Thanks man, I appreciate the tip. Just popped it loose under my '05 focus zx4 using this method. Wasn't a whole lot of room to work with, took me about 2 mins though. Lot to learn from crafty people like Randy. May he rest in peace.
I have an oil wrench, but it was too small for the filter on the old van I was working on. This trick got it off with no hassle, no busted knuckles, and no swear words! Thanks for the tip.
Thanks for posting this, somehow when I moved my oil filter wrench went was lost and I was caught in the middle of an oil change today without it. I used a handkerchief instead and it worked and I was able to finish the oil change. Thanks again
Use this method on my 03 dodge ram today didn't have the room of a motorcycle so I couldn't use the ratchet but just the extension helped. Was still quite tuff but worked thanks a lot! Also use caution if you cannot see, not to twist any nearby wires when tightening the bandana.
Definitely works. I could not find any cloth so used a piece of rope. Also the rope was slippery on the filter so I covered the oil filter with wet cloth then used your method. Definitely worked., thanks
Man you literally just saved my ass. I drained my oil and didn’t have the tool to take out the filter. Was reluctant about the bandana but it worked!!!
I confidently started my oil filter change knowing that I own one of those filter wrenches with the chain. Now I'm stuck looking for a DIY solution because the bloody filter is so close to the engine block, and it is after hours! Modified the idea. I had an old frayed tie down strap, did not have space to twist that much. I slipped a sheet of sand paper underneath the strap to make up for the lack force and it worked a treat!
Hey buddy nice tip!!! In case someone put it the wrong way, an easy fix would be to twist the socket extension one more half turn so that the wrench ends up facing the other way ;)
Worth a try, In my case unsuccessful, .. Last moron over tightened oil filter housing, I'll have to wait for filter cap wrench to arrive. Thanks SloMotion
My dad's best friend when I was young was a man named Randall, and he was killed while doing what he loved - restoring classic cars. This was the early 80s, and most of your everyday folks/backyard mechanics didn't use proper supports. Hell, there wasn't much in the way of safety during those times in general! He was crushed under a car. I just about teared up when you did your dedication. Also, very ingenuitive idea ya have there! That'll definitely come in handy!
Where there is a will there is a way. I used an old braided belt on a used car I bought. I wrapped it around the filter nice and tight placed the belt needle in a hole. Pulled left and it came loose. Unscrewed the rest by hand. Never put a wrench when replacing a filter. Hand tight only. That's all you need making sure it's snug. Using a wrench can cause a leak. Guys put to much pressure with a wrench. The can moves but the gasket stays and that's when it tears away from the can.
I Salute Randy and Yourself, men who both have and appreciate ingenuity, adaptivity, and improvisation are made of the same stuff as myself. I thank you for sharing this simple tip and commend you for honoring a brother lost.
Side note. Just used this technique on my 07 Mack Vision CXN613 for the Air Dryer Filter, which is 5 1/2" in diameter, and the old one was 9 weeks shy of it 5th anniversary of the original recommended biannual replacement date 3/19/18
I was about to drive to the store to get an oil filter wrench and said there has to be something on RUclips thats homemade for that sure enough here i am thanks for posting this lol
Okay I kind of tried this way and it didn't work for me I ended up having to put a screwdriver through my oil filter but through trial-and-error I found it the best way as far as if it's going to come off via not resorting to the screwdriver way I make sure it's long enough that goes all the way through the oil filter if you use a screwdriver anyhow you know those black rubberized bungee straps I used one of those I stretched it around the filter pulled it tight and wrapped it around itself like a bread tie then grab the area where it was wrapped around like a handle and turn the oil filter it only move just a little bit but that's all you need a little bit at a time and then turn around its off I just figured I'd throw that in there because the rubberized bungee grips the whole oil filter
Thanks man, I was just about to go out and buy a wrench because i took the filter off my wifes car by stabbing it with a screwdriver and losening it that way. It works but is dirty, so again thanks for this cleaner, cheaper way.
I accidentally modified the technique slightly because i screwed it up at first but after the first mistake, this way took like 0 seconds flat: loop the folded bandana around the filter, half-tie it, put the socket wrench (with the extender already on) on that half-knot, half tie that, twist it a couple times and wrench. (if twisting one way doesn't work out for orientation+leverage, the other way should)
Blah K&N oil filters on Motorcycles. I’ve had multiple friends using the exact same filter and they all pretty much, blew up. Not a serious bomb like explosion, but enough to startle you and make you pull over just as fast as you puckered up. I also go with the OEM products. They were made for a reason and are even a little cheaper. But I appreciate the ingenuity and RIP! 🙏🏽
It was a bitch due to space but it works like a damn champ. If you're not too lazy to reposition it when you run out of room that it. You saved my ass thank you sir
My bleeding oil filter is stuck and I bought an oil filter cap to use with my ratchet tool but it's not working. My problem is the space to work in using tools to turn the filter. But great hack
Cool tip but, do I use a blue bandana if I'm a crip?
No you don't want to ruin a blue one.
Oh man, that shit literally made me laugh out in public!
😂🤣🤣😂😂
♿️
Ahahahahahhwhw czzzzup

Randy may be gone but he's still helping this world through you. A prayer for your friend and thanks to you both! 👍👏🌼
I have an oil wrench, but it was too small for the filter on the old van I was working on. This trick got it off with no hassle, no busted knuckles, and no swear words! Thanks for the tip.
Worked perfectly when I couldn't find my oil filter wrench! 2012 Ford Focus. Thanks!!
I just did this with some marine rope on a 2009 CBR600RR... I can't believe it worked. Thank you man! Life saver.
Thanks for posting this, somehow when I moved my oil filter wrench went was lost and I was caught in the middle of an oil change today without it. I used a handkerchief instead and it worked and I was able to finish the oil change. Thanks again
Nice dedication man. Giving this a try on my bike now.

Thanks so much just took out my oil filter using your method. helped a lot, that darn thing was on there TIGHT!
That did the trick man! I did use a strip of a non-slip tool mat drawer liner to help keep it from slipping. That that did it, thanks!
thank you!!! I was struggling really bad but this worked!
Thumbs up , the dude left the world but his idea lives on . RIP
RIP? Rest in peace?

This worked perfectly for removing the housing on my whole-house water filter!!! Thanks so much!!
Lmao literally the same situation I was in.

Dude! Thank you this was a lifesaver.
Thanks dude. Worked GRATE on my Subaru Crosstrek
I confidently started my oil filter change knowing that I own one of those filter wrenches with the chain. Now I'm stuck looking for a DIY solution because the bloody filter is so close to the engine block, and it is after hours!

Hey buddy nice tip!!! In case someone put it the wrong way, an easy fix would be to twist the socket extension one more half turn so that the wrench ends up facing the other way ;)

this is nice if you have alot of space to even fit the bandana around properly. if you fit it. good luck about the rest
alright gonna try this with my BLACK and YELLOW bandana LK.
I'll try this with an abaca rope. Will let you know if I succeeded.
i got a stuck oil filter in hard tight space
I wish I had the room to make those turns...the oil filter doesn't usually stick outside so we can grab it like that.
Nice effort, though.
Hey man, I`m truly sorry for Randy ) Thanks for the video )
This helped me out so much. Thanks a lot.
Thanks bro for your help and condolences to Randy. Wish I had a friend like Randy . However I got you now 😊 👍
I am going to try this trick, if it works I will be your subscriber
It was a bitch due to space but it works like a damn champ. If you're not too lazy to reposition it when you run out of room that it. You saved my ass thank you sir
Thanks buddy quick easy 👍 RIP Randy.

Good video. I'll try this trick tomorrow, hope it saves me a few €uros... Thank you my friend!
I drove a long screw driver through both sides and used like a tire iron but this is less animal.
Haha! Great idea, you caveman.
Thank you sooooooo much! RIP to your friend ♥️🙏🏻
I bet this works great under the hood of a '65 Impala...
