My first guitar was a classical with nylon strings. I paid $35 for it at Sears when I was 16. I gave it to a friend maybe 30 years ago and I'm still sorry I didn't keep it. ARGH! I'm consoled by the beautiful Taylor that I have now, but of course I wish I had my first guitar too. Don't let go of your instruments, folks! You'll never completely get over it.
You can say that about a lot of things in life. The advice should be don't let regrets rule or bother you, as you don't know what you might have happened if you change these things in your past the outcome could be worse just as much as better.
Hi Rick. Great to see a couple of your basses. I was wondering if you’d consider doing a few videos on common things musicians on different instruments would do in the studio which would annoy you as a producer. Something like “what not to do when you’re tracking bass / drums / electric / acoustic / vocals” etc.
From my experience recording and getting to know engineers/producers: Good studio etiquette is not to be playing when the engineer is getting the amps mic’d. Be mindful of their ears, that’s their money maker. Hang your headsets up when not in use. Ask before you invite anyone in to watch. Be on time. Which means, don’t show up super early. Be practiced. Especially practiced to playing with a click.
I just finished watching these 3 videos in succession. You have justified my guitar collection. I'm mildly surprised that you don't have a Gibson Firebird, or a Gretsch in your collection. I'm not typically a bass player, but I bought a cheap Gretsch Electromatic short scale bass, and I was blown away by the functionality and tone of this thing, I put flatwounds on it, and it's a beast.
Hey Rick....regarding the electrical tape on the "Keith Tele", years ago I replaced the pick guard on an old strat I've had. Apparently the sandwiched construction of the new guard made for a rather efficient storage medium for static electric charge. Merely brushing your fingers across it's surface created all manners of clicks and pops. I remember placing a temporary layer of electrical tape on it. It worked rather well. What you have on that guitar may be on account of something entirely different, however I thought I'd mention my experience none-the-less.
Hey Rick, I think Flea would be an awesome interview for you, and if you do, it would be interesting to find out about his learning piano later in life, and his trumpet playing as well. Would also love to see a Yo Yo Ma, Branford and/or Wynton Marsalis and Herbie Hancock or Chick Corea interviews
My 98 Stingray is the exact same way Rick. Locks in and holds tune perfectly! I was touring in the VERY early 2000's and just as a joke, checked the tuning for an entire summer and never touched it! It held perfectly all summer! To this day, they neck is as I srt it up back then! Just LOVE that bass! It shares duty with my prototype Tim Landers (Peavey) TL-5!
Rick is missing 2 things: A Fender Telecaster with the mirrors and a Dragon jumpsuit! A proper oldschool Page fan gotta have a Dragon jumpsuit! :D Cheers.
I appreciate you Gents-exploring the amazing possibilities-so I don't have to ! Massive respect for all that Rick, Dave and Rhett have accomplished -here's hoping that it only gets Better for us all from here !
I have a 1972 Fender Jazz bass neck, maple and fretless. It is just like it was when I snagged it in 75. You should buy it and have Dave connect it to a sundry bass.
I really dig that second guitar there - the semi-hollowbody one. I have a soft spot for guitars like that, really awesome. One other thing - in response to the tik tock video - if you want to hear something new that actually sounds *really* good and contains lots of guitar, check out the Flaming Lips brand new album "American Head." I just heard it for the first time yesterday and its already up there in my list of favorite albums of theirs - as good as their last album "Oczy Mlody" (that's another really good one you should check out if you haven't heard it - came out in 2017.
Rick Beato - so glad to hear you dig early RUSH. I love early to middle RUSH and even some of their later stuff. Cygnus X-1 is one of my faves in addition to the Permanent Waves album.
Appreciate the guitar tour! So many guitars that you can't remember your names? Also liked the wild Rhett sighting, cleverly hidden behind Dave! Thanks!
I'd consider learning how to play a instrument if i could just hang out over there at Rick's place. Seems like a good hang out place. Thank you for the video.
I'm a Gibson guy myself, preference for humbucker fitted or hollow bodied models, acoustic I favour jumbo bodied vintage models, any make as they all sound different after surviving that long, love me a 12string too, on electric fender sneaks in with the jazzmaster
What do you mean the end Rick you have only just got started love the channel my friend it's fantastic keep up the great work love and respect God bless from the UK 👍👍👍👍👍👍🌟😀😀
I have a strange story to tell: Firstly I need to say that I am a drummer and I don't know much about guitars. Last night I dreamt of the Abasi guitar. prior to the dream I didn't knew there is a guitar company called Abasi and I didn't knew much about Tosin Abasi. In fact the only time I saw him was in the discussion with Rick, Tim Henson and Misha Mansoor and I also heard a song from Animals as Leaders one time. So this is how the dream went: I see the Abasi guitar and I stare at the logo (which I haven't ever previously seen) then I suddenly make the connection with Tosin Abasi and it makes a lot of sense. That's as far as I can remember. When I woke up I remember the dream and the unique guitar shape seemed like it could've come out of a dream and also the connection with Tosin seems unlikely. Then I watch this video and I realise that I dreamt real things. I don't how my subconscious mind made all those connections and how Rick made this video right after I dreamt about it. I probably saw the guitar somewhere and I subconsciously memorized the logo.
Hey Rick, The guitars bring back memorize of old Vox and Goya. The tele tape is probably to dampen hollow sound of pick guard when you hit surface strumming.
Well, after seeing your amazing collection I’ve noticed a few missing models for the next round. You need get yourself a Firebird, Jaguar, Gretsch and(as Rhett will surely agree) a Novo. Love the collection man.
That Tele has a 3-bolt neck!!! I had a 1973 Strat with a 3-bolt neck, I forget what years they made those, but it wasn't very long. I still have my 3-bolt-neck '75 Fernandes Strat clone (!) ...
I have fifty or so musical instruments, but I am not a collector. I'm a player, albeit a bad one. But I have fun. And any guest in my house can play any instrument I own, even if they want to hurt their back wearing an EDS-1275.
The tele is from the Blacktop series. I have the HH Strat version and I love it. The switching on the strat lets you get split coils on the 2 and 4 positions which gives the guitar a huuge range. I wanted a guitar I could learn on which wouldn't break the bank that could be any guitar I wanted atm. Need a tele sound? got it, how about a hot pup gibson? no prob, strat? gotcha covered. The store I ordered it from didn't even know about the range of this and a couple of the guys that work there immediately bought the ones they had in stock for their gig rigs. I don't know why fender only did this with the HH strat, but the others only had a 3 position switch. My little secret, "one guitar to rule them all"
Rick have you ever interviewed Jeff “Skunk” Baxter? Would be great to hear him and his stories of working as a studio musician and of course Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers. He also has so many connections to producers, engineers and other musicians. Just a thought. 👍
Hey, that was fun! Did I miss a video where you guys showed that lovely Gibson archtop you used for one of your Joni Mitchell videos. I loved the sound of that guitar.
I was 10 or 12 years old when my brother got those first two Led Zep albums (I later got III with my own money when it came out), and hearing the acoustic part to Ramble On brings back such memories ... The Abasi reminds me, a friend recently posted a Rickenbacker slanted-fret (NOT fanned, they were all at the same non-90-degree angle) Rickenbacker guitar, and I remember as a teen being in a music store in Rome, Ga. (there were two big ones, I forget which one this might have been) about 1974-1975, I played one (the salesman practically shoved it into my hands, apparently they weren't selling well). It did feel a bit weird but he of course said "you get used to it." Those Basses ... WHY DIDN'T YOU PLUG THEN UP AND PLAY THEM? You could have played the bass part to Ramble On, dubbed in the guitar part, oh it would have been so great ...
It’s hard to go wrong buying a guitar, really. Even bad ones can be utilized to sound cool for what’s unique about it. And for those watching who may not even play!- - do they ever decrease in value?

Did the Guild come with the faux alligator HSC? I wonder if Tony Levin still touts his no G-string MM 3 stringer? That idea has floated around in my head for a couple of decades...
Rick, I was especially digging the Fender 12 - I think the original was called a “Villager”. Why does it have the “split” pickups? Looks sort of like the arrangement on a P-Bass. Didn’t realize Jimmy Page used the Fender 12 on “Stairway” - thought it was just a Rickenbacker 12 with everything set as bright as possible.
That's funny the switch on your Tele didn't work. I had a 72 MIM Tele and had the exact same issue!. On another note I regret selling my Dano DC3 as I have never seen another one for sale. Ah well, life goes on. Nice collection but I think you need another bass or 3. A fretless, 8 or 12 string (since you're a pearl jam fan), and an acoustic!
I always wondered why Fender hasn't released a Keith Richards signature telecaster. There is no doubt they would sell a lot! Does anyone know why? It must be because Keith is not interested but has he ever discussed it in an interview?
My Goldfish are named Major, Minor, Dorian, Lydian and Diminished. The only way I can tell them apart is by their scales.
good one...but a bit slippery....:-)
I see what you did there, great one!
Sounds fishy to me
😧
Ha!
Crazy how they animated Rhett into the green screen!
It's really a bigger studio with far more equipment, made to look smaller.
You have to love when your buddy tells you about your own gear...
The Where’s Rhett Shull series begins.
Wish Dave had a guitar channel
It seems he knows everything about guitars. Its amazing lol. And he can play!!

Next video go thru Dave's collection, don't stop this...
Dave or Rick, Rick or Dave can always tell you apart by the tone/attack under your fingers on any guitar you play! Play on!
As soon as Dave struck a chord on the Goya it reminded me of Pat Martino's tone.

I have a 1960's EKO 12 String. A little beaten up but very easy to play and sounds sensational.
I had a similar experience playing somebody else’s fanned fret 6 string bass
It really is intuitive and you just adapt
Use your Goya to do a breakdown on Morricone's "Spaghetti Western"

Good comment and Rick Beato should make this idea in a video.

That EB with the birdseye neck is stunning and probably sounds as good.
Rick your 4003 is a 4003s Mono output, dot fingerboard, no binding, sweet Macca specs. Squire had the '64 Rose Morris RM1999 (same as a 4001s).

Keeeeeeeiiiiiiiitttthhhh! Dave said you need one of those Danos. Sorry, but Dave said.
I hope you do an amp collection video next. Then maybe outboard gear?
Outstanding. I wish I could collect drum kits like Rick collects guitars. That Fender 12 string and the Danelectro...Yabba Dabba Do!
These were some very cool 3 videos! Now do the same for the amps! That will take a few more videos! hehe!
There's no better way to play Latin-style music than on a nylon string. That one sounds gorgeous.
Ha!... I was watch an amazing interview with Rory Hoffman from 2012, but had to pause it to hear any guitar geek nuggets that Dave puts out ~

Hey Rick: I'd love to hear the 3 Amigos play some covers (or originals). 3 songs with each of you playing bass on one of them.
Now amps .. pedals .. studio stuff .. Like That !
I have a '72 tele deluxe reissue (same 3-way switch as the Keith tele) and mine is broken as well. Fender really needs to do some QC on them lol.
Going to browse Reverb now for the next 5 hours
"The F holes are tiny, and way down the bottom". And that folks, is why guys love guitars.
