Autodesk is the Godzilla of the 3D software industry. They either ate, assimilated or destroyed Alias, Wavefront, 3D Studio, SoftImage, Topaz, Electric Image and many others. I am sure an argument can be made that they had an influence on the end of SGI as well.

Going against the grain in the comments here but the way I see it it's early days. Bifrost dropped into Maya in 2019 and was super beta and stayed in beta for a while. Houdini took years and years to be where it is now, there is no comparison to be had, Houdini is incredible but was born in 1996 ! that's 17 years of development . The bifrost team is small (but mighty) and it's moving forward constantly with allot of ground to cover. It's been a game changer for the work I can offer clients without leaving Maya. AD hasn't killed Bifrost off at all and I don't know what gave you that idea. From where I see it it's the opposite. P.S thanks for showing my work if you had reached out I would of given you something more high res to work with dude.

Bifrost is not an independent software, it is just a function of Maya, a new component. Maya's first release was in 1998. If you have to compare development years, you should compare Bifrost to Houdini's KineFX, VOPS, or Solaris USD.

I don't think enough research has been done in the making of this video, and I'm not sure if the others who comment and complain about Autodesk have ever tried to use Bifrost to see what exactly it offers and what it can do. bifrost is ahead of its time in many areas but sadly autodesk is not really good at advertising, so most people don't even know what it can do.

Autodesk is the biggest villain of the CG industry. 3d studio max was the spark that ignited my love for 3D back in the 90's. Today however every software from Autodesk is like the remnants of the long gone era. VFX are made in amazingly flexible and cheap to maintain Houdini. 3D motion graphics is made mostly in affordably priced Cinema 4D and rendered in super fast GPU powered Redshift or Octane. And there's the holy grail, the hero that has risen like the phoenix from the ashes - Blender 3D. Blazingly fast developing 3D package that is completely free to use for everyone. It has two amazing rendering engines. It has ever evolving, powerful tools and the best community there is. Plus all creative add-ons are expanding the capabilities of this software immensely. Autodesk is the greedy company stuck in the past...

I was working with Naiad when it was acquired, we had a visit from an Autodesk rep who told us it was to be discontinued publicly but they would support the studio if they were using it in production with bug fixes etc. Good intentions but it was three years before bifrost appeared and several more years before it was actually comparable to Naiad.

  • @elconquistador3340
    @elconquistador3340 Год назад +5

Actually technically Naiad has nothing to do with Bifrost, what they've acquired is the team, Bifrost is a completly different system and much more faster and modern.
Also the pyro solver is much more advanced then any solver out there, it's a next gen combustion solver, not even houdini has that, though WETA has something similar (you can read the paper about it for more information).
Still lots to do because they are aiming to have everything in Bifrost, so it's really not true at all that they are not working on it, USD which is a huge chunk is already running inside Bifrost as an authoring USD tool

sadly people now just act like it will make them look "Cool" to spread hate toward Autodesk, even a channel like this that I was hoping to be different than other and have more reliable information is now following the same trend, bifrost came with a lot of revolutionary tools and yet instead of featuring all the techs it brought to industry, you decided to just focus on the software that was "Killed", and its really interesting that people use this word, because if they just say they hired the team and give them the time and resource to work on a bigger project it won't make autodesk look like a monster, they may even sound like good people who care about their software and customers. but lets just make it autodesk the software killer and then we have our cool little angel "blender", and how funny it is to pointing to blender in this video and saying it receive better vfx update than bifrost.

Houdini’s modeling, scene management and animation tools are ass and they always have been. This is the primary reason they’ve always been well behind Maya in adoption.
Niad was just water simulation but not it’s a full end to end physics and simulation framework for all physics systems.
While I hate Autodesk as much as the next person I realize from practical experience how much more useful Maya is than a lot of other tools in a production environment, which is why it is the industry standard.
Autodesks’s Entertainment division doesn’t make them much money, which is why they went subscription.
I wish Apple would get off the sidelines with 3D and adopt 3rd party GPUs and acquire AD’s Entertainment division among other companies and just end the tyranny of subscriptions. It would better for everyone.

it's not about looking hip, it's about showing all the important information in one page and everything you need is within your sight.
the last thing you want is the Menu that was hidden in 5 Click indented menu tucked somewher just because you want your UI to look clean.
also maya script is customizeable, and can be put within your reach.
sometimes boring UI gets the job done, and in this case, a 2010 looking UI icon apparently was easier to locate because it had a distinguishable Visual Cue,
if you can access it right away, you can develop a muscle memory for it, and your workflow will be Crazy fast.

Autodesk failed to build a good interface. Same thing with MASH... Autodesk is king in making a horrible integration. I dont know why, because core maya is easy to use for artists. And it is build for artists....but the newer stuff Is totally not intuitive. Even houdini is way more intuitive than Bifrost.

The information is more or less accurate until autodesk adquisition, from here you do a huge mix up of things not related. After autodesk adquire naiad, it was implemented as bifrost (a fluid solver without nodes). But after this, autodesk was working on project amino, a full nodal system for all types of simulations. Marcus, who was the creator of bifrost was in charge of this new nodal system that was independent, but hookup inside maya. For whatever reason they decided to call project amino “bifrost” the same name they used for the naiad port. Funny history is that the actual bifrost you show here has all types of solvers ( mpm, smoke, vdbs, particles,…) except fluids. It also its the base for USD manipulation in naya. However as you pointed out the latests updates has been a little “boring” in terms of simulations.
