    The Warm Audio WA273-eq is a hardware unit is obviously based on the famous Neve 1073 unit. In this review and tutorial we'll go over the specs and sound.
    Warm Audio calls it the desert island boutique mic pre amp and it indeed sounds glorious.
    The WA273-EQ can act as mic pre-amp, luxurious sounding eq and as a great DI for instruments like bass and guitar.

    Would you recommend this unit as a mic pre for mic'd electric guitars (57, 421 & 121 mics)?

      Hey Steve! The wa273-eq is great and sound good whatever I throw on it. Even without eq it adds a bit of low and hi end and saturates nicely. I used it on e-guitars with great succes. Be aware of phase when you use the eq on the channels. It's inductor type EQ which introduces very pleasing sounding phase shifts which we love, but it's phase shift none the less.

    I'm trying to set this up in Studio One Professional. I have inserts in/out plugged into my M Audio 8 track channels 3 and 4. I just have to get Studio One to recognize it now so I can adjust the sound in my DAW with the preamp. I can't wait to figure this out. I didn't even know you could do that until i watched this video. Any help you have would be greatly appreciated. I'm subscribed now by the way. :)

      I'm bit confused now, the wa273-eq doesnt offer any remote control and cant be seen in a DAW , it's all analog.
      I dont use the insert, just the input outputs of the unit.
      Soundcard output 3/4 into the wa273-eq line inputs, outputs of the wa273 to the input 3/4 of the soundcard.
      Then you have to route manually or make an external effect via the pipeline xt plugin ( not familiar with studio one)

    I'm interested in this. Are these two pres/eqs matched... for example if you have the controls in the same place for both will it have the gain, same sound? If not are they close?

    • @whitenoisestudio
      @whitenoisestudio  2 года назад +2

      Hey there! They’re absolutely very close. I never tested how much exactly because I use the unit as dual mono input or as mid side stereo unit (with the help of a plugin) but I never noticed any major differences between the channels, actually not even small differences ;-)

    How can you just use the EQ on the mixbus? How should the connection be? Excellent Review!

    • @whitenoisestudio
      @whitenoisestudio  Год назад +1

      I would use external effects or external aux depending on which DAW you use. Otherwise you need to connect the audio out of your daw into the input of the wa273 and connect the output of the wa273 to the inputs of ypour interface. You create a loopback like that. Record the whole mix to a new track or bounce everything.

    Great review, thanks! I have the single channel version and love it. Just a question on the tone switch. I understand that when it’s engaged the impedance is 300 ohms, but most mic manufacturers recommend that the preamp impedance is 4-5 times that of the microphone, any lower than that and the mic is loaded down which reduces the frequency response. For most mics this means the preamp should therefore be set at 1,200 - 1,500 ohms. So I can’t see a use-case for the tone switch apart from degrading the tone! Do you have any thoughts on this?

    • @whitenoisestudio
      @whitenoisestudio  3 года назад +2

      Thanks for watching! Impedance changing is mostly useful for dynamic mics, those tend to react on impedance changes. It’s not a degradation, it does change sound. You have to experiment which sounds best. But the tone control does also boost the gain more.
      I toggle between on and off often with mic recording and when I use the wa273 as external effect.
      Great unit for sure.

      @@whitenoisestudio thanks for your reply. I’ll experiment with it using my sm57, but keep it off when using my condenser and ribbon mics. All the best!

      @@rogerconnick
      Your welcome!
      On condensor impedance change doesnt have any influence due to the way there are built. Can't say for ribbons.
      Have fun with experimenting!

    What camera and frame speed? I like the tracers effect on you hand movment.

    • @whitenoisestudio
      @whitenoisestudio  4 года назад +1

      Hey man thanks. I used 2 camera's on this video. The normal headshots are all panasonic gh4 and the hand closeup is a panasonic fz300. I always shoot 23.98 fps.
      The fz300 sometimes does that tracers effect and I do not do that on purpose ;-).
      It looks like I set the shutterspeed is too low for fluid recording here, although I always set it too double the speed of the framerate ( shutter to 1/50 with the 23.98 framerate, can't go exactly double)

    u should adjust input gain and output and should be in unity? output is too low?

    • @whitenoisestudio
      @whitenoisestudio  4 года назад +1

      Hey thanks for watching! No you don't need to do that. It's about sound, both input and output color the sound in their own way.
      Also if i want to saturate the input I need to compensate the output to not have my converter inputs clipping. This unit screams playing with input and output to get where you want :-)

  • @ryancohenmusic
    @ryancohenmusic Год назад +1

    Is it better to turn the output all the way to max then adjust the gain or the opposite

    • @whitenoisestudio
      @whitenoisestudio  Год назад +2

      Well that depends on your input levels. The neve ''trick'' is to push the input untill it start to distorts and then back off a bit. Output gain for level make up.

      Voxengo MSED probably. It's freeware so that's nice. Put one instance before the wa273 ( as extenral effect) in encoder mode en then the second after the wa273 in decode mode.

    Just bought this unit, I hear a low noise in my recordings. Does yours have the same noise?

    • @whitenoisestudio
      @whitenoisestudio  2 года назад +1

      Hey there, please explain ''low noise''. It's an analog unit so there will be a noise floor. If you have a hum, you might have an earth loop somewhere you might want to check out. Could be your overall power or the unit. If it is a hiss, make sure you dont record to softly.

    • @CoolDali
      @CoolDali 2 года назад +1

      @@whitenoisestudio I think it’s a hiss, can’t hear it when you record loud though. Thanks

    • @whitenoisestudio
      @whitenoisestudio  2 года назад +1

      Ok! Yeah with a neve clone like this it’s : increase input gain until it starts to distort and then backup a bit. This will give you all the saturation goodness you want from a channel strip like this.

    Does 2 channel mean the same as stereo?

    • @whitenoisestudio
      @whitenoisestudio  8 месяцев назад

      Not necessarily. The two channels here are 2 mono channels - each with their own set of controls and they do not influence each other. That said, you can use it as a stereo unit for sure. Stereo uses 2 mono channels - one for left, the other for right side.
