As a fledgling drummer I think a worthy aspiration is Richard's ultra fluid wrist pump ride playing. So mesmerizing to watch pure technique control like this.
It's called the moeller technique or simply push pull. You could learn it yourself with a little practice. It's a very natural motion once you feel it working. Can greatly improve speed and endurance.
Sadly, I hadn't heard of Richard until I started following Meinl's channel a few years back. Now I'm obsessed! So tasteful and creative. Amazing composition and execution. Thank you Meinl for showcasing so many different genres through your videos! Production is outstanding per the usual!
This song has some strange bird/cat chirps that were driving me crazy thinking they were outside my window. Love his playing and the song, but I wanted to share
He's a jazz drummer, but he's influenced by break beat and jungle sounds from the 90s. For jazz drumming try Nate Smith or Yussef Dawes. For 90s jungle or break beat I'd start with Roni Size - Brown Paper Bag or Goldie.
This man is a wizard! Incredible, tasteful drumming...
Perfect, graceful playing, just the right notes, holding back from your toolbox for the sake of the song. I love that ride transition at 2:56!

There’s a major difference in how everyone else hits a hi-hat and how spaven hits a hi-hat. It ain’t the same

I wanna know what you have in your mind when you play? The structure of this groove is out of this world !!!
Where the heck is the ONE beat? So much anxiety, but yet so mesmerizing.
Lols maybe you won’t get so anxious if you forget about trying to find the One and enjoy the openness and freedom of the groove.
what´s the electronic device he´s using right next to him? a sort of mixer or metronome?
Looks like a Behringer personal monitor mixer for the track in his in-ears.
Where can I find more just like this ? What’s the name of this kind of music?

The guitarist is Stuart McCallum he has an album called distilled which has some similar sounds. Different drummer though.
