I was there on Metal day. Loved every minute of it, even though it was brutally hot all day long. There will never be another festival like the US Festival. It's sad that more recent generations didn't experience such a magical time. Some of us were lucky enough to have been a part of this monumental event. I wish I could take you all back to this in 1983. No words can truly define how huge this festival was. Just, wow!

I was there also. I used to have a flyer announcing a Van Halen gig at a backyard party. $2 cover and you got a red plastic cup for the beer keg. A bit of history I wish I'd held onto.

Growin' up in Philly during the 70's we got to see all the rock legends. On to So. Cal. for duty on Camp Pendleton. Both US festivals, the Who and many other greats in L.A. and San Diego. Wouldn't trade those times for anything. It's been a great life. Thank you God and to all the artists, promoters, roadies etc. of great music.

Which is why Triumph has released a blu ray DVD from US Festival. I guess the other bands did not have the foresight to do the same???
@@javtimestwo The reason why Triumph had their own DVD separate from the US 83 DVD wasn't a matter of rights. It was a matter of content. One half of their DVD is a documentary on how they put their show together plus interviews with other musicians who went to see the show. In reality, Triumph made the mistake. All of the other acts received royalties from the US 83 DVD, which outsold Triumph's DVD 10 to 1, except Triumph.
It was an enormous amount of money. At least double in today's dollars if not triple. But, Van Halen supposedly took home next to nothing because they put all the money into the production for this one show, preparation for the show in renting rehearsal spaces, transporting their gear, etc all for one performance.

Me too :) Camped in the camping area all three days but only went in on Sunday. Found a wristband for the beer gardens on the ground, which was cool. Spent pretty much all of Ozzy underneath the water cannon.
What an insane line up. Outside of Woodstock 99 (if you are into 90s music like i am) there has never been a wider or better array of music. I personally couldnt do 10 hours of music no matter how much I loved the music. I go to Korn or any modern show and go full on in the pit, I am done after an hour. Was the same in '99 with Woodstock when i was 16. Just too much and too long to rage that intensely and enjoy yourself
Actually If i remember correctly Van Halen made more than $1.3.. Their contract stated that they had to make more than any other act on that festival bill. If memory serves me right anyway

Good thing. The hard rock scene was lame in 1986/87. Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Aerosmith, Whitesnake, Judas Priest, Kiss, Europe ... a total pukefest. Only VH/DLR, Ratt and Dokken were good.

I remember the Monday morning newspaper and it's front page photo of Rob Halford dressed in his black leather and shiny studded vest with cap and whip in hand, with the pic being shot from the back of the stage overlooking him and out into the massive crowd that seemed never ending. It may have been in color as well. Priest put on an amazing performance, as did Triumph, Scorpions, Ozzy, and surprisingly Quiet Riot. Crue had their moments but looked killer doing it, and Van Halen were having too good of a time whilst being overpaid. This event helped catapult Rock and Metal into the stratosphere across the southland like wildfire, and made it great as a teenager to be a rocker at that time.
