The issue pertains to personal data: using payment instruments exposes us to the risk of data leakage that has been stored in the cloud infrastructure of the service provider. If we sign up for a one-year subscription, who can ensure that the card data we registered is secure? Who can remove the data? Who can ensure that the data has been erased when we decide to unsubscribe? Who knows? Or perhaps we will still be billed even after we've stopped subscribing? In the meantime, the payment plan is not made clear, necessitating questions to the issuing bank. So that we have to ask the issuing bank that issued the credit card we have already registered to change the card again? This kind of recurring payment is at risk of abuse or fraud.
I agree that they switched to subscriptions for the money. But they did it because no one else wanted to buy their software. Why should I buy a new version if it is no different from the one I'm working with?
this monthly subscription also help to collect monthly data, the problem with perpetual license is that after owning the software use can use it offline as well and hence it is impossible to collect data. who knows how this data is used. i can say this becuase the size of these software is grown enormously just like size of our smartphone apps which indicate a sign of sophisticated data collection code without providing much extra.

But they will pay for that in the future because this is still a competitive marketplace. Especially engineering CAD software. For example Alibre, a CAD that I use and love in my company, has vowed to still provide a perpetual licence at incredibly competitive prices to anyone who wants it. I expect down the line, when people become too annoyed by this practice, someone will start perpetual licences again just to blindside the competition.
For us it's a hell as we are advised to keep the same version within our production, and we endup being forced to update too often, that crates issues in the pipeline
Not just 3D software but every software is becoming subscription based nowadays for the sake of making it more accessible. But why? It was explained greatly by the CEO of Blackmagic in the Resolve 18 release presentation. It's because SAAS (software as a service) is a booming industry in Silicon valley now and venture capitals care more about locking customers in, as the company values are calculated based on the profit estimated from customer overtime. But it's very ironic since the non subscription based softwares were first to support M1 native than subscription based softwares.
I think someday, there comes a point where companies reach the limit of what they can afford in terms of subscription-based services that they rely on. I see a clear trend towards open source applications being used more and more in the business world. Companies will join forces and financially support the respective developers of the open source projects. Presumably, it will be the economic and industry standard that open source projects are financed by establishing development departments that have a legal body, i.e. are established as a company and are financed through donations from the various industries (similar to what we know from the 'Blender Foundation' who is developing Blender). Incidentally, this trend will spread to the technical hardware sector in the global economy: Open source GPU/CPU, printer, camera, monitor, headphones, and so on. So we will move towards an economy where only giant tech companies will survive, and proprietary products will be offered, and the rest of the economy will focus on "freer" products and services that have emerged from the open source projects.
I think we are already to that tipping point, people are suing autodesk over killing their software and converting it into subscriptions when they bought it; In addition, some of the subscriptions on adobe or autodesk are stupid expensive, like, really stupid expensive; to the point where your profit margin is killed if you are a freelancer that isn't really popping off in the market, basically causing you to break even, or even lose money. It is pretty heinous really that these companies think we want this. There will be an AI apocalypse+blender will conquer all the subscription vampires if it keeps going at the rate it is. The only other one I expect to triumph is Houdini, but I can buy it outright unlike other programs.
yeah the reality is that all the behemoths of 3d other than houdini and unreal are being slowly outclassed by free software, and I can even use cinema4D's renderer in unreal without any fee@@dimigaming6476
As of today most 3D software (outside of Blender & other FOSS), that are exclusively perpetual are the ones who have income from a software specific content marketplace such as Reallusion Iclone, Daz studio or the vestigial Poser. Today it is nearly impossible to have a steady income from selling only perpetual software seats unless your 3D/VFX application is doing something so unique that it is vital to a large industry that itself is growing enough each year to require new seats. Subscriptions were inevitable.
Not true.. Lightwave is still on perpetual license, and that despite new owners and developers. Embergen (specific) is also having a perpetual license, but with prescription options for maintainence. Terrain generation tools are mostly perpetual.
The other reason why many companies like or even prefer subscription models is probably due to taxes. For some, monthly subscriptions can be claimed at a 100% deduction whereas an perpetual outright cost of thousands might have to be amortised over a couple of years.
even for one time time user/freelancer, it is very hard because you need enormous time to learn the software and then earn from it. even after that not just for one subscription but of different ones. Hence, blender is best because you can start for free and once you earn enough, you can pay for addons to speedup your work, with time those tools gets updated and you dont have to pay for upgrade.
yeah like right now you are going to go into the hole thousands of dollars without even doing a course if you buy the software as a subscription every month; it is really stupid that the companies are being allowed to get away with this, us as consumers need to boycott these companies
they are not dependent on you but they charge from large studios and production who will still happy to pay as they are accustomed to old pipeline atleast for 5 years from now, later they may adapt blender and in meantime, they may xport some of their work for freelancers as well@@psychoticgiraffe
The way I evaluate where I put my money (and not) is dependent on how much time does it save to use said program, Blender is extremely powerful for being free and can often be fairly similar in terms of time it takes to create said project in comparison to maya albeit depending on what I am trying to make as geonodes are amazing with blender but animation is great on maya. But other software coming out now such as Embergen which is real time pyro simulations it just makes sense to drop money on that over something like houdini. Yes you can do pyro in blender but no it is not worth the pain. Houdini is and probably will always be the best but compared to real time its a tricky weigh up but considering much cheaper, embergen just makes sense for me.
Im more than happy to support the company with Monthly payment if im using it and making money with it You should also support blender if you're using it for commercial purposes, don't take it for granted
Like so many others, I hate subscriptions. I own and operate a small 3-D animation studio in Akron, Ohio. Paying a subscription for industry. Standard software is not an option. I always go the route of a perpetual purchase. Though, I must admit, due to my size, I can use this option to great affect. Changing software is always a difficult option but it’s less painful for me than some giant studio in LA. I use bforartist as my primary 3-D package. I use the affinity suite as my 2D package. I also use motion and final cut For my motion, graphics and video editing since Apple software is only perpetual and excellent tools. My point is, at least for small studios, the subscription model can be avoided. In this day and age There are a ton of useful and excellent alternatives.
I do hate subscriptions. There was a time when I'd rather just pirate the software instead. I used Photoshop and 3ds Max for many years through pirating. However Adobe's Photography plan being $10 monthly was very reasonable and I have no regrets subscribing to that. I do see they raised the price more recently though. But Autodesk on the other hand continues to keep getting more expensive. I could never afford a subscription to their software at the time. Then Blender 2.8 came along and after some initial struggles, I finally got used to it and I'm now loving it. I do have to note that Autodesk's indie license for 3ds Max and Maya is not quite cheap, but within range to make me think on it. Perpetual software does need to make a comeback. I did buy Substance Painter and Designer on Steam, I like how Adobe does sell perpetual licenses on Steam, gotta give them credit there. They're not being quite as money hungry as Autodesk. I don't think I would have ever subscribed to Substance otherwise. As much as I hate subscriptions, sometimes the price is reasonable enough, same with perpetual pricing. I'm kinda torn.
@@nsevv It is. But $300 for a year subscription isn't as bad as their normal cost. If I was a freelancer and doing paid work, it might be worth it. Blender might be free, but the price of a lot of them plugins add up over time and may end up costing about the same or more as a Autodesk Indie subscription.
Substance at least have perpetual license in Steam, which I use. And many thanks to Blender Developers. However the main reason i use blender is not zero price, the software is the most convenient for my tasks. As well as Unreal due to blueprint system. For other soft I also use Rizom UV do have perpetual license (1 year update than use forever without updates or buy another year of updates if you need, same as for substance) and Marmoset Toolbag which also have perpetual.
With a subscription easy money coming in every month, the producers have no need to make the software better so there is an attractive new updated version to be worth buying.
Drop those subscription based applications and switch to open source software. Not only is it a free tool, you can also host it on your machine. The good ol' days when you purchased something and you actually owned it....
Not all software offers month-to-month subscriptions in every region. For example, if I want to use Maya, I have to subscribe for a full year!! And last time I checked, you could only roll back up to 3 versions with Autodesk, so what if you have a long-form project with a set pipeline, then you need to get special permissions to use older versions? XD
It's not just 3D software :/ Even Clip Studio Paint is doing it and they've had some backlash, but only adjusted it slightly. Also, it has DRM. It's not about piracy, at least I don't think it is, because every software eventually gets cracked and pretty sure big guys like Adobe and Autodesk don't care - just that they get the most from their customers all the time.
yeah its insane that companies think we have the money to afford their nonsense, sure they do nice things for students but even students can't always afford an extra 100 bucks or whatever because it might put them dangerously close on a housing/rent payment(another thing that is heinously expensive in some states) I hope piracy bankrupts autodesk or they get bought by epic and merged into unreal and their tools are offered in some capacity for free
If it helps, you can get Autodesk, Maxon, and Substance for $10 if you are a student. Companies are more charitable these days when it comes to people who want to learn it. All you need to do is get qualified and not use these tools for commercial purposes.
@@psychoticgiraffe Many years ago when I attended online animation courses, I only saw one student that submitted the work with water mark overlay. I guess everyone else was using cracked version. When that student asked where to get maya, the mentor was trying very hard to tell him to get a cracked version without saying the cracked version, but he didn't get it and used learning version instead...
We are in capitalism and company owners don't care about the well being of the artists. The prices are completely insane. Hope Blender keep growing and remain free. Is enough the paid addons.
If I could have just afforded to buy Photoshop CS6 before they went to subscriptions I would have saved about $5,000 before I cancelled my adobe account. What's worse is instead of improving photoshop to compete with Substance Painter (which you could buy at the time) they just bought it and added it to their list of subscriptions. I say we have a national 'Cancel your subscription day' and see just how cheap the software gets.
Yeah, bullshit. If you paid for PS since the beginning of the CC there's 0 chance you've paid anything close to 5k. Moreover, if you need photoshop only, you could've taken Photography plan for 10 bucks per month. And very few people do not update their software for 10 years. So it's on you for 1. not being able to do a simple calculation 2. not using software that fits your needs.
Adobe made more money in 2023, because the worldpopulation is growing, not because they changed to subscription only... Autodesk have need to rise the subscription fees, because they have loose clients due to subscription only... What for shure is predictable by subscription system, if a company change to subscription-only is, they will earn less, because they will loose theyr clients...
Hey! Awesome video I really like your content. I just wanted to ask you if you could tag me in the video description regarding the thumbnail art, because the Avatar face that you have is done by me. Thank you!
Studios don’t care. As much as people won’t like this I hope Apple eventually acquires all these 3D software companies and adopts 3rd party GPU compatibility. At the end of the day if profitability is rooted in hardware sales instead and everyone in 3D buys a Mac or 2 to get inexpensive licenses for all the tools wee need it’s better for everyone, studios, freelancers, developers and hobbyists.
Only for money. If you sell your product you will earn money only for one time but if you rent your product you will earn money until you sell that product.
I absolutely refuse to rent software. Not giving anyone access to my machine the way most of these subscriptions require, and at least with a perpetual license, you're not at risk in today's politically-charged environment of a vendor suddenly deciding that they don't like you, cancelling your account and bringing your work to a screeching half until you either bend the knee or figure out a work-around.
Subscription based software has lead to innovative software turning mediocre in most cases. I have subscription fatigue. The thing that keeps them going is being industry standard. Until that changes, I am stuck.
The very big thing you are missing and clearly have short memory of…. back before the subscriptions. - adobe was like 1500.00 usd to start.. then you had to pay 600/yr for maint. - THey were loosing money and not able to pay developers for good updates. and also since people were only buying occasionally..they couldn’t reliably update the products.
I'd go back to that any day though, I'd rather be in the days of spending a few grand on software that is industry standard for 10+ years and still be alllowed to use it after that time ended, sorta like back in 3ds max r3.1 that was my favorite version of 3ds, It was expensive back then but I didn't care.
Blender - free Davinci Fusion - cheap perpetual Those are the tools of my profession These other software companies can keep their overpriced software payment plans
I want to pay for some features, eg: I want Blender to charge everyone for all addons but for the price they will supply support. Instead your addon doesn't work so it's the addon's fault not Blender, Something is wrong with your Blender ask them to help you. Being caught in the middle is the prime reason Blender is not pro software.
Well i would like to comment on this, blender is open software if i know this correctly, you can learn programming and fix your plugins.... Basically this is your work, not their... In the worst case you can hire some programmer in blender and fix these stuff on your own... Or just stay on the version that works with all your addons (this is a common tactic) Best regards, hope this helps sort your problems with plugins
@@DEVconstructionLTD In my case the new addon destroyed my file also the copy and paste of files also transferred the infection to a blank file. Instead of being creative for a month I wasted a month.
Yeah I understand really well.... well in unreal, you upgraded to new version, then new bugs are introduced.... You want the reverse to the old version, you can't... We need backup projects to be able to back/restore it because you can't see bugs immediately (lesson learnt)
@@DEVconstructionLTD It's like oh suddenly I can't keyframe any shape keys... what the what? It's an addon to import of a mocap directly as a rigify rig. Sure.
I am very happy with the subscription model and most artists should be too. For students or people entering the field it lowers the cost of entry. You used to need to buy a perpetual version of the student license that couldn't be used for commercial use. Now you can get free or highly subsidized student versions of the software. Next, this gives developers a constant revenue stream that leads to more updates which leads to better products. This is while it is cheaper than than upgrading every 4-5 years. You save man hours from training, you save man hours from additional productivity from new features and you actually save money by subscribing vs buying the software and upgrading. I actually ran the numbers and it was a rather significant savings just in the cost of software. The reality is that most people that are smart about money do this which is why these companies move to subscription. None of the big developers just went subscription they all offered subscription and perpetual license and they noticed that their customers overwhelmingly went subscription it smoothes out the revenue flow for the company using the software and for the company making the software. Also while companies definitely try to maximize profits I don't think people realize how much time and effort goes into software production and how many features are added and how easy adding a feature can break the code base.
nobody should be happy with the subscription model, it cuts into the profits of all freelancers drastically, I still use some ancient version of 3ds max from time to time solely because I don't have to pay anything for it, and I never will because its fully unsupported by autodesk due to the age. Don't allow subscription vampires to destroy our society, we have enough of this already, reality is most of us can't afford this, for us 100-1000 a month might be a death sentence that makes us miss rent/housing payments, if freelance work isn't steady.
@@psychoticgiraffe My first thought is if you can't make enough to survive you should fine another line of work. Not everyone is good enough to make a living doing art. No shame in that. The pay rate for a 3d freelancer is $33/hr and if you are good it should be easy to bring in about $70K/yr. Lets say you use Maya, Substance Suite, Zbrush, Marvelous Designer and Houdini. Which really should allow you to do anything you need to do in 3D and I would argue you don't need to use all of them but let's say you do. Maya is $1875, Subtance is $219, Marvelous is $280, Zbrush is $359, Houdini is $269. So yearly total is $3002 or $250ish a month or less than $10 per day. All of which would account for 5% of your revenue. Not to mention all of this is tax deductible reducing your tax burden and if you are a good 3D artist can actually lower your tax bracket. Add on top of tht that new software adds new features that allows you to work more efficiently. Substance just dropped a 3D paths tools. That tool alone saves me about 2-3 hours of work on most characters I model. so it means I can take that many more commissions which means I can make that much more money. And thats just a recent example. All of these softwares are adding new features that make me that much faster which makes me that much more money as a freelancer. I have never had problems with the cost of these subscriptions. I actually jumped on board because on average it saved me money on the software while getting me better software with more frequent updates and improving productivity.
_I believe we are meant to be like Jesus in our hearts and not in our flesh. But be careful of AI, for it is just our flesh and that is it. It knows only things of the flesh (our fleshly desires) and cannot comprehend things of the spirit such as peace of heart (which comes from obeying God's Word). Whereas we are a spirit and we have a soul but live in the body (in the flesh). When you go to bed it is your flesh that sleeps but your spirit never sleeps (otherwise you have died physically) that is why you have dreams. More so, true love that endures and last is a thing of the heart (when I say 'heart', I mean 'spirit'). But fake love, pretentious love, love with expectations, love for classic reasons, love for material reasons and love for selfish reasons that is a thing of our flesh. In the beginning God said let us make man in our own image, according to our likeness. Take note, God is Spirit and God is Love. As Love He is the source of it. We also know that God is Omnipotent, for He creates out of nothing and He has no beginning and has no end. That means, our love is but a shadow of God's Love. True love looks around to see who is in need of your help, your smile, your possessions, your money, your strength, your quality time. Love forgives and forgets. Love wants for others what it wants for itself. Take note, love works in conjunction with other spiritual forces such as faith and patience. We should let the Word of God be the standard of our lives not AI. If not, God will let us face AI on our own and it will cast the truth down to the ground, it will be the cause of so much destruction like never seen before, it will deceive many and take many captive in order to enslave them into worshipping it and abiding in lawlessness. We can only destroy ourselves but with God all things are possible. God knows us better because He is our Creater and He knows our beginning and our end.
I think we are already to that tipping point, people are suing autodesk over killing their software and converting it into subscriptions when they bought it;
In addition, some of the subscriptions on adobe or autodesk are stupid expensive, like, really stupid expensive; to the point where your profit margin is killed if you are a freelancer that isn't really popping off in the market, basically causing you to break even, or even lose money.
It is pretty heinous really that these companies think we want this.
There will be an AI apocalypse+blender will conquer all the subscription vampires if it keeps going at the rate it is.
The only other one I expect to triumph is Houdini, but I can buy it outright unlike other programs.
Thank you Blender and the team! 🙏🙏🙏
Miss the good old days where companies spread cracked versions on the market instead of marketing :D Artists need software to improve...
those days are coming back, watch piracy go through the roof and autodesk cry blender tears
@@psychoticgiraffe i know people with C4D, Maya, the entire adobe suite, and marvelous designer. Yarr!
yeah the reality is that all the behemoths of 3d other than houdini and unreal are being slowly outclassed by free software, and I can even use cinema4D's renderer in unreal without any fee@@dimigaming6476
I think that the lack of innovation makes it ridiculous that they switched to subscription, its like subscribing to a piece of burnt toast.
Last time I checked, Blender wasn't. It never will be. So it isn't "every" 3D application.
even for one time time user/freelancer, it is very hard because you need enormous time to learn the software and then earn from it. even after that not just for one subscription but of different ones.
Im more than happy to support the company with Monthly payment if im using it and making money with it
You should also support blender if you're using it for commercial purposes, don't take it for granted
Ton Roosendaal to Autodesk: Hold my 🖱️
*captain jack sparrow music plays in the distance*
Let's hope epic bought houdini, they already invested in sidefx, i hope we can get free houdini indie
thank goodness for Blender. can i get an Amen!!!?
Amen.
Autodesk 3dsmax indie is only $300 but still quite expensive.
True. I have subscribed to every Blender youtube channel. it is truly subscribtion based!
XD
Thank god for Blender
blender is all you need now..
It's not just 3D software :/ Even Clip Studio Paint is doing it and they've had some backlash, but only adjusted it slightly. Also, it has DRM. It's not about piracy, at least I don't think it is, because every software eventually gets cracked and pretty sure big guys like Adobe and Autodesk don't care - just that they get the most from their customers all the time.
blender, unreal engine, quixel, thank you for existing.
Honestly, This just promotes Piracy by adverse effect. A lot of people just can't cough up the money.
yeah its insane that companies think we have the money to afford their nonsense, sure they do nice things for students but even students can't always afford an extra 100 bucks or whatever because it might put them dangerously close on a housing/rent payment(another thing that is heinously expensive in some states)
I hope piracy bankrupts autodesk or they get bought by epic and merged into unreal and their tools are offered in some capacity for free
When that student asked where to get maya, the mentor was trying very hard to tell him to get a cracked version without saying the cracked version, but he didn't get it and used learning version instead...
different between craked one subscription one can you explain
When you need to work with multiple of theses at once you are very screwed price wise it's just impossible to afford all these subs at the same time.
Yes, it has to do with money. I believe it has to do with control. Most people who do 3d software do not have the money to spend...
Blender3d is still Free.
Electronic delivery/updates and subscriptions killed innovation. Greed is at an all-time high.
Relentless corporate greed? Is that the answer?
I call it blackmail ware -to use it you have to pay, and pay, and pay the moment you can't pay anymore you are gone.
Blender
We are in capitalism and company owners don't care about the well being of the artists. The prices are completely insane. Hope Blender keep growing and remain free. Is enough the paid addons.
Because you'll own nothing and you will be happy...thats the quote of the upcoming future. Everything will be suscription based.
Subscription is the reason why I use Affinity instead of Adobe.
It would be nice if you could start crediting the artists who’s work you are using in thumbnails and the video clips you are showcasing in yours.
The answer is: To hold back creative indie devs making really good games and being pain in the ass for large monopolies
Blender ftw!
Can you make a video about hair simulations?🙏🙏
Hey! Awesome video I really like your content. I just wanted to ask you if you could tag me in the video description regarding the thumbnail art, because the Avatar face that you have is done by me. Thank you!
One born every minute.
It's just greed, pure and simple. No one should encourage it.
boycott these companies
Studios don’t care. As much as people won’t like this I hope Apple eventually acquires all these 3D software companies and adopts 3rd party GPU compatibility.
At the end of the day if profitability is rooted in hardware sales instead and everyone in 3D buys a Mac or 2 to get inexpensive licenses for all the tools wee need it’s better for everyone, studios, freelancers, developers and hobbyists.
I will say I am glad I have Zbrush software before the subscription model but uh.... I use blender a lot more and I am glad it's free :D
glad that houdini has free version
Only for money. If you sell your product you will earn money only for one time but if you rent your product you will earn money until you sell that product.
Isn't anything easy anymore?!
Why everybody Is Moving to Blender Now ? That was your question, right ?
Everything Is Subscription Based Now😥
Subscription based software has lead to innovative software turning mediocre in most cases. I have subscription fatigue.
The thing that keeps them going is being industry standard. Until that changes, I am stuck.
Coz they adapt the japan society where everything can be rented and those system works.
Blender users wet dream becoming reality
3DCoat will always be perpetual :)
Famous last words. Just wait until it changes hand one way or another.
^this
I want to try this out so bad! I believe it's better than Painter right?
The very big thing you are missing and clearly have short memory of…. back before the subscriptions. - adobe was like 1500.00 usd to start.. then you had to pay 600/yr for maint. - THey were loosing money and not able to pay developers for good updates. and also since people were only buying occasionally..they couldn’t reliably update the products.
Also you can write its cost off on your taxes
And they’ve stopped improving products. Only reason I still use Adobe is InDesign.
Never have and never will pay a subscription for software.
Blender - free
Davinci Fusion - cheap perpetual
Those are the tools of my profession
These other software companies can keep their overpriced software payment plans
I'm Monkey D Luffy and I'm going to be king of the pirates!

Not Blender. Its free and awesome!
except blender, thats completely free :D
Blender rules
I want to pay for some features, eg: I want Blender to charge everyone for all addons but for the price they will supply support. Instead your addon doesn't work so it's the addon's fault not Blender, Something is wrong with your Blender ask them to help you. Being caught in the middle is the prime reason Blender is not pro software.
Well i would like to comment on this,
blender is open software if i know this correctly, you can learn programming and fix your plugins.... Basically this is your work, not their...
In the worst case you can hire some programmer in blender and fix these stuff on your own...
Or just stay on the version that works with all your addons (this is a common tactic)
Best regards, hope this helps sort your problems with plugins
@@DEVconstructionLTD In my case the new addon destroyed my file also the copy and paste of files also transferred the infection to a blank file. I had to find that out myself as I got the "not my problem" from both sides. Programmers didn't help as the bugs I had were isolated it would had taken them a month to figure it out.
Sure.
You wont own anything and you will like it.
Boycott Adobe
And they still talk trash about Blender. Pathetic.
Switch to blender.
i really think that it has nothing to do with worrying about bootleg any software
at all more like greedy company's trying to burn us in the long run
