Chippy the Freeway Kitten Rescue

Last Friday, this incredible California Highway Patrol Officer Ryan Moore stopped traffic on Highway 1 in Monterey to help a tiny kitten who was running in the middle of the lanes.
Officer Moore knew the kitten would run and he didn’t want to endanger her or passing motorists, so he stopped traffic briefly on the highway to save her.
Officer Moore attempted to catch the kitten again, but she jumped into the Prius’ wheel well and crawled up to the fuel tank.
“My hand was just a foot away from grabbing her, then she ran up and behind the Prius engine,” says Officer Moore. With the scared kitten hidden out of sight and reach, Officer Moore called us for help.
SPCA Humane Investigations Supervisor Jacob Duarte arrived on scene to help the kitten. Jacob could hear but not see or reach the kitten, but he ensured she was in a place where she would not get hurt with the engine on. For the safety of the kitten and highway drivers, Tom slowly and carefully moved the vehicle to his nearby work parking lot with CHP following him with emergency lights on to keep everyone safe.
Once in the parking lot, Jacob could hear the kitten more clearly without highway traffic nearby. Using a camera on a wire to locate her, and after removing a few car parts, Jacob scooped the kitten up and brought her to safety. The rescue delay made Tom over two hours late for work, but saving the kitten was worth it all.
“At first I had a moment of ‘why did this cat pick my car of all cars’,” says Tom. “But it was a really heartwarming reinforcement of the good in society. The CHP officers were so great, Jacob was amazing, and together we made a difference and saved this little kitten.”
“I couldn't just leave this little kitten out on the highway,” says Officer Moore. “I needed to try to do everything I could to help her. I’m so glad that Jacob was able to get her out.”
Jacob and the kitten, who we’ve named Chippy to honor the CHP officers who helped her, returned to the SPCA where Chippy had a drink of cool water, some healthy food, and a thorough vet exam. She was just adopted by Officer Moore and his wonderful family.
