I broke the news to you, brother. It broke my heart too, because we both grew up in the Valley during the 80s and like you Valley Skate n Surf was my shop. I grew up in Panorama City and my family were avid roller skaters. We drove by it all the time on our way to Skateland. I pretty much live down the street from Valley Skate n Surf (I mean where it once was) right now and would pop over every now and again. I bought pretty much all my skateboards and decks from there. The one set up I remember the most was a Tony Hawk deck right after they removed that trash bonite, Indy trucks, Oj2 wheels and clear grip tape. RIP Valley Skate n Surf
Sending my condolences.
Skateland which I grew up going to is now homeless "bridge housing."
one of my favourite shows best channels on youtube!! five star documentary and entertainment. top channel.
Wish I could go back to the 80s and be your friend. I didn't visit California until later in life, but it must have been so awesome then.
Great way to start the weekend with one of your great and super awesome videos 🎉🎉🎉
My wife recently took my son to that vintage market at Pierce and they got a few old toys for him and some G1 transformers for me. She told me that one booth had a bunch of Simpsons figures and my son had said he wanted a Simpsons toy. The lady running the booth stood up and told my wife that they weren’t toys. “They’re collectibles,” she said. My wife didn’t bother asking how much, lol.
Thank you so much. I have told my wife about that Carl's Jr and she never believed me. I share we must have had the same childhood in the valley.
Remember when Disney Channel was cool and had only Disney related shows? It was great in the early to mid 80s. Mousterpiece theater was a good one! God I miss those days!!!!
It's that Time Again!!!! These are my favorite videos Kurt. 👍👍 2 Thumbs up Siskel and Ebert Style!
Great episode!
That McDonald’s and Carl’s Jr. brings back a lot of memories for me. Thanks for the trip down memeory lane.
Love this guy. Bummed I'm done with all his videos.
In 1978 I mail ordered & bought my very first Pro Skateboard from Val Surf (G&S Fibreflex, Bennett Trucks, Sims Pure Juice Wheels). I'd love to see you cover that Val Surf location!
Mmmm Cupids. I miss them. We used to call Pierce College “Moo U” because back in the 60’s they had pastures with cattle bordering Victory Blvd and across the street was Winnetka tech AKA the valley occupational center.
My condolences on the loss of the skate shop, Kurt. 😔 There are several locales of my youth where I live that no longer exist. Yeah, unfortunately as time marches on all we are eventually left with is dust and memories.
We had a skate place like your ditch. We called it. "The Trench". Everyone and anyone would be out there. It looked EXACTLY like the place you skated.
VSS closed💔 I bought my first real skateboard there. Rob Roskopp. VSS was owned by Mona and Phyllis. Later sold to Chris Mahoney. Simon mestas was once an employee there. He left to work for 118 board shop. Then DVS/Matix. He passed away recently. Randy worked there as well. Went on to open his own spot. Surf and Safari. The Valley is a giant turd now. Everytime I visit. I leave bummed.
I can feel your pain, Kurt. Get that sign!
I used to go to that auto parts store! I don't remember your uncle, my boyfriend at the time was the one who did the transactions. VERY reputable shop. Such memories, VW days.
These videos remind me of how I miss the Valley. Hope I get back there one day
That line about ppl dressing like Billy Jack made me laugh out loud.
Phil from Reno.
My beautiful valley
Watching this clip brought me back to times of the movie Carwash and episodes of Starsky and Hutch?
Man the Pizza Cookery, what great memories! I used to go as a child to the one in Granada Hills off of Balboa. It's still there, but they updated it and removed the 1970s wood paneling, dark leather booths and saw dust on the floor. It just doesn't feel the same anymore. Some of my best memories as a kid were playing the Ninja Turtles Arcade game next store at Family Fun Arcade then walking over to Pizza Cookery for dinner pretending we were the turtles eating pizza.
You missed the sweet 80's El Camino sitting at the Auto parts store!
Looked like uncle rudy liked to party!! ...nice...
Haha. Little bit
Skating was popular back in the 80’s!
Tony Hawk and Christian Hosoi were tops in skating!
I have a Hosoi hammerhead
Man, that's too bad. I remember a skate shop in burbank called "Fast Lane". Every kid would hang out there on the weekends. Owner would give away free cokes and stickers to everyone.
Filming locations is what I ask for.
I remember that Carl's Jr. I thought that was going to be the new future for all restaurants, then I didn't see it anymore.. I definitely do remember the Colossus burger from Jack in the Box it was really good!!
Right? it seemed futuristic at the time, but no one else did it. ha
Video king would rent those VCR to my parents too I remember that awesome content as always
Man Kurt...I really hope you got that sign bro! 👻🙏🏼🛹
I'm sad the Skate and Surf shop is gone, and I live in Prague, Czech Republic ! Here, all is change also, and this too makes me sad. Anyway. When I see a blacked out Massage Palour .. in the Valley ... I think of that movie "2 Days in the Valley". Actually, The St. George Motor Inn at 19454 Ventura Blvd seen in that movie is less than half a mile from the Tarzana Inn.
Before I even opened the video or read the full title I knew what was up because of the thumbnail. It's a shame to see such places like this one go. I've never been to Los Angeles but I know the feeling of seeing a place you know and have fond memories of go away.
I'm shocked that the ditch has water!
Yes, I went to Pierce College '73-76. I wish I would have gone to the Occupational Center. I got a BA degree instead. What I remember about the intersection of Winnetka and Victory was the archery targets set up on that corner. So that if an archery student felt a little adventurous and homicidal as you drove by you were conceivably a target. Also, Pierce was a 2 year communitiy college offering the 2 year associate's degree. The enrollment when I attended was in the low to mid 20,000. So every year 10,000 students would earn a degree, right. Wrong, when I graduated there were only 800 people eligible for the degree that semester.
Looking forward to the next CHIPS video :)
Back in the late 80’s/early 90’s we had a shop up here in Porterville called Valley Surf and Skate. I always thought the name was kind of odd since we’re 45 miles north of Bakersfield and a couple hours from the nearest ocean. Also they carried only skateboard stuff and no surf stuff.
Green Sector was my skate shop. Thanks for your time and cool Vlogs Kurt. Valley Boys for life.
You did a "To Live And Die In L.A." video?
I've been asking for that, and "Tequila Sunrise" video, so now I'll go look for it.
The keyboard tech and sometimes the keyboardist for U2 went to Pierce College (Terry Lawless)
So I wasn’t sure what a “swap meet” was, but now I realise it’s what we in the UK call a boot fair!
Love your channel.
Awsome vid. In the mid 90s we use to hit the skate shop at the local mall on weekends they built boards right there they had tons really popular place for that scene my older cousin was a well known skater at that time in our area he always took me I felt like royalty walking around with him Lol Kurt you gotta get that sign for sure!
just came across your you tube page at random..your videos are awesome and give me great 80s memories even though im not in your town.your voice is awesome and reminds me of norm macdonald(rest in peace).please keep up the good work !!!!instantly subscribed!!
Oh, those memories. I am also sad about valley skate and surf, bought my first board there (a mike mcgill) to be exact. Also you have an uncle Rudy, and he worked at an auto shop, just like Rudy in BornInEastLA, cool. Love your videos. Thanks for all the research that you do.🙂
7:05 I used to walk to Reseda Elementary on the way home I would stop by that Mc Donald’s nd ask for a cup of water, they tools us to that’s Carl’s Jr on a field trip on 2nd grade
In this video you are near the intersection of Saticoy and Louise. On the southwest corner is a bar "Pogo's." In the late Seventies my mother and her then current partner in alcoholism ran this bar. They gave it up after a car smashed through it. (There used to be a gas station next door, on the corner.) I see now it still exists. It has a website. Back in the Seventies it was frequented by members of the MC gang Satan's Slaves.
I believe there is still The Pizza Cookery in the Valley. It’s on Devonshire and Balboa it’s located next to where the old Family Fun Arcade use to be. There’s a really good Thai place there called Rincome that’s always busy there fyi if your into that it’s been there for years
Is he from the Valley? Yeah, I think so. CHRISSY! How many times do I have to tell you, that if you hang out here, you hang out with DAGGERS!
Great video as always. Great memories even though I lived out in Glendale, but used to go to the valley often and enjoy the many things it had to offer back in the fabulous 80's. I would like to know if you have made locations for one of what I consider, in my humble opinion, one of the best movies talking bout ''Stand and deliver". If you haven't I think would be a great video since was filmed entirely in L.A. Just throwing you an idea. Thaks again for the wonder videos .
Baby Town was also used in Knocked Up
In the 83 4 5 6 7 Colossus burger and the double ultimate bacon cheesier was my all time favorite oh and there crunchy tacos
I went to the west valley upolstery course in 2000 as a high school senior but never finished .....that was a huge mistake it may have changed my entire life......teenagers sure can be stupid, its funny even alot of the occupational school classes are gone ,I think even the auto body.
this city has been on a down hill slide since the early 2000s and thank god we got to experience it before social media took over. Crespi 2005
Rad Video 🤘🏾
Yolanda and Sherman way I used to live there
OMG! What an awesome video!! Had no idea the Pizza Cookery closed! Also…here I am thinking I’m the only child grew up with parents not taking us to any vacation 😢…only place we went to is Disneyland & Wax Museum. If we go to LA, all we did is go to is Chinatown because my parents like the selections better than ones in San Diego. When I got older, my uncle did take us to Vegas. Thank you for your great video again!
Serious fuckin bummer 😞 💔
There's still an H Salt Fish and Chip at the 5 point in North Hollywood, at the Camarillo, Vineland, Lankershim. Across the street from the Unleashed (Blockbuster)
There's also still an H. Salt on Carson Street and Delores Street in Carson that I go to occasionally. The one that I went to in Norwalk closed a few years ago. I was glad to find one over here when I moved here to the South Bay last year.
Kurt's videos remind me of all the cool shops and arcades that have closed down since the '80s and '90s. No record or book stores left in the old Whittier neighborhood, except Lovell's in Uptown. Arcades? Maybe Lost Levels in Fullerton or Montclair. Technology and lifestyle drives the trend of what's around. There's Starbucks everywhere, vape shops, and even cannabis dispensaries now. A Stuft Pizza I went all the time as a kid is now a dispensary! Times have changed and always will.
Chris you live in Carson?
I feel you, valley skate & surf was my shop in the 2000s. Every time I’m in the drive-through at McDonald’s I just look at it like man I miss valley skate 😢. Do you remember a skate shop called Pacific ride skate shop on Sepulveda and Parthenia . It was across the street from kFC . The skate shop was next to a usps store . This was like in the year 1998,1999,2000s.
The shop had a skate park in the back with ramps and everything..
had that exact model super soaker!
I use to go to that Carls all the time. I remember when it didn't have a drive thru. One of the other issues with the dumb waiter was peoples sodas would fall over inside of it.
I hope you're able to get that sign.
It’s called ‘action figure’ not a ‘doll’ when we tough guys own them! hahaha
Put a sticker on the sign with your contact details and explain you want to buy it, hopefully the fitter who removes it might get in contact as I’m sure it will just be chucked out 😔
Lol😂 cracked me up your like we went cause my aunt had brain surgery, that was our only vacation we ever took lol
Hey did you ever find out what store that Reese went into and got those Nike's and jacket from supposed to be in downtown L.A
It's like dejavu Bro, I swear to you I was looking online for that same exact lamp a couple days ago. My cousin has that lamp in his room in Westchester.
Im not sure what restaurant it was, but it was a fast food place on ventura blvd that had the same automatic drive throu.
Why does it seem almost all actors are short? Are they easier to get on film?? I met Wolfman Jack in 1986, he was more round than tall.
Get that sign…
did you drive or fly to San Antonio?
The way that socal is loosing its 80's culture SUCKS!! Good think vally relics is keeping the dream alive!
Billy Jack 😂 I know exactly what you mean
do you go to Jack in the Box during the E.coli scare?
Is your dad still alive? Is he in any of your vids?
The spicy chicken from Jack doesn't taste the same these days. They were better in the 90s
yuup pierce cracked down on anyone skating on their property
that was probably just a VCP, it would only play tapes
So many memories at that McDonalds, my family would take us there all the time. Everyone skated at that ditch at Pierce, lots of cool graffiti too I remember. Baby Town was there for such a long time, I totally remember it. Next to it was a small Mexican bakery called La Guadalupana that had amazing fresh Mexican pastries and sweet bread. You could see the baker (I think he was the owner too) making the bread in the back fresh all the time. The place burned down in a fire in the late 90's and never reopened.
Bro get that sign!!!!!
30 miles from the house. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I've looked and I don't see anyone who has done a Demolition Man filming location video. Good opportunity for you.
I was just thinking about that the other day. Or Last Action Hero filming locations.
