I didn't realize Charles Spencer, Princess Diana's brother, was an author of such books. Very cool!
be sure to check out 'the white ship'. going way back to 1120. fascinating era, much overlooked. great book.
It's middle age x to XIII. From some Earl Peter middlton.. Because Percy. ENGLAND LIKE France is a foreign culture to me. I am Flamming. Flemish like England was French. Well, the times of Jesus Christ.. It's genes. To attach a name sometimes you have to make a tree to the times of Caesar. And so the coat of arms remains. Those who had a coat of arms in Caesar's time remain..I have a whole gang of Czartoryskis, Fleming and Bourbon, Harrington, or Livingston, or other Englishmen with Scots. House Stuart.. And the former. Progenitors.. And the Italian, that is, Caesar's house. Roman..
Why does this documentary keep interrupting the ads I'm watching??
Because that is how they get made, or at least uploaded. It is called Economics. Do you work for free? Nope, then others don’t either.

Right?
James I of England (aka James VI of Scotland) did NOT inherit the English throne from his mother, Mary Queen of Scots. He interited the throne because Elizabeth I named him as her successor.
He was next in line. Through his mother’s line he was a descendent of Henry VII.
If memory serves Elizabeth I never named an heir even though she knew like the rest of England that James would take the throne.
Because Elizabeth I had no male heir.
@@strawberryjam119
Agreed, she refused to name anyone heir to avoid potential coups. Robert Cecil secretly made a deal with James to succeed Elizabeth, aware he was the only Protestant relative in closest blood proximity. In return, Cecil got to keep his position and got promoted.
The tutors were replaced by Stuarts. But both related to Henry 7. His daughter married a Scottish king making England connected to Scotland and also in line of succession
Thank you for this. I am from the Philippines and I love English history❤
Charles the Headless is my favorite English King.
See the spanish are behind you
Me too, its so interested and magical. Im from South america...a litle country called Ecuador
These times when Stuarts were in charge were really dinamic
Love these documentaries. I read or watch just about everything about England and it's monarchs. But I'm not getting interrupted by adds.
The subscription is worth it. Costs $14 per month. I've been a subscriber for three years now.
Every time I see portraits of Charles I feel bad for him lol those puppy eyes just get to me
Yes he looks like Jesus
@@winnienguyen4420 The real Jesus probably looked close to what Osama Bin Laden looked like - seriously though. Charles I looks like the European fantasy of Christ's appearance. I said this to someone else once when the appearance of Jesus came up and they were offended to the point of being distraught that I would say Jesus looked like Bin Laden.
Great video ! Love that painting by van Dyck; Charles I in three positions. One of my favourites
I was drawn to that too. Even the two opposing profiles are at slightly different angles. Sometimes I wonder how accurate those contemporary paintings were regarding likeness, but somehow having three representations from varying angles, gives a better depiction of the subject's real appearance. I'm surprised more paintings weren't done that way.
it was commissioned for a bust to be made of him by Bernini. The country didn't want him to travel to a Catholic country to sit for it so he sent that photo. The bust was destroyed in the fire at Whitehall
Yes his portraits remind me so much of portraits of Jesus.
This is what I never understood. Charlie was a beaten man yet they still feared him.
This video and your genealogical video inspired me to try my family tree for the first time in 5 years. Insanely jealous of anyone with English heritage right now every single grandparent I have leads Russia 1880 and Im stuck.
Russia has very, very intersting history...
English heritage dates back to Germany, Rome and Jerusalem..What fascinates me is how the monarchs like Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland ,Rollo Walker the Viking King, prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II and her children have all served time in the military and assisted during times of war. That's why it is so easy to research. If my memory serves me correctly King William the Conqueror was the 1st Normandy king of England and he is who began building Windsor Castle
What I watched was about Charles I. I enjoyed it anyway. Thank you.
this is such an enjoyable documentary- it is 4 parts on amazon prime... my first love it the 18th century and the Hanoverians...but I wanted to learn about that whole stuart/tudor/protestant/catholic thing that got them there in the first place....so... GREAT documentary tho, I love the dramatization with the wynns.
Marry me
Guys, can you squeeze more adds ??? I think there is more space for more !!
Great documentary, but geez !
Thank you soooooo much I love watching these soooo much
Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer, is brother to Diana, Princess of Wales.

Is this Charles the brother of Princess Diana if so that is cool.
Who's here after we just got the new Charles lll XD
I love it.
Love the way you tell a story Kate🌿
I have a French clock that i believe has a statue of King Charles 1st on it. Its the main reason ive been watching these videos.
I have been to this castle, its so beautiful, and kept together by one couple
It looks like it! The neatest castle which I have seen! I wish to visit one day as well.
I hope this covers what I need for a book I'm writing.
*Oh, nice! They have Philip (Mould) giving commentary!*
Felton - is a figure in the three musketeers
Im so intrigued by English Monarchy and its line of succession. The narrator all of them, English prof. Mr Spencer etc.. making it more interesting not missing any of the link of the Royal story
From the title, I was expecting more story including Charles II. As the film drew to a close and Charles II was just getting introduced, I thought there must be another video but I can't find it.
Its called charles II return from exile ( or close to that )
Agree. The photo is Charles II not I.
Where’s the video on Charles II?
Seriously, RUclips? An ad every 3 minutes? I'm out.
You can always download the video...
James II is my 10th great grandfather and in my head I’m a whole Scottish princess lol
Charles 1st was NOT the first King of England
to be raised in the Church of England!
Henry 8th's son Edward 6th was the first!
Please correct me if I am wrong about that.
That bothered me, too.
They meant the first in the Stuart line of English Monarchs.
Correct Edward VI was born in 1537 the Church of England seperated from the Roman Catholic Church in 1534. Interestingly from what I understand Charles 1st father James 1st (King James Bible, yeah that's the guy) was raised in the Church of Scotland when it still retained Bishops instead of Presbyterian organization, but was staunchly Calvinist to the point of frowning on Candles on the Altar and Incense, then his son marries a Roman Catholic girl lol 🤔😂
@@patrickpleasant151 It would seem irony is built into history. Take Edward I, who decided Scotland was England's but then upon the death of Elizabeth I, a Scot took over as King of England.
I read somewhere that Henry VIII actually remained a Catholic for the rest of his life. He only established the Church of England so he could divorce his wife.
The thumbnail appears to depict Charles II.
YAY! You're back! Thanks for making Ramadaan bearable (don't tell my grandmother I said this)
SHE KNOWSSSS!
18:45 It's good that someone makes such educational films. I did the ethnic test dna my Heratige. To my surprise, it turned out that I had English genes. The whole family came to what is now Poland in 1800.Grandparents from van de Rijke ,Second -Svensson - Nassau,Femme van Egmont/von Stolberg . Some Livingston from the first baronet of Hamilton. Some Middleton Peter from 1290.It's good that there are German translations.I'm not surprised that they fled from England or Scotland. But it's a long time ago, I was born in Poland .From the mitress of the Tsars Romanov. It must be admitted that I went to the Officers of the Red Ark in Aleksandrov's choir. And Prigozin didn't say anything... he was like Gargamel in a poorly tailored suit.
What is with the amount of ads on this video?
17:03 Even back then the king's lackeys tried to brush criticism off by calling it 'fake news!'
What’s that melody playing in the background call 0:55 anyone?
Where is the segment on Charles ll ? He was an outrageous swashbuckler character who enjoyed every pretty woman in his Kingdom and struggled to pay upkeep on a bevy of Mistresses. Do his story. He was a chemist and into Alchemy. Knew healing arts.
I think there must have been a mix up.
Yes....on came The Royal Society. Something isn't right. There must be another video...I hope.
I'm not particularly interested in who he screwed. I don't want the Jerry Springer version.
Timeline has videos on James I, Charles I and Charles II.. they’re all there
The title says Charles I. That line next to it is a divider! 🤦🏽♀️
it REALLy looks like Charles II lol
The thumbnail portrait is of chuck II. The doc is on chuck I....but it is just a still from the intro that shows a number of portraits..everyone settle down.
Just look up Timeline "The Return of Charles II from Exile" and it is all about the Charles II.
Top notch Story telling the Acting is Excellent.. Kudos .. I live in Atlanta Ga I'm just now getting into all these Kings . Power and Control has been the Great Plague on Man kind..
Unbelievably similarly as late as the turn of the 1900's in modern scientific times Kaiser Wilhelm II who was aware and educated in everything including science believed in the divine right of kings!
Believed in, or pretended to believe in?
So did the Tsar of Russia and the Kaiser of Austria-Hungary.
This is less about who Charles was as opposed to what modern society thinks he was.
‘Gentleman of the Privy Bedchamber’ that’s Baldrick from Lord Blackadder
It rained for millions of years once
more adds than documentary
That thumbnail is Charles II though, right?
Yes
The first time I went to an Anglican Church and heard Charles I referred to as a Saint, I nearly burst out laughing. Fortunately, I caught myself and didn't, but it was quite a surprise. I am a great fan of Thomas Carlyle and very much appreciate his works on Cromwell.
What?! That is crazy. I do have an interest in the Russian Revolution and the Soviet Union. From there I can pick up on similar events. One big one is the French Revolution. Now I am seeing that the English Civil War is another one. The Russian czar Nicholas II and his whole family got canonized as saints. I think this is the worst canonization I have seen. This is the same family that the Russian people put on house arrest and killed with the firing squad. Nicolas II was such a bad tyrant. The people got tired of the oppression that the fought back. They replaced the monarchy with communism. This new system had more benefit to the people,, or at least it was supposed to.. Since Nicolas II was such a bad ruler, he doesn't deserve to be a Saint. Saints are supposed to be good and holy guys. I didn't know Charles I got canonized too. That is horrible. Oh man. If King Louis and Queen Marie Antoinette get canonized too, I am going to freaking scream. They even got thier heads chopped just like Charles I. History repeats itself.
@@sylviadailey9126 You might like this one: An Englishman and a Frenchman are crossing the English channel together sometime after the Battle of Waterloo. The Frenchman says "You English really have no idea what a revolution really is." The Englishman replies, "Oh, no. We most certainly do. A revolution is a circular path which leads one back to where one began."
38:42 that’s not the English civil war. That’s the Battle of Lützen.
Thumbnail says Charles the 1st. It's Charles the 2nd
The most interesting thing about King Charles the First is that he was five foot six inches tall at the start of his reign, but only four foot eight inches tall at the end of it.
🙏
The title references King Charles I, but the portrait is that of his son Charles II.
I would marry this lovely lady telling the story
English Civil wars coincided? with the Anglo Dutch wars of 1660s-70s, until 1689m then the reign of William and Mary and Queen Anne then wars of Spanish Succession then Austrian Succession, the succession of King George I, Georg I of Hanover?
This is about Charles I. Not II. Where’s the video about Charles II??
There is a wonderful film about Charles II with Rufus Sewell....who, as usual, gives a performance worthy of awards.
Look up Timeline the return of Charles II.
I have a question but what kind of a king was Charles the second of England and the reason I am asking is because I am watching a movie called admiral and it’s about Dutch admiral Michael de Ruyter and in the movie it’s portraying King Charles the second of England as someone like king George the third of the United Kingdom what i mean by that is someone who wouldn’t give independence to any nations like in the movie the king of England is not giving independence to the Dutch Republic
The video on Charles II is out.
Doesn't make much since because Charles II didn't own the Netherlands. They were once owned by Spain and earlier by the Holy Roman Empire, but got independence after the 80 years war. The Netherlands were actually wealthier and had a far better Navy than England at the time of Charles II reign.
King Charles II was a jolly womanizing king with many illegitimate children but not one legitimate one. His reign is often associated with the return of theaters and brothels to England but also the plague and the Great Fire of London in 1666. Aside from that he was quite popular completely the opposite of his younger brother who took the throne after he passed away. He, James II, was in my opinion the most tyrannical of the Stuart kings.
Why is the image of charles II?
This lady’s accent is so adorable, I can’t figure out why
Maybe because you might be a foregner

Recording quality out of adjustment. Far, far too much base, and I cannot correct it on my end no matter how I try with the sound controls. I suspect the problem is with the recording. Real shame, because I would like to hear this video.
I can hear the video just fine. The problem is probably your computer.

Mary of Modena was a daughter of Anne Martinozzi one of the Mazarinetes and a cousin to Louis de Bourbon Le Grand Conti ho was a son of Armand I de Bourbon Conti and Anne Martinozzi
Charles I despite being a bit of a despot, is such a sympathetic character to me. He reminds me of jesus in most of his portraits. I honestly think despite even if removing him from the throne he shouldn't have been executed. I find that wrong and disgusting on so many levels. The same for King Louis 16th 150 years later. Capital punishment for a monarch was absolutely taboo back then. That's why Napoleon was never executed.

Not a religion expert but I just don't understand the Catholic vs Protestant conflict don't get how Christians want to kill each other thought that was mandated about in bible
Robertw unfortunately it continues to happen to this day, between the different denominations of Christianity. Part of it has to do with ego, power, and control
Robertw time honoured tradition of kill eachother over the right way too worship imaginary sky spirits of course.
Personally I theorize the wars is man satisfying the old urge too kill rivals because of the same instincts that drive wolves too kill coyotes. Just now we attach excuses like gods too it.
I guess I'm saying war is a by product left over from a more wild animal version of the human.
Same with sunni and shia in Islam.
