    The Great Old One Warlocks are actually very powerful, if a bit finicky. All their extended spells are either divination spells or control spells. It's one of the few classes/subclasses that get a resistance, and it's the uncommon psychic resistance. It's also one of two classs/subclasses that gets telepathy natively.

    • @ashtonhoward5582
      @ashtonhoward5582 11 месяцев назад +4

      Psychic resistance isn't very applicable though. I'm not going to get into other classes, so staying within warlock you have the Undead with resistance to necrotic damage, the Fiend with a choice of what to be resistant to, the Genie with one of four resistances, the Fathomless with cold, and the Celestial with radiant. And Hexblade gets to make their cursed target miss 50% of what would normally be hits, which isn't quite as good as resistance but is far more applicable than resistance to one damage type.
      I will give you telepathy, though. It certainly can be good if the DM actually makes it worth anything. Though being able to communicate regardless of what language they can speak is pretty big regardless.
      Overall, I wouldn't call them powerful compared to the rest of the warlock subclasses. Though I would say the same for every warlock subclass (good job, WoTC), if it weren't for Hexblade existing. It's just too good for raw damage, and invocations cover most of your noncombat stuff as it is.

      @RaethFennec 11 месяцев назад

      Ehhh. I rolled one as my first D&D character before I understood much and thank goodness my DM let me change up a few stats and choices later so I could swap to Fiend. GOW really is not that great, especially once you learn that the "telepathy" is only one-way. RAI, they can't speak back. It's a nice feature if your DM allows it, though, especially if you don't have access to species that have better telepathy features. Like Kalash-tar or Thri-kreen. Extended spell list is very meh. A resistance is great, but it's not until level 10 so your campaign is probably almost over and unless you're specifically fighting mindflayers or something with lots of psychic damage it's very likely to never come up. Entropic Ward is only once per short rest, and Create Thrall is VERY DM-dependent since it only charms the affected target, giving you some advantage on Charisma checks and not letting them attack you, but doesn't compel them to do anything.
      I see Great Old One Warlocks as similar to something like Horizon Walker ranger.

    I once played a farmer, who was contacted by a maiden deity, who claimed she was wrongly imprisoned in another dimension. From that day forth, he deemed himself her champion... and would be the greatest Paladin the world had ever seen, and would free this fair maiden from her unjustly imprisonment!
    Unfortunately, it wasn't a maiden deity, but a Great Old One who fed on the sanity of mortals. Lyomar had inadvertently agreed to have It as his patron and become a Warlock... and gone completely and utterly insane from the meeting.
    Had he succeeded in freeing the "maiden", he'd have opened a portal into the dimension of the Great Old One, allowing it to slip into the material plane, offering up a whole smorgasbord of mortals to feast upon!

    A party member of mine was a servant of an old god. But the old god was old more in a litteral way. Like geriatric, often forgets things. Needs priestesses like the party member to remind them what century it is again. A god of chaos not out of spite to the order of the universe. But because her cosmically large brain isn't what it used to be.

    I love bits in fantasy settings where people talk in the absolute simplest, least dramatic terms about what is usually revered and sacred. Because in a D&D world, all those fantastic magical or deific concepts are actually tangible, practical matters. Nonplussed, unimpressed pragmatism in fantasy is amazing.

    Had a warlock that worshipped The Lord of Traps. Looks like a living castle made of arcane runes so complex you’d lose your mind trying to comprehend them, he’s actually The Trapped Lord. The cosmic equivalent of showing how silly these fuzzy handcuffs are to the other elder gods only to lose the key somewhere in the universal shag carpet. Now he’s trying to “find a worthy mind, capable of solving his greatest mystery” while not embarrassing himself by revealing he can’t remember what planet he left the arcane sigil on.

    Clearly, the forgotten gods of toenails and the second kind of snow were listening, and they curse him for his insolence while they chortle with wicked glee in the background. Imagine it: cursed by being buried in snow that never melts, all while his toenails grow exponentially by the hour, and Skenk comes in to see what the heck is going on, amongst this he screams "Help!" and Skenk is all..."....um....no..." as Skenk backs away from his cursed brother, lest he receive the Old Ones wrath; and the daughter, in her room, smirks in what can only be considered as ultimate victory.
