly forbidden to make the leg and stick antagonism, means the leg at the sider where the stick is MUST be in front. In Balintawak ist equal, left leg in front, stick in the right hand, who cares...another difference is the rotation of the hip, in MA its all by the arms and shoulders. Balintawak is much more natural i think.

Remy Presas had a Shotokan, Judo, & Small Circle Jujitsu black belts his Anyo do teach torque from the core & incorporated Shotokan techniques. I learned Modern Arnis as an addendum to a Goju Ryu Kenkyukai curriculum, so I learned the modern arnis forms just as I learned the Ryukyu Kobudo Hozonkai forms.
