    I needed a heavy duty sheet metal brake to bend the 1/8" (3mm) thick aluminum that I chose for the crosskart body panels, so I made one with scrap steel angle and tubing, lawnmower seat springs and threaded rod. It's a common DIY design, but I beefed it up for my needs. So far I've bent 1/8" thick aluminum @ 24 (610mm) wide successfully. No signs of stress on the brake, but it took some muscle to do. I'm sure it can bend a 36" (914mm) wide sheet with hydraulics or handle extensions for more leverage. I'm going to have to build a proper steel table to mount it to first, otherwise I'll probably rip the end off the wooden table that it's mounted to now.

    Just found this. I like the fact you use tools such as what I have and build a super functional brake. Really dig the use of step bits for those big holes even on thick steel - never thought of that. Cheaper than a mag drill and bits! I will be doing this! I may make the press piece (that decides the radius of the bend) to be flipped, thus having one side tighter than the other for thinner material. This was inspiring! Thanks much!!

    I've watched a lot of these type of DIY's but you have caught my attention... I do build SOLID stuff, I will build the same as you have and appreciate the HD. GREAT Job

    Thanks for sharing this build. If you want to tighten the radius on the bends, just "sharpen" the close edge of the angle iron, in the same plane as the table top.

      Np. Different sheet metal thicknesses have different minimum radius that they can be bent at, actually. The minimum radius is the smallest radius that a metal can be bent to where cracks begin to form in the fibers on the outside face of the bend (hence part of the reason why I tried to show an up close shot of the long bends on my crappy camera). The minimum radius for 3003 1/8" thick aluminum (like what I'm bending) can be anywhere from 0.5t to 1.5t, as in 0.5 to 1.5 * the thickness of the metal being bent (1/16-3/16"), depending on the temper. Thinner metals can have smaller radius bends, while thicker metals will have a larger radius. Not a huge concern for cosmetics other than creating more work to finish the sheet (depending on the goal I guess), but the min bend radius should be considered for structural purposes. I recommend that folks make different clamps with different radii on the leading (bending) edges for different sheet metal thicknesses, or drill some mounting holes in the clamp for modular fingers with different radii. engineering.stackexchange.com/questions/17907/sheet-metal-bending-stuck-on-calculating-the-minimum-radius-required

    I did not see DIE marks after the bend. Much more clean surface finish after the bend. I never knew that about hand brakes.

    Will one of those bend 10 gauge plate. I have some fuel tank shields to make , and they want them from 10 gauge .

    • @JamesBiggar
      @JamesBiggar  Год назад +1

      It can bend 10 gauge aluminum, full width, no problem. I bent all the panels for my buggy with it, all 10 gauge (1/8" thick).
      I've only tested very small pieces of 10 gauge steel, 4-6" wide, and it works fine. But I don't know the limit. I don't think it can bend 10 gauge steel the entire width of the brake. I think that might require hydraulics.
