Welcome back to another exciting episode of The Brits Try! This time, Andrew and Nicola, your favorite British expats living in the USA, are taking on the legendary Chicago deep dish pizza. Join us as we dive into the heart of Chicago’s most iconic pizza establishments and ask the burning question: Is this the best pizza in America?
Pizzeria Uno: www.unos.com/
Pizzeria Uno is where it all began. Established in 1943 by Ike Sewell, this pizzeria introduced the world to deep-dish pizza. The buttery crust, rich tomato sauce, and generous cheese make it a must-visit for any pizza lover.
After trying deep-dish pizzas from Pizzeria Uno, Lou Malnati’s, and Pequod’s, Andrew and Nicola are ready to share their thoughts. How does Chicago’s deep dish pizza compare to other pizzas they’ve tried across America?
Lou Malnati's Pizzeria: www.loumalnatis.com/about
Lou Malnati’s is a family-run pizzeria with a rich history dating back to 1971. Known for their perfectly balanced deep-dish pizzas, Lou Malnati’s offers a cozy and welcoming dining experience. Their pizzas are a testament to Lou Malnati’s dedication to quality and flavor.
Pequod’s Pizza: pequodspizza.com/chicago/
Pequod’s is famous for its pan-style deep-dish pizza with a caramelized crust. Founded by Burt Katz in 1970, Pequod’s has been serving up unique and delicious pizzas for over 40 years. Their Lincoln Park location is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike.
Andrew and Nicola have traveled across the USA, sampling various iconic American foods, from massive Tomahawk steaks to authentic Texas BBQ. But today, they're on a mission to explore the deep-dish pizza culture of Chicago, known for its thick, hearty crusts and layers of cheesy goodness. Will the Windy City's famous deep dish pizza live up to its reputation? Watch as we embark on this delicious adventure!

The best pizza is pizza the way you like it.
The second best pizza is whatever upsets your enemies the most.
We completely agree with you. The second part of your comment had us laughing out loud!😀
Truer words never spoken.
Haha!! 100%
Second best Pizza - ham with pineapple on it... To make people cringle... It's not bad and I'll eat it. But prefer sausage / ham / pep / onions / green peppers.
I have the benefit of those being the same thing. I have regrettably not been able to have Gino's in years.
It will never get old watching people from across the globe fall in love with a local dish.
The Pizza was spectacular! and we had a great time in Chicago! Thanks for watching
As a Chicagoan, if I have to choose deep dish, I'm a Lou Malnatis guy. That being said, we go for our under the national radar tavern/pub style thin crust. Vito and Nicks is number one for me. Thank you for checking out our treasures!
Vito & Nick's 💯👌🏻
Yes the tavern style is my favorite out of them all.
I just posted this. Deep dish is for tourists.
@@shawncorley3229 facts
this man paid $5 to speak the gospel of pizza truth
I lived in Chicago for 30 yrs. My deep dish go-to is Lou Malnati’s. Only would have it once or twice/ yr. The tried and true is tavern style, cut in squares.
We always did Lou Malnati’s for special occasions like birthdays and graduations. After each of my parents’ funerals we hosted the after meal at Lou Malnati’s. It was a nice way to end a sad day.
I'm Lou's for life, but I can tell you, NOTHING is better than COLD, out of the fridge, Lou's in the morning....hahahahaha...
100%
The best breakfast in the world.
I literally just had Lou's cold pizza from the fridge for breakfast 😂
The thick pizzas you were thinking is probably Chicago stuffed pizza.
(Chicagoans eat “Tavern Style Pizza”, deep dish only occasionally.)
Thanks for sharing that insight about Chicago pizza! We will definitely have to head back to Chicago to try the Tavern style pizza in the future.😉😉
@@thebritstryin Chicago there's a place called super Rosa it's on Grand avenue close to Montrose there's another one called biagio's which is also super Rosa in there are in Norridge is there pizza stuffed pizza made them very rich
@@johnscimeca899Suparosa is garbage food.
My favorites for deep dish are Giordano’s and Lou’s
I'm from Chicago and have NEVER understood the debate. There really is no debate. Each type of pizza from anywhere has its merits. My favorite, of course, is Chicago deep dish but I love New York and Detroit style as well. It's kinda like cheeseburgers. Is there such a thing as a bad ine?
This could be true, we found out when we tried each style of pizza! 🤗
I think the debate has value as a fun, friendly rivalry between cities. As long as it's all in good fun, and no one's takin it too seriously, it's just a fun cultural thing for people to engage with. You end up with videos like this series, where people actually go and taste test and compare classic pizza places (or burger places, or hot dog places, etc).
Of course, taken too seriously, the debate is meaningless. Which type of pizza is best? That depends entirely on the taste of whoever you ask.
Even though Detroit style has been around along time it’s just now getting recognition nation wide and it won’t disappoint
be quiet muggel
I love Detroit Pizza ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Detroit style is my favorite
Absolutely!!!
Lived in southern California all my life, and the only actual Detroit-style pizza I've ever experienced was from Little Caesar's. I started making my own and it's so much freakin' better, lol. Especially when the cheese "crown" comes out just right. LC's doesn't even really do the cheese crown, I think they just smash the dough up against the pan near the top to make it thinner and crunchier, but almost no cheese actually runs around the edges.
Funny because for regular Chicagoans, we prefer Tavern Pizza from the local joint.
We ran out of time! but that means we have to come back to Chicago for the tavern pizza in the future! 😉😉 New york pizza video out tomorrow.
As a Chicagoan we don’t eat deep dish all the time we usually go for tavern style. Even though, we’re known for deep dish.
My favorite spot for DD pizza is Lou Malnatis or Pizanos.
I love that you’re enjoying our cuisines 😊.
Good shout on Pizano's! Their pizza is good!
Yeah as being from Chicago we don't eat deep dish . It's more for tourist .
Being from northern Illinois I agree. If you get outside of the “city” you really can’t find a deep dish pizza. It’s mostly bar/tavern pie.
@GP80888 There's a place in Cary called Uncle Jerry's that makes a great deep dish called sweet heat. They drizzle a spicy honey on it and it's amazing. It was reviewed by Dave Portnoy and he gave it a high score.
@@ellenawebb9433 only south siders think that.
I love that you did more of these.
Pizza culture in Chicago is best explained by the improv saying "Yes, and." Do we eat deep dish? Yes, and do we eat thin (tavern) crust? Yes, and do we like Detroit style? Yes, and do we do Neopolitan? Yes, and do we have walking slices? Yes, and do we have Pizza Puffs? Yes, and do we have Skillet/Old-Fashioned pizzas? Yes, and...
Deep dish is best known outside Chicago, but our thin crust (other places call it 'Tavern') is getting better-known.
Thanks for sharing and for watching! We now really want to come back and try the Tavern style pizza, we just didn't have enough time on this trip. Our New York Pizza video is out this afternoon.
If you don't like the caramelized (not burnt) cheese on the crust, you won't like Detroit Style Pizza. It a characteristic of Detroit Style Pizza....and it's AMAZING!
Thanks for the advice, Here is the link to the Detroit pizza video if you haven't seen it. ruclips.net/video/d3iZgUvwE9s/видео.html and New York Pizza Video ruclips.net/video/RcZLslwjcbE/видео.html
As someone from Chicago, I do love deep dish. That being said, it is not pizza. It is something else... true chicago people know tavern style is the real chicago style.
Deep dish is essentially the food version of our tourist traps.
Thanks for the advice! Looks like we need to head back to do a tavern style pizza tour!😉😋😉
Fennel seed in the sausage, not aniseed.
Distinction without a difference they’re both anise flavored
@@Knightowl1980 Sure, they both contain anethole, but in quite different amounts; and they differ in the other flavors present.
Chicagoan here, the debate is always Lou's vs Pequods. Personally, its not close. Lou's is real deep dish. Theres a reason Lou's has 50+ locations vs just 2 for Pequods.
My favorite is Lou's thin crust spinach with caramelized onions. Yum. I live about 15 minutes from Pequod's, but I have never eaten there. I need to try.
Just because there's more of one place doesn't make them better! There's more McDonald's than any other restaurant and they taste like crap😂 Sometimes the more restaurants you have the more you're going to skimp on the product
lou's is deep dish and pequods is Pan and it's different.
You have to make reservations at Pequods just to be able to get in. Lou’s has been sold out the Chinese just like portillo’s has. Sad.
So McDonald’s is better than most burger places, because there are more McDonald’s locations?! 🤡
There is no such thing as bad Chicago pizza. Only less good Chicago pizza. :) We're actually known for two different types of pizza - deep dish and tavern style, which is a thin and crispy square-cut pizza. Most locals will tell you that tavern style is the "real" Chicago pizza and that deep dish is for tourists or occasional splurge.
Being from Chicago, I've only had deep dish pizza a handful of times. That's mostly a special occasion pizza, and for tourists and family that comes from out of town for a visit. Me and my family usually eat thick crust Chicago style pizza cut into squares. That's probably why I like Detroit style as well, and the fact that I have family from Detroit. 😅
The deep dish is cooked with the sauce on top because of the extended time it has to cook because of the thickness, they don't want the cheese to burn.
Nothing like waking up and seeing people enjoying something you can’t get for another 4/5 hours 😩 I’m so hungry now 😂
Hope fully you can get there later today! Thanks for watching
Hope you also try chicago tavern style, the thin crispy crust to the nice amount of sauce and cheese, its just so good
Thanks for the advice! Looks like we need to head back to do a tavern style pizza tour!😉😋😉
The problem with Chicago deep dish is that you'll be in a food coma after eating it! 😂 I'm intrigued by Detroit, though
Deep dish pizza can definitely be heavy, but it's so worth it! Detroit Video will follow very soon! Thanks for watching
Detroit is better it's just not as well known as the Chicago or NY styles.
@@ik7578 comes down to preference. I've great pizzas in both cities.
@@ik7578you smoking good good if you think detroit better. And keep in mind chicago has more than deep dish we also have thincrust and pan pizza. Idk why people think deepdish is the only pizza we serve.
@@tnxjesus I KNOW Detroit is better, and I don't have to smoke anything like you to think otherwise. 😂
I’m happy for you guys, you looks so happy doing this US food tour
As a Chicagoan, my personal favorite has always been Giordano's. It's been awhile since I've eaten one - but, I would always get either the "Giordano's Special" or a deep dish Spinach pizza. 😀
Giodanos is soooooo good!!
Love Gino's East.
I agree Giordano's is my go to (deep dish) pizza, but Aurelio's is my favorite.
Giordano's will always be my favorite, but I recently came across "Waldo Cooney's" out in Lansing and their deep dish is just as phenomenal lol.
Take Care ...
Yes to Giordano’s. That’s my favorite then uno’s
I love your channel! You are both so sweet and I love how you interact with each other and the joy you show with each new experience. God bless you both ❤
So glad your getting to try this. Thanks for the great content.
You can consider an AMTRAK train from NYC to New Haven.
For a bonus take AMTRAK to Philly for cheese steak sandwiches.
That Chicago style looks SO good!!
If you want a really thick pizza, you need to try a stuffed pizza in Chicago. Giordano's is the best!
Thank you for this review. I cannot wait to see how it goes in Detroit ( the D) and NYC. As a Chicagoan, Lou's and Giordanos are my two favorite spots. NYC will be a tough competitor in this Pizza Olympics, but Chicago stays ready for the challenge! Safe travels:)
LOVE THIS VIDEO !!!! thanks guys
Thanks for the Amazing comment, it has made our day! glad you liked it! Thanks for watching,
I knew you both would like Lou Malnatis! It was also my fave deep dish pizza when I visited Chicago.
So good!
The best thing about Chicago is that has *all* the pizza. Stuffed, pan, pub-style, Neopolitan, Detroit style, NY Style, etc. Something for everyone!
I LOVE the burnty cheese edges.
Heyyy my people!!!! Glad to see ya!! All three places are awesome for pizza!! Very different but great in its own right!! I'm more of a thin and crispy pizza type like NYC style! Enjoy!!!!
Audio quality and overall production of your guys videos are getting better and better each upload! Keep it up!!!!
Chicago Deep Dish is the way to go!
Lou's Cornmeal Crust will always complete your trip to Chicago.
In Herman Melville's Mody Dick, the Pequod is the whaling ship most of the book is set on. PS - Great video!!!!
Love this entertaining channel
It's nice to hear an unbiased opinion of someone that's not from another major US metropolitan city.
Thank you for your kind words!
I have lived in Chicago and Detroit, and the best Chicago pizza I've eaten was in Detroit. It was the deep-dish seafood pizza, in Greek Town, at Pizza Papalis.
Thanks for sharing your experience! It's always great to hear about unique food finds. we will add it to the list of places to try! Our New York Pizza video is out this afternoon!
My partner is from the UK, and I'm born and raised in Chicago. Can't wait to have this experience with him when he visits! Thank you for sharing your adventures, I love this channel ♥
That's so exciting! We are sure your partners mind will be blown! We hope you both have an amazing time together. Thanks for watching
That could have been a George Takei voice.. "OH MY!!"
I grew up in NYC and thought that there were no comparisons, but the pizza in New Haven, CT is really up there. Sally's and Pepe's are great, but I love Modern. US Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro recently testified on the floor of the House that New Haven has the best pizza in the US. Olympic, World and US Figure Skating Champion as well as Yale graduate, Nathan Chen is apt to agree
1000x better than this joke "pizza" style from Chicago.
I love deep dish pizza as a meal and New York Pizza as a snack😃🇺🇸💙
I like how there's baseball on display in the background everywhere you go. LOL!
You've had Chicago deep dish pizza. Now you must try the many great varieties of Neopolitan style pizza here in Chicago. Happy travels.
Finally a Chicago food tasting video that visits Pizzeria Uno!! One of my favorites if I get deep dish.😊 Glad you enjoyed it. Pequods (Pah-qwads) is a favorite for tavern style.
The ingredients need to be layered the in a certain way:
Copious amounts of cheese is always the bottom layer to form a water-tight seal and prevent the crust from getting soggy.
The most common topping, Italian sausage, is usually applied raw because the pie needs to cook for a long period anyways and precooked sausage can become overcooked.
The sauce needs to go on top, again because any other ingredient would scorch cooking for that long.
Though the logic is kinda circular, the pizza needs to cook for so much longer than thinner pizzas entirely because it's so thick.
At Pequod’s I’d go for the thinner tavern style. 🍕
I know you were only doing deep dish today though.
I love Pequods, although, the deep dish is more of a treat I only have a few times a year. Any other time, you're right, the thin crispy, tavern style just lets you enjoy more of the pizza. You can pile those little squares on your plate, and somehow always manage to go for just 1 more piece .
your videos are really improving fast. this was great.
I’m a Lou’s guy myself but I love the burnt crust from pequads. Next time you’re in town try to get the tavern style thin crust. That’s what most of Chicagoan’s eat when they go out for pizza. Deep dish is for when family comes in for a visit.
right deep dish and stuff are for family or friends that come to visit. we Chicagoans that live here do tavern style or pequods. also most of the tavern pizzas that are good are on the southside
You gotta try New Haven pizza too. Modern aPizza is good, but I’ve heard zeneli Pizzeria e Cucina Napoletana is even better.
Come on Detroit! My favorite.
Up next!😀
Deep dish is really tourist pizza, special occasion pizza. 99% of the time on any given night, we order tavern style Chicago pizza. Thin crust, crispy, cut in squares. We order deep dish when your cousin from another state to visit.
Good to know!
Deep Dish is for tourists and special occasions. Locals typically eat Chicago Tavern Style Thin Crust cut into squares. Please give that a try instead. You won't regret it.
Malnati's is a corn meal crust pizza. Pequod's crust is caramelized, not burnt.
Gino's East is the corn meal crust
Corn oil I think. Not meal.
As a Chicagoan, Lou’s is absolutely in a tier above all the others. Watching this, I really appreciated how respectful you both were about the food and yet not afraid to be like “this is not for me”. You should give a rating for each!
Thank you for your kind words and feedback! we will definitely think of trying to add some kind of rating
I've never had the pleasure of trying any of these pizza styles or restaurants so I look forward to and thank you for your insights! Maybe one day, I'll make it out to one!❤😊
You can order Lou’s for shipping
I can feel that burning the roof of my mouth through the screen
The chunk Tomatoes and the Buttercrust are the primary reason Lou Malnatti’s wins 90% of all Chicago deep dish cook offs held in recent years. Eat the crust first and be amazed…it ain’t just for holding the sauce & cheese….it’s really edible.
Add the sausage and you got the BEST in Chicago.
Totally agree, Lou Malnatti's pizza is the amazingly good, especially with those chunky tomatoes and buttery crust! Thanks for watching
My favorite American pizza is Detroit Pizza hands down. It's spectacular ❤❤❤ I can't wait to see that video! Neapolitan is my all time favorite and my top choice. 😋🤤
I’m not from Chicago but I do know that San Marzano tomatoes are usually used in tomato sauces/pizza sauces. That’s likely what you’ll get from Chicago/Ny pizzas
Love your reactions
Thank you for watching. 🤗
I agree. Lou Malnati's is my go-to for deep dish.
It was delicious! especially the butter crust. Thanks for watching
Well done you two! Nice selection of pizzerias and you are spot on with the analogy of Pequod's with Marmite. Mmmmm I ❤ Marmite and especially the Crunchy Peanut Butter Marmite with porridge! I wonder if you both would enjoy stuffed pizza from a place like Giordano's as well as tavern style. Cheers!
I'm excited for you guys to try the detroit deep dish pizza! My state! Detroit Deep dish is amazing!!
We did! Hope you check out our video. ruclips.net/video/d3iZgUvwE9s/видео.html
@thebritstry I did and enjoyed it! Glad you guys are enjoying yourselves!
Gino’s East is my favorite Chicago deep dish. Sooo good!
We don't really put pepper on pizza, only red pepper flakes
Good to know. 😀
There generally is black pepper in the pizza sauce though unless it's a place that only uses crushed tomatoes.
Love watching you two! Thanks for sharing your lives (and diet) with us 👍🏻. Wait that sounds weird saying it out loud. Oh well.
My favorite is Lou’s btw
So glad you are also trying Detroit style.
Did the waiter really just use his finger to get rid of the cheese pull🤣🤣
it's ok - he had licked it clean in the kitchen just before coming out to the table
My favorite thing about Lou's pizza, beyond the single piece of sausage, is that you can taste the wine used to cook the tomatoes.
The sauce was so tasty! and the buttercrust was great too! Thanks for the information! Our New York Pizza video is out this afternoon.
The secret is the top crust. Crust, cheese and toppings, top crust and then sauce. Chicago style!
Great job guys! I love your reviews the very first pizza, deep dish that my parents took us to was Uno’s still absolutely love it. Also, I get more Lou Malnati’s since I have one in my backyard. Also love Lou’s and one you didn’t try, it’s called Giordano‘s. But maybe next time you’re passing through but great job.!
Hey, thanks for the love and for sharing your pizza journey with us! We'll definitely check out Giordano's next time, thanks for the tip!
The neighborhood where Uno is located was already loud, and they opened a casino across the street in the last year, too.
Chicago style pie hits a bit different in the winter when you walk around downtown and the wind chills your soul . Lol
Oh yes, it sounds like it the hearty meal that you need in the winter. 😀
But did you try the tavern style? Choose a favorite at your peril!!!!😨😨😨😱😱😱
Thank you for the suggestion! I love trying new pizza styles, so the tavern style is next on my list.
Never been to any of these places but Pequod's looks like it would be right up my alley.
Looks so good. I've never had deep dish pizza - I prefer thin and crispy more. Looking forward to Detroit and NYC.
How do you know you prefer thin if you never had deep dish?? Just a question... and never try deep dish from any place that's not CHICAGO!!! You should order a Giordano's pizza from the website... get the special, sausage, green pepper, onion and mushroom.
@@bigernmacrackin6176Exactly 🤣
Sad that you missed Giordano's. It really is special.
I'm glad to see you visit my hometown! I haven't lived there for over 30 years but I Def miss the food! My dad is from St. Louis & they have Imos Pizza ( a thin & crispy pizza that I craved with my youngest daughter- I drove down from Indianapolis just to stock up - I visited family too but I was there for the IMOS!😂) Toasted Ravioli is a must have in St. Louis also
Hello friends, this video takes me back to my time in Chicago and the first and only time I had deep dish pizza. I hope you brought plenty of antacid with you!
My pizza was so thick with cheese and sauce I had heartburn for days! That experience turned me into a thin crust pizza girl all the way. Happy eating 😊
Hi! The base didn’t seem to be too thick to us, we expected it to be thicker. Luckily we did not get any heartburn. 😅
I've lived in Chicago since 1956 and I've had deep dish maybe five times. My go to is almost always tavern style, thin crispy crust with lots of cheese and toppings. For Deep Dish I prefer spinach, mushroom, and onion.
For pizza, New Haven CT is King!!!!❤🎉
I grew up on the Chicago area and always loved the deep-dish pizza as a kid. Now, in my 40s, I prefer the polar opposite - a very thin, crispy crust cut into squares.
New Haven, CT. Anywhere in Jersey and NYC of course.
Philadelphia and Eastern Pennsylvania
Thanks for the information! the New York pizza video will be up very soon! but we will try and get back to Connecticut in the future.
@@thebritstry Cool, I enjoyed the vid.
Good morning y'all. I hope you're well! Ma'am your smile is lovely. Look at you enjoying lovely tomatoes 😀
Yes, we were! thank you

Im from the Detroit area. You're gonna love it. Its the best type of pizza.
Thanks for the information! the video will be up very soon!
NY all the way!!!
Lou Malnati’s is where it’s at. The butter crust is crisp and buttery, and the cheese is so perfect!!
So True! Lou Malnati's is the bomb! That butter crust and cheese combo is unbeatable! Thanks for watching
There's nothing like great pizza 🍕 😋
Deep dish is nice but the Chicago thin is good as well also one of my favorite
Watching this while eating a Chicago Classic from Lou Malnati's.
So Jealous!!! getting hungry thinking about it! Thanks for watching
Ahh you would have loved the Pequod's (Pea-Quads) in Morton Grove IL back in the days with the founder, Burt Katz. Check him out. Burt sold Pequod's and opened another pizzeria aptly named Burt's. While Burt has passed away, the current owners studied under Burt and carry on the tradition. You will find other YT videos about Burt Katz. Deep dish pizza at Burt's is the only one Anthony Bourdain liked.
Thank you again for a great video… I must say… The Detroit style seems more of what I would go for… But I’m a southern girl from Florida😂
Thanks for the information! the Detroit pizza video will be up very soon!
You have to go back to Chicago and try the tavern style/thin crust pizza. I’m originally from there and I would recommend (cheese, sausage and maybe pepperoni) in no particular order: Aurelio’s, Vito & Nick’s, and maybe Home Run Inn or Falco’s. There should be 2 categories of pizza from Chicago: thin/tavern and deep dish. I totally agree with your choice of Lou’s! Everything just tastes so fresh 🍕! I hope y’all get to go back!!!
Thanks for sharing! tavern style pizza sounds delicious and we would love to try it. We just ran out of time on this trip.
You guys made me crazy hungry! The crust stays crispy because it's protected from the other ingredients by that layer of cheese. Lots of people think "deep dish" means a thick, bread-like crust, but, as you found out, no. I think Pizza Hut made bready crust famous when they introduced "pan pizza" and people assume that's what deep dish is. I winced each time you said "lasagna" because New Yorkers like to hate on deep dish, likening it to a lasagna rather than a pizza, but they fold their slices in half, making it a sandwich, not a pizza, so what do they know? JK, ALL pizza is good pizza.
You summed it up perfectly, we have had Pizza Hut and assumed it would be similar to that. Thanks for watching!😀
