I like to add that painting the back and bottom of the tank helps and that if you have a QT make sure you touch that tank last out of all your other tanks to help with stop bacteria and pest spreading

Great topic. I have been QTing for 10 years (prophylactically medicating) and have never lost a single fish since. I can throw ich magnets like Powder Blue or Achilies tangs in my tank (after QT) and have never seen a single white spot in any of them. It would have been useful to add some coments on how to sterilize the tank and equipment after: bleach dose per litre, how long to let it circulate, how to properly dry the equipment, etc

Curious, what do you medicate with? I would like to prophylactically medicate as well…

Great video - I'll chime in: when I water change my QT, I use waste water from my display tank water changes. This way I am not using any more salt mix than I would use without the QT. Just need to be extra careful with cross contamination.

I killed every fish I ever tried to QT... I gave up, just plop them in now, haven't had a problem since or before I tried QTing... I know I'm playing Russian roulette, but it's better than just systematically killing every fish I come across

I’ve killed every fish also! The ones that have just been dropped in have survived just fine but I just lost three more in QT and I’m getting pretty discouraged with it

When setting up a QT/observation take, is it good to use the water from the display tank to fill the QT tank, or should it be fresh made salt water. Then if you decide to keep your QT tank up and running, would it be best practice to due a weekly water change with display water or again, use fresh made salt water.
    Thanks

Always use fresh made saltwater using a basic salt mix without the fancy additives such as amino acids, etc...

If you leave a QT tank running unoccupied for a long time, do you need to feed to keep the bacterial population alive?

Toss a little food In there once a month or so. And keep some small bio media in your display sump or filter area you can toss in the QT HOB during qt. Don't sweat it too much you can easily control ammonia with water changes in qt along with a little pre-seeded bio media.
